Ridgewood NJ, Baristas affiliated with Starbucks Workers United, are planning their most significant strike to date this week, alleging the company’s refusal to engage in fair negotiations at cafes that have voted to unionize.

Thousands of employees at numerous locations will stage one-day work stoppages on Thursday, coinciding with the company’s Red Cup Day on November 16th, a popular promotional event featuring holiday-themed reusable cups. The unionized baristas have expressed their intent to walk off the job in protest against what they perceive as the company’s lack of willingness to engage in good-faith negotiations for labor contracts in unionized stores.

Starbucks, in response, contends that the union has not negotiated fairly. The strike is anticipated to impact approximately 2% of all Starbucks stores in the U.S. In a recent announcement, Starbucks Corporation revealed plans to increase hourly pay for its U.S. retail workers by at least 3% from 2024, including differentiated pay for eligible tenured partners, with a 5% boost for those with at least five years of service. Other employee-focused initiatives were also unveiled, such as earlier accrual of paid vacation time, financial well-being and skills-building benefits, partner-centric scheduling, and the inaugural North America Barista Championship.
