Hawthorne NJ, A black bear likely to have been the same one seen early Monday morning, 06/12, roaming around outside of the Jefferson Middle School in Hawthorne, was spotted perched (and eating) in a tree of a Goffle Hill Road, Hawthorne home late Monday afternoon, 06/12. Hawthorne PD units along with a representative of Tyco Animal Control Services responded to assess the situation. It was determined that the bear presented no immediate danger to residents of the home, who were asked to stay inside in the hopes that the animal would come down from the tree and wander off if it did not feel threatened by the presence of a human.

Black Bear Spotted on Grove Street in Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police are reporting that a Black Bear was spotted eating garbage from the garbage can of a Grove Street residence along the PSE&G right of way on the Glen Rock border at 3:30pm. The bear then disappeared into the wooded area that backs up to the Ridgewood sewage treatment plant.

Black bears by nature tend to be wary of people. However, if you encounter a black bear in your neighborhood or outdoors while hiking or camping, follow these common-sense safety tips.

Do not feed bears! Never feed or approach a bear!

Remain calm if you encounter a bear. Do not run from it.

Make the bear aware of your presence by speaking in an assertive voice, singing, clapping your hands, or making other noises.

Make sure the bear has an escape route.

If a bear enters your home, provide it with an escape route by propping all doors open.

Avoid direct eye contact, which may be perceived by a bear as a challenge. Never run from a bear. Instead, slowly back away.

To scare the bear away, make loud noises by yelling, banging pots and pans or using an airhorn. Make yourself look as big as possible by waving your arms. If you are with someone else, stand close together with your arms raised above your head.

The bear may utter a series of huffs, make popping jaw sounds by snapping its jaws and swat the ground. These are warning signs that you are too close. Slowly back away, avoid direct eye contact and do not run.

If a bear stands on its hind legs or moves closer, it may be trying to get a better view or detect scents in the air. It is usually not a threatening behavior.

Black bears will sometimes “bluff charge” when cornered, threatened or attempting to steal food. Stand your ground, avoid direct eye contact, then slowly back away and do not run.

If the bear does not leave, move to a secure area.

Black bear attacks are extremely rare. If a black bear does attack, fight back!

If you observe the bear please call the Ridgewood Police 201-652-3900.

An official of Rutgers University, where the man killed by a West Milford bear attack on Sunday was a student, issued a statement this afternoon on Darsh Patel’s “tragic passing.”

Richard L. Edwards, chancellor at Rutgers-New Brunswick, wrote in a statement: “As we grieve over his tragic passing, please know that our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones and to all his friends and fellow students at Rutgers.”

He said the university has made counselors available to members of the Rutgers community.

Patel, 22, of Edison, was identified as the man killed by the black bear Sunday afternoon in the Apshawa Preserve in West Milford.

A bear was found at the preserve and immediately euthanized, West Milford police said in a news release.

Patel and four friends, all from Edison, were hiking in the preserve when they encountered a black bear that began to follow them, the release said. They ran in different directions and called police when they couldn’t find Patel.
