Could a government shutdown doom the White House Easter Egg Roll?
Posted by Juliet Eilperin on March 18, 2013 at 4:39 pm

For more than a century, the White House Easter Egg Roll has been insulated from the sort of partisan sniping that now dominates Washington politics.

That tradition ended Monday, when Republicans started complaining about a notice that the event could be canceled due to a potential government shutdown. The Obama administration has already come under GOP criticism for canceling White House tours due to the mandatory, across-the-board cuts known as sequestration.

The memo — which doesn’t actually say the White House is nixing the bunny fest, but just that it might do so at some point during the next couple of weeks — warns ticket-holders that the nation’s financial woes may affect the 135th Easter Egg role slated for April 1. (Note: this is not an April’s Fools Day joke.)

Sen. Bob Menendez’s troubles far from over as he awaits findings of ethics, criminal probes

Growing evidence that prostitutes were paid to lie about trysts with Sen. Bob Menendez will have little impact on other investigations into the senator reportedly under way, ethics experts say.

And the most severe penalties he could face – expulsion from the Senate or a possible prison sentence — come with the highest burden of proof and therefore a lower likelihood of happening based on information what has been made public so far, lawyers and ethics experts say.

Menendez is seeking to have the unknown enemies punished for concocting reports of trysts with Dominican prostitutes.

But he has admitted he accepted free flights to the Dominican Republic on top donor Salomon Melgen’s private plane and waited two years to pay Melgen back. Now both the Senate Ethics Committee and the Justice Department could weigh in on the legality of that delay and for not disclosing a gift from one of the senator’s largest donors.

Ridgewood to pay firefighter’s legal bills

RIDGEWOOD — The Village Council has agreed to reimburse a fire captain’s legal bills from his successful overturning of a decision not to promote him.

The village will pay nearly $5,000 in legal fees incurred by Capt. John Albano, a member of the paid fire squad for nearly three decades.

Last August, the New Jersey Civil Service Commission ruled that Village Manager Ken Gabbert tried to circumvent the rules that govern military veterans’ preference, when he improperly denied a promotion to Albano, then a lieutenant, a year earlier.

The council last week voted 3-1 to reimburse Albano $4,853in legal fees. Councilman Thomas Riche stormed out of the council chambers just before the vote.

Albano was one of three people that Fire Chief James Van Goor presented for two captain positions in the department. Christopher DuFloucq, Albano and Robert Kozielski were listed in that order, according to the ruling.

If they want to keep their “sushi monster” happy, children need to know their math facts.
Ridgewood High School students in French 5 Advanced Placement work on their laptops and iPads.

“Sushi Monster,” a free iPad game produced by Scholastic, is just one of several games that Willard School teachers are using in their classrooms as part of the school’s initiative to integrate technology into the classroom in a fun way.

This year, the district has taken a heightened interest in improving its professional technology savvy and integrating technology into all curricular areas. The success of iPad usage at Willard and other schools is giving the district extra impetus to keep forging forward with a variety of technology goals planned for the future.

Ridgewood may increase fees for private police assignments

A revenue-generating proposal from the Ridgewood Police Department’s top brass and the village manager’s office likely will not solve all of the village’s financial challenges, but the initiative has already earned the preliminary support of governing officials.

The Village Council on Wednesday introduced an ordinance that, if approved on April 10, will increase the fees assessed to private companies and contractors for the use of police personnel.

Over the past two weeks, police officials and the village manager outlined plans to up the charges for special police duties, such as providing traffic detail for landscapers and utility companies doing work along Ridgewood streets. The proposed changes include an increase to a flat $20 fee for each administrative and maintenance purpose.

Readers Mock NJEA  Endorsement of Senator Barbara Bruno

What a shocker?

No, this can’t be true?

Union people, voting for the person who better supports their 4+% raises, premium healthcare, and pensions….

Why wouldn’t you support pay freezes, like the public sector gets, Paying more into your healthcare like the public sector does, and eliminating your pensions and start paying into 401Ks like the public sector does? GO, Christie, GO

Most States are being crippled by Unions now. People working in Union plans today will collect more in retirement than the years they actually spent working? Think about it? Maybe Obamacare will take a few more out earlier than expected? What a great plan, put Barack and his family on this? Put Congress on Obamacare?

The truth sometimes hurts

Anglers Unite : Trout Season Opens April 6th

Anglers Unite : Trout Season Opens April 6th

TROUT STOCKING HOTLINE: 609-633-6765

We know it hard to believe with snow on the ground but yes Trout Season officially open s in New Jersey on April 16th

The stocking trucks from the Pequest Trout Hatchery will begin rolling on March 18 as the spring pre-season distribution of this year’s trout gets under way. By year’s end, approximately 600,000 trout will be stocked throughout the state, but the action really got going on Opening Day, April 6, at 8 a.m.

The “production trout” average 10.5″ but were kept company prior to opening day by some of the more than 6,000 three to eight pound breeder trout which are also being stocked. This spring, trout will be placed in 88 streams and 90 ponds and lakes throughout New Jersey. Those trout will be in addition to some of the 26,000 bruisers still in the water from stockings in the fall and winter. Fortunately for the state’s anglers, trout remain available throughout the summer in many waters.

troutgirl10tpsm

HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2013

Trout fishing in New Jersey continues to be some of the best available on the East Coast. The average size of the trout stocked is larger than trout stocked in neighboring states, and the Bonus Broodstock Lakes and the breeder stocking programs provide plenty of trophy size fish within a short drive from anywhere in the state. Aside from some allocation changes, noted below, the 2013 season is expected to provide the normally superb trout fishing opportunities New Jersey anglers have grown to appreciate.

Driving directions to some of the state’s better know trout water access points can be found at www.njfishandwildlife.com/accesswater.htm. Anglers are reminded that access to locations along trout stocked streams may be available only through the good graces of private landowners. Please be respectful of their property and take care not to damage trees and shrubs. Leaving your fishing location cleaner than when you arrived helps maintain good angler-landowner relations and ensures continued public access to trout streams.

The in-season stocking schedule, covering the seven weeks following opening day, is available online at www.njfishandwildlife.com/trtstk13.htm and through the trout stocking hotline at 609-633-6765.

SPRING TROUT SEASON BASICS

Anglers should be aware that most trout-stocked waters are closed to fishing during the 3 weeks leading up to opening day (March 18 – April 6 at 8 a.m.). During this time most trout-stocked waters are stocked with trout to provide anglers with great fishing opportunities on Opening Day, April 6.Successful trout angler

During this pre-season period you might want to try fishing one of a handful of trout-stocked waters that remain open for fishing. Farrington Lake (Middlesex Co.), Lake Hopatcong (Morris/Sussex counties), Lake Shenandoah (Ocean Co.), Prospertown Lake (Ocean Co.), and Swartswood Lake (Sussex Co.) are open year round to fishing. Designated Trout Conservation Areas (Seasonal and Year Round) and Holdover Trout Lakes also remain open to fishing. (Note that fishing is not permitted on Seasonal Trout Conservation Areas from 12:01 a.m. to 8 a.m. on April 6, 2013). Trout caught in any of these waters during the pre-season period must be released immediately.

Those looking to fish during the pre-season period and keep their catch can cast a line in either of the state’s two Trophy Trout Lakes, Merrill Creek and Round Valley Reservoirs.

Be sure to check the trout regulations (https://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/2013/trtregs13.pdf)  pertaining to all the above waters.

On Opening Day and the days that follow, there are a few regulations to keep in mind. On most waters anglers may keep 6 trout per day, and the trout must be at least 9 inches long. Since the trout reared at the Pequest Trout Hatchery average 10½ inches when stocked, most of the stocked trout you catch can be harvested if you chose to. June 1 is an important date, as the daily creel limit for trout on most trout waters drops from 6 to 4 per day.

The state’s sixteen major trout streams are stocked every week after Opening Day for the next seven weeks and they are closed to fishing from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the day of stocking. This allows the trout a chance to disperse following stocking and gives anglers an equal opportunity to fish for freshly stocked trout. All other waters may be fished at any time following Opening Day, including the day they are stocked. Many are stocked at least three times after Opening Day so be sure to check the trout stocking schedule to determine the stocking dates for the waters you plan to fish. Since every county has waters that are stocked with trout, spring trout fishing opportunities are never too far away

Almost One-Third of State Sheriffs’ Organizations Now Oppose Obama Gun Control

According to a recent Washington Examiner article, a total of 14 sheriffs’ associations now oppose President Obama’s proposed gun control measures.

The article notes that sheriffs’ associations in South Carolina, California and, most recently, Nevada, have joined thegrowing group of other state associations in demanding that Obama stop going after law-abiding gun owners and instead focus on improving the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

“We have all seen what persons who have mental illness, who are users of illegal controlled substances, or are members of criminal gangs can do with weapons in their hands; any weapons, not just firearms.  As it currently stands, many of these individuals are not entered into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System for a whole variety of reasons.  This must be addressed at the national, state and local levels,” said the Nevada sheriffs.

“The sheriffs of the state of Nevada do not believe that the answer to this issue includes making criminals out of otherwise law-abiding individuals. As the old saying goes, ‘As guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.’ The answer lies within a myriad of approaches including education, addressing violence, keeping firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill, criminal gang members, and illegal controlled substance users, as well as prosecuting and incarcerating those who would use firearms to commit crimes.”

Reader says Valley has one of the lowest charity care rates of all NJ hospitals

Valley has one of the lowest charity care rates of all NJ hospitals, that has been the case for a long time.

Some numbers at this link: https://www.nj.gov/health/charitycare/documents/sfy2012ccs.pdf

The numbers show how much charity care reimbursement each NJ hospital received.

Compare Valley there to others, even smaller hospitals such as Holy Name (361 beds) and Chilton(260 beds). You can also look at other years online and will find Valley provides among the least charity care of any NJ hospital.

You can also view numbers there for charity care at HUMC, also for Bergen Regional Med Center in Paramus and others.
