New Jersey governor Chris Christie has failed to hold an open-ended press conference since November 12, mostly restricting his public presence to town hall meetings and prepackaged videos sent out by his media relations team, The Associated Press writer Jill Colvin reports.
“The access has just been minimal at best,” New Jersey Press Association executive director George White told The Associated Press.
Christie’s office responded that his numerous town hall meetings with constituents, as well as his monthly hour-long radio appearance on NJ 101.5 and interviews with individual reporters, prove that the governor is still accessible and answerable to the public. “The governor believes it’s just as important, if not more important, to communicate directly with his constituents as it is to communicate with the media,” Christie spokesperson Kevin Roberts told the AP.

Reporters in the national press are all in bed with their powerful government sources, and that is proven each year during White House Correspondents’ Dinner week. That’s the conclusion of a new documentary directed by a former reporter at one of Washington, D.C.’s biggest news publications.
Patrick Gavin, who most recently worked as a journalist for Politico until leaving in 2014, chronicles in his film the evolution of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner from a small annual gathering of journalists and West Wing officials in the 1920s to the multimillion dollar week-long power-jockeying event it has become today.
“Nerd Prom: Inside Washington’s Wildest Week” is an indictment of the incestuous culture fostered by the Capitol’s elite journalists and the government officials they’re supposed to be holding accountable. In Gavin’s view, this connection is encapsulated by the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Gavin says in the movie that he created it to find out what the annual event is truly about. By the end, he’s bemoaning the loss of the dinner’s meaning, which is produced by the White House Correspondents’ Association and was originally intended to celebrate press freedom, as well as serve as a scholarship award ceremony for aspiring journalists.

NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Imagine owning a cozy second home at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in scenic Estes Park, Colo. Elk saunter through your backyard and you enjoy fishing and snowshoeing in the crisp fall air. Exhausted and rejuvenated, you eventually pack up and head home, locking up your vacation villa for the winter.
But Estes Park autumns can be a bit on the brisk side. Some friends of Richard Jensen, a resident of nearby Fort Collins, found that out the hard way.
“Not realizing the drastic change in temperatures in the winter months, they forgot to leave the heat on when they left the house after using it September,” Jensen says. “Estes Park experienced freezing temperatures in October, and when family members went to check on the house they discovered a pipe had burst and the house was flooded with water. This resulted in an insurance claim that has exceeded $20,000 in repairs.”
Jensen, a real estate broker and vacation home owner himself, knows the reality of remote homeownership.
“It’s a good idea to be on good terms with your neighbors and ask them to keep an eye on the property for you,” he says. “Otherwise, hire a property management company that will check on your home while you’re not using it.”

Whenever a prominent political figure is indicted on charges of alleged corruption, serious questions arise. Is the prosecution part of a growing and dangerous trend toward criminalizing policy differences? Does it endanger the free speech rights of contributors? Will it constrain the legislative branch from serving as a check and balance on the executive?
These questions now are being raised in the context of the prosecution of New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, as they previously were in several other ill-advised prosecutions including those of former agriculture secretary Mike Espy, former presidential candidate John Edwards, the late Sen. Ted Stevens, former Congressman Tom Delay, and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
The reason these questions arise is not because there is no corruption in government. It is because the laws distinguishing between constitutionally protected political activities and illegal payments to office holders are vague and indeterminate. These laws give prosecutors enormous discretion to determine whether to prosecute questionable transactions. And the courts refuse to second guess prosecutorial decisions even in cases where selective prosecution based on improper considerations seems evident.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A black bear reportedly roaming around Ridgewood, New Jersey, was tranquilized by authorities Saturday.
According to posts on the Ridgewood Police Department’s social media accounts, the 175-pound bear was roaming the community earlier but was removed by the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Ridgewood police tell WCBS 880 a call came in at about 8:10 a.m. about a bear in the area heading into town.

Americans who were held hostage in Iran from 1979 to 1981 are pushing the Obama administration to demand that they be compensated as part of any nuclear deal.
Dozens of the hostages and their families will meet with lawmakers’ staffs early next week to reiterate their call for compensation from Iran, which has gone unanswered in the 35 years since they were held prisoner.
Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) has filed two amendments to Iran legislation that would “ensure that resolving the issue of compensation for hostages is considered” prior to any nuclear agreement, a source familiar with the amendments told The Hill.
Isakson proposed the amendments to legislation introduced by Sens. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) that would require congressional review of any deal the administration brokers with Tehran. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is expected to move forward with the legislation on Tuesday.
A State Department official noted that the administration has in the past backed Isakson’s bipartisan efforts on compensating the hostages, but suggested the issue would not be part of the nuclear talks.

Ridgewood Tennis readies itself for season on the road

RIDGEWOOD — Not even a week into the 2015 campaign, the Ridgewood High School boys tennis team has already faced a season’s worth of challenges.
The team has been forced to relocate all its home matches to its opponents’ courts until further notice after snow removal efforts damaged two of the high school’s five courts, rendering them unplayable.
Then, after winning the team’s opener on Monday versus Paramus, the Maroons’ match with Ramapo was postponed due to rain and foreboding skies threatened the rest of the week’s slate.
“It’s been that kind of season so far,” head coach Deirdre Tobin said with a laugh Tuesday.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of it. Just minutes after making that statement, Ridgewood’s best player and captain, Berfu Yildiz, sprained his ankle on a team run and was expected to sit out the rest of the week, according to Tobin.

A trip to the Cherry Valley Country Club in Montgomery on Tuesday allowed Ridgewood High School’s girls golf coach Brian Quirk a moment to think ahead.
“We’ve been on the cusp of qualifying for the state championship round and we hope to get there this year,” Quirk said once he arrived home Tuesday from the Montgomery Lady Cougar Invitational — also known as the Cherry Valley Invitational. “And since the state matches are played at Cherry Valley, it was nice to get in a round on that course.”
Familiarizing oneself with the field of battle is one thing, but now Quirk is working to align his troops for the surge that lies ahead.
The Maroons begin with their lone senior, Jessica Chang; sophomore Hyoyi Joo and junior Kiley Chmiel, all of whom stood out in the shoot-four, count-three event.
“When we count four [golfers in the scoring process], Diana Soriano, another junior, is probably the one,” he said. “She’s in the same boat as the first three. We’re looking for Diana to start to contribute regularly.”
