Did ISIS fervor seize N.J. brothers?

On April 21, Nader Saadeh’s distraught mother begged her 20-year-old son, who was an ocean away, not to join the militant Islamic State.

“Do not go anywhere if u love me dont kill your mom,” Nadira Saif wrote in an email in Arabic translated by the FBI. “Dont kill my smile[.] i want be happy all the time do not leave me do not go to them!”

The email is included in one of five criminal complaints that form a detailed, emotional narrative, in which federal authorities allege that the Fort Lee High School graduate, his older brother Alaa and three acquaintances slid into an obsession with the Islamic State, its theology and its violence.

Detained for months in Jordan and arraigned in federal court in Newark last Monday, Nader Saadeh is portrayed by the FBI as a key figure in a plot that allegedly involved bomb-making attempts and aspirations to join and fight with Sunni Muslim militants of the Islamic State, or ISIS.

According to the FBI and a family friend who informed on him, Nader Saadeh was making plans to join the Islamic State, looking up plane flights and viewing Islamic State propaganda online. The case against him is based on testimony of three unidentified informers as well as video, audio and digital surveillance, and statements made by his brother, Alaa.

The brothers’ father, Khaled Saadeh, denies that his sons had any involvement with ISIS. If they had, he said, he would have turned them in himself.

Reminder: Ridgewood Water Stage II limits the use of water for irrigation to two days per week

Ridgewood Water – Stage II Restrictions

Dear Ridgewood Water Customers:

The hot weather and limited rainfall has led to a big increase in water use for irrigating. At the same time, the rainfall and groundwater status as monitored by NJDEP has recently been downgraded from “near normal” to “moderately dry.” Stage I restrictions have not moderated the water demand enough to maintain reserves for firefighting and other emergencies, so Ridgewood Water is implementing Stage II restrictions. Stage II limits the use of water for irrigation to two days per week. If your street address is an odd number, you may irrigate on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. If your street address is an even number, you may irrigate on Wednesdays and Sundays only. A hand held hose may be used at any time. No irrigation is allowed on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays except for a hand held hose.

PSE&G offers simple ways you can stay cool and safe as temperatures and humidity rise during the season’s third official heat wave.

We are also monitoring weather conditions and have additional personnel on hand to handle any power interruptions. Our call centers also have extra personnel on duty to speak with customers and our appliance service technicians stand ready to quickly respond to an influx of air conditioning repair calls.

Here are some easy steps you can take to stay cool, safe and save energy:

• Use a programmable thermostat to set air conditioners to daily and weekend schedules. Consider setting air conditioners to 78 degrees.

• Close blinds and shades facing the sun to keep the sun’s heat out and helpfans and air conditioners cool more efficiently.

• Use ceiling fans set in the counter-clockwise position to feel cooler when in a room.

• Close doors leading to uncooled areas. With central air, close off vents to unused rooms.

• Turn off everything you’re not using: lights, computers, etc. Use dimmers, timers and motion detectors on indoor and outdoor lighting.

• If you should lose power, NEVER use a portable generator inside your home or in close proximity to a home, business or enclosed space. Proper ventilation is required. Improperly used generators can produce deadly carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, tasteless gas that can cause headache, dizziness, nausea and other symptoms.

PJM, the regional grid operator, expects to have sufficient power supplies available to meet the increased demand for electricity. PSE&G expects today’s electric demand to reach 8,905 megawatts, with demand increasing tomorrow as temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-90s.

When 24m US viewers tuned in to watch Donald Trump slug it out with his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, Fox News made television history, recording record ratings for a non-sports cable broadcast.

However, those who followed the political jousting on social networks had a common complaint: despite partnering with Facebook to host the debate, Fox News had made it virtually impossible to watch the event online.

Twitter users traded links with illicit livestreams and lambasted the network’s failure to cater for “cord-cutters” or “cord-nevers” — people who have either ditched their pay-TV subscription or have never signed up for one.

The disconnect between the knockout ratings and the incredulity of young, media-savvy viewers appeared to support the central thesis of broadcasters and pay-TV providers: cord-cutting might be fashionable for trendy elites, but it has yet to make a dent in “real” America’s love affair with television.

AT&T Helped N.S.A. Spy on an Array of Internet Traffic

The National Security Agency’s ability to spy on vast quantities of Internet traffic passing through the United States has relied on its extraordinary, decades-long partnership with a single company: the telecom giant AT&T.

While it has been long known that American telecommunications companies worked closely with the spy agency, newly disclosed N.S.A. documents show that the relationship with AT&T has been considered unique and especially productive. One document described it as “highly collaborative,” while another lauded the company’s “extreme willingness to help.”

AT&T’s cooperation has involved a broad range of classified activities, according to the documents, which date from 2003 to 2013. AT&T has given the N.S.A. access, through several methods covered under different legal rules, to billions of emails as they have flowed across its domestic networks. It provided technical assistance in carrying out a secret court order permitting the wiretapping of all Internet communications at the United Nations headquarters, a customer of AT&T.

Tony Napier, the Father of Ridgewood Gymnastics Passed Away

Today my dad, Tony Napier, went Home to be with the Lord. He was the Father of Ridgewood gymnastics, bringing his expertise of the sport to
the schools in 1962. He was a gymnast for almost all of his 78 years,a PE teacher for 29 years, a coach for more than 30 years, and a judge
for 59 years. He touched many many lives in the Ridgewood school system. Arrangements are Mon, Aug. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Spearing
Funeral Home in Park Ridge and Tues, Aug 18 at 10:30 at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Wash Twp for the church service. Bernadette Napier Orso

Today is a very very sad day for me and for many others. I lost my High School Gymnastics coach Tony Napier yesterday. I dont know what prompted me to call him yesterday but I did. I didn’t get that last chance to talk with him as he had passed.I remember all the great times with my coach and mentor.He has a beautiful family that I also love. He taught me persistence,dedication, and instilled in me my hard work ethic. He was a marvelous motivator and loved our great sport of gymnastics.I will miss him every day . God Bless you coach and your wonderful family . Heaven will be even a better place now that your there! Geoff Stoner

Sharpton calls for black churches to lobby on Iran deal

Rev. Al Sharpton will push America’s black churches to lobby in favor of the Iran nuclear deal, a new report says.

Sharpton is launching his push backing President Obama’s pact with Tehran this weekend, according to The Huffington Post.

“I am calling on ministers in black churches nationwide to go to their pulpits Sunday and have their parishioners call their senators and congressmen to vote yes on the Iran nuclear plan,” he said Friday.

“We have a disproportionate interest, being that if there is a war, our community is always disproportionately part of the armed services, and that a lot of the debate is by people who will not have family members who will be at risk,” Sharpton added.

He also argued Friday that his efforts would counter a coordinated national effort against Obama’s historic diplomatic achievement.

“There needs to be a balance in this,” he said. “Clearly lobbyists and others like AIPAC are pushing on their side, and there needs to be an organized effort on the other side.”

Carson Doubles Down: Abortions Are the Number One Cause of Death For Black People

Dr. Ben Carson spoke with Eric Bolling on The O’Reilly Factor about his recent controversial statements about how Planned Parenthood clinics are strategically placed in order to control the African American population. Carson began the discussion by reiterating his position that Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger was a eugenist who was “was not enamored of black people.”

As Bolling asked him about abortion rates in black communities, Carson responded by saying it was a matter of deciding whether those black lives matter as much.

“The number one cause of death for black people is abortion, and I wonder if maybe some people might at some point become concerned about that and ask, why is that happening,” Carson said. He went on to continue his point about Sanger’s alleged eugenics leanings, saying that if Parenthood employees learned about her, they’d be less keen to defend their practices:

Wheaties to create the ultimate breakfast beer

These Wheaties may not be so good with milk.

Wheaties says it is partnering with a craft brewery to create a limited-edition beer. The 16-ounce cans will only be available in the Minneapolis-St. Paul market starting Aug. 26, according to Wheaties parent company General Mills.

It’s not exactly clear what makes it Wheaties beer, besides being made from wheat.

General Mills says the beer will be called HefeWheaties in a nod to a German style of beer called hefeweizen, which is typically made with more than 50 percent malted wheat.

“We’re not saying it’s a breakfast beer, but we’re not saying it’s not,” said Ryan Petz, president of Fulton Brewery, the Minneapolis-based brewery that is making the beer.

Petz said the beer is also intended to tie his company to heritage of Minneapolis, which is also home to General Mills’ headquarters. Fulton will consider making the beer more widely available depending on how people react to the initial run, he said.

Supreme Court’s Gay-Marriage Ruling Allows Something Else: Gay Divorce

ATLANTA—June’s Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage is sending some couples to court for a very different reason: same-sex divorce.

Marie Griffin, who lives in Savannah, Ga., moved out of the home she shared with her wife in late May. But the couple, who married in 2014 in Washington, D.C., couldn’t legally end their marriage, because Georgia didn’t permit either same-sex marriage or divorce.

On the day of the June 26 Supreme Court ruling that all states must recognize same-sex marriages, she said that she recalled thinking, “We have to, and we can, get a divorce now.” She contacted a lawyer and is pursuing a divorce.

Her wife, Sandy Rogers, didn’t return requests for comment. Ms. Rogers’ attorney, Martin G. Hilliard, said his client and Ms. Griffin were in a “legal hinterland” when they separated before the ruling. The ability to divorce lifts a “huge burden.”

Couples in states like Georgia are lining up both to wed and divorce in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling, according to attorneys, some of whom are reaching out to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities for business.

Dying woman sues her New Jersey doctors for using a hysterectomy device that the FDA says can spread cancer

A 43-year-old New Jersey mother is lying on her death bed, her body racked with cancer a year after she underwent a hysterectomy, and she’s blaming her doctor for using a controversial device in the procedure.

Viviana Ruscitto is suing her oncologist, Dr. Howard Jones, for malpractice, alleging he used a device that she blames for spreading cancer cells in her uterus throughout her internal organs.

“My sister’s prognosis is poor, and I do not know how much longer she can continue fighting this cancer,” Mirian Riviera told a judge last week in a sworn statement.

Ruscitto had a minimally invasive hysterectomy performed in October 2014 to remove a large fibroid in her uterus at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J.,The Record reported.

Jones used a controversial surgical tool, a power morcellator, to cut and tear tissue so it could be removed from her body.

The device was approved to remove uterine fibroids in 1991 because the small incisions from morcellation helped patients recover quicker and easier.

The device has come under heavy scrutiny in recent years, however, and in April 2014 the FDA released a safety alert against morcellators, acknowledging that the device can spread undetected cancer cells.

The agency said some of the minced undetected cancerous tissue fragments could be left behind in the abdominal cavity and spread to other parts of the body.

The government discouraged doctors from using the morcellators and encouraged professionals to discuss the risks and benefits with their patients.

The device’s largest manufacturer, Ethicon, a division of Johnson & Johnson, promptly pulled the morcellator off the market.

The district has put out a call for additional substitute teachers, nurses and secretaries for the 2015-2016 school year. Substitutes enjoy the freedom of selecting their dates of work according to their personal schedules through a self-scheduling online system. Pay rates for the 2015-2016 school year are as follows: teachers $92 to $125 per diem; nurses $130 per diem; secretaries $12.50 to $17 per hour.
