The two-day event, held September 22-23, gave select agents from the Christie’s International Real Estate network an opportunity to explore best practices and strategies, as well as gain competitive insights on ways to successfully maneuver in today’s ever-changing, high-end global property market. Upon completion, attendees received the designation of Christie’s International Real Estate Luxury Specialist from Christie’s Education. Reader says No More Kicking the Can down the Road for the Ridgewood School Board

Will the kicking of the can continue with the Teachers contract??? Now is the time to stop this nonsense!!

Let’s hope we can at least put a dent in the can! One would think the REA has gotten the message by now. It would appear that most of Ridgewood (excluding the teachers who actually live in town) oppose their union’s demands. Why are we paying our teachers more than surrounding towns with better or comparable ratings? There goes your real estate values. Wyckoff, Allendale, HoHoKus, Franklin Lakes, Upper Saddle River are all lovely towns with lower taxes. I just can’t get that photo of those teachers’ and their mean, arrogant and angry faces out of my mind. The blonde and one next to her wearing sunglasses look particularly nasty! If they knew who my child was I’m sure there would be ramifications in the classroom for this comment!

FAQ: Shifting to a Full-Day Kindergarten Program in Ridgewood

● Why is the District considering a full-day program after years of a successful half-day program?

○ The definition of success has shifted with the times, and although Ridgewood has a high-quality Kindergarten program, it is rushed and lacks adequate time for structured socialization and free play. Students who encounter more structured play around learning will better internalize that learning because at this age, play is how children learn. Additionally, social skills such as executive functioning and self-regulation of behavior are learned through play, often which is unstructured. A half-day program does not allow time for these essential learning opportunities for our students.

● How will the curriculum of a full-day program differ from that of the half-day program?

○ A full-time program will include more time for learning centers, which are essentially structured play experiences designed to reinforce conceptual learning. Additionally, more time will be dedicated to free-play centers, in which students make up rules to self-created games and make-believe. This free-play socialization will be supervised by, not structured by, adults. Another change to the day is that students will remain in school for lunch and will have snack and extended time for key content such as shared reading and writing.

● What would be the daily schedule and hours of a full-day program?

○ Kindergarten will run on the same schedule as the other grades in the school (8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.). A daily schedule for the full-day program was shared with the Board of Education and the public at the June 28, 2016 Board meeting. That presentation can be found in the Board of Education Presentations folder on the Curriculum page of the district website at www.ridgewood.k12.nj.us.

● How many other districts still have half-day Kindergarten programs?

○ Ridgewood is the only half-day program left in Bergen County. There are very few districts left in the state with a half-day program. The most common Kindergarten programs offer five full-days of school.  Those districts which were half-day have mostly moved to full-day programs in the last five years.  In 2014, 73% of programs statewide were full-day. The percentage was even higher in Bergen County, where 65 out of 72 districts (about 90%) offered full day programs. Since 2014, Glen Rock, Fairlawn, Rutherford, Mahwah, Waldwick and Midland Park have moved to fullday Kindergarten.  The Ramsey Kindergarten program consists of an optional, fee-based enrichment extended-day program, which the vast majority of children attend. Allendale, Franklin Lakes and Wyckoff have programs consisting of two halfdays / three full days, a model that is not very popular and the implementation cost is equal to that of a traditional full-day program.

● Would parents be required to enroll their children for the entire day if Ridgewood moved to full-day Kindergarten?

○ Yes, if the Ridgewood Public School district shifts to a full-day Kindergarten program, all enrolled students will be registered for five full days each week.

● Where will Kindergarten children eat lunch?

○ This will be a building-by-building decision, based on space and what the principal deems best for the program in their building.

● Will Kindergarten students have recess with all other students and how will their recess be supervised? ○ Kindergarten students would have more than one “recess” play time in their schedule. The schedule, location, and supervision of that recess would depend on individual building schedules. However, in all buildings the recess/lunch period of 45 minutes would be extended to one hour for Kindergarten students. Classroom teachers would supervise the additional 15 minutes at the end of recess to settle students down and prepare them for afternoon learning sessions.

● What are the anticipated class sizes for a full-day program? ○ Kindergarten class sizes would follow the Ridgewood Board of Education guidelines of 18 to 22 children per classroom.

● Can the district facilities / physical spaces accommodate full-day Kindergarten?

○ In November 2015 demographic consultant Ross Haber presented to the Board of Education the results of an enrollment and facility utilization study in which all of the Ridgewood elementary principals participated by discussing their buildings and classroom space. The report shows that over the last three years the district has seen a decrease in enrollment and indicates that our elementary schools can accommodate full-day Kindergarten. The demographer’s report is available for reading in the Fullday Kindergarten Exploratory Committee folder on the Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment page of the district website at www.ridgewood.k12.nj.us.

● How will the decision be made to move to full-day Kindergarten in Ridgewood?

○ On General Election Day, Tuesday, November 8, Ridgewood voters will be asked to approve full-day Kindergarten in the District. This vote will be done in the form of a “second question” on the ballot. All residents who are registered voters may participate. Voter registration forms may be found at on the Bergen County website at https://www.co.bergen.nj.us/DocumentCenter/View/1224.

● What is the purpose of a second question on a ballot?

○ A second question can only be placed on the ballot when a school district is asking for something new, such as full-day Kindergarten or a new program. Since the costs of these additional services and associated personnel can exceed the state-imposed two percent cap on budget increases, the public must vote on them.

● What would be the tax impact on a “yes” vote for the second question on full-day Kindergarten?

○ If full-day Kindergarten is passed by the voters, the average Village assessed home of $693,904 would have taxes increased by approximately $111.

● Is there any possibility that the State will require districts to provide full-day Kindergarten?

○ This is not known at this time.

Reader says I wouldn’t like to see Ridgewood Water absorbed into a large, private water company

Ridgewood water is not funded by taxes, it’s funded entirely by ratepayers (the water bill). It’s unfortunate but water is getting more expensive — more stringent water quality standards mean more treatment, which drives rates up. Also, in general, east coast water utilities are having to replace a lot of aging infrastructure which is nearing the end of its lifespan.

Ridgewood’s problem is that there is not enough storage for the comparatively high demands of summertime, when lots of people use automatic sprinklers to water their lawns every night. It’s a somewhat wasteful use of water, especially in the face of the droughts we tend to have in North Jersey, and I don’t mind dealing with some water restrictions to rein that in.

I remember that some years ago, Ridgewood did try to increase the capacity of one of its tanks ever so slightly (up on Valley View near Crest Rd) but the neighbors would have none of it.

United Water has had these same demand issues in places like Franklin Lakes where the water use has been a lot higher in the summer than in the winter because of lawn watering, pools, etc. They did take action and construct a large new storage tank on Shadow Ridge Rd, but they will turn around and use this large expense as a justification to raise water rates (Utilities both public and private are bound to justify their water rates). So not only will Franklin Lakes be consuming more water, they will pay more per gallon ($$$).

I agree that Ridgewood Water may not be as professional or “on top of things” as a larger organization. However, I wouldn’t like to see Ridgewood Water absorbed into a large, private water company. We would lose our nice-tasting well water (my opinion), control over our water rates, and the other benefits of having a small, local, public water utility

I am sure the allure of the power of the Democratic Party in Bergen County is difficult to resist. I am sure Chairman Stellato made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. But there are those of us who believe in fighting for what is right and what we believe in regardless of the outcome.

Sheriff Saudino may want us to believe that his decision is about law enforcement, but we know it’s not. It’s about making a deal to secure his re-election. So let’s not for a moment pretend that this defection today has anything to do with differences with the past administration or the sheriff’s ability to carry out his duties.

It’s about nothing more than political ambition and succumbing to the allure of power and prolonging a political career.

I am prepared to work this year with the citizens of this county who want fair, honest and open government and I look forward to working with the Republican Party’s nominee for sheriff.”

Fall Ridgewood Recreation Programs and Classes

FALL SESSION II PROGRAMS WITH RIDGEWOOD RECREATION – SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

Registration is underway for Fall Session II programs to begin in November.

Preschool

My First Art with Abrakadoodle – caregivers join as little ones enjoy “firsts” – touching, feeling, hearing, seeing, and thinking while painting, drawing, sculpting, enjoying storybooks, art games and music. Ages 20-42 months. Tuesday mornings at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. $110/6 classes, includes all materials.

Mini Doodler with Abrakadoodle – a fun journey with new lessons that inspire creativity to help little ones foster a love of art. Ages 3-5. Wednesday afternoons at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. $110/6 classes, includes all materials.

Elementary

Garden Arts for Kids – a magical mixture of nature and eco-art with lessons on animals, gardening and recycling. Ages 4-7. Monday afternoons at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. $110/6 classes, all materials provided.

Creative Cooking Holiday Fun with Education Explorers – Junior chefs learn the basics of cooking in this resourceful class; how to follow a recipe, mix, measure, and decorate with a variety of techniques and tools. Grades K-4. Mondays after school at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. $120/6 classes, includes all materials.

Drawing and/or Acrylics with Mrs. C – both offer art instruction to meet personal goals and approaches at individual levels. Grades 2-6. Acrylics is offered on Tuesdays after school and Drawing on Wednesdays after school. Both are located at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. Acrylics – $65/6 classes, Drawing – $55/5 classes. Students are to bring materials.

Super Science Mash Up #2 with Explore Science – Enjoy challenges in ALL realms of science with hands-on experiments and creations. Experiments include making your own lava lamp, working with color chemistry, making an ultimate puff mobile, making playdough, designing basic electrical circuitry and designing a bubble hat to take home. Grades K-5. Tuesdays after school at the Stable. $120/6 classes, includes all materials.

The Age of Dinosaurs with Education Explorers – Children will learn what it was like when dinosaurs owned the earth, 200 to 144 million years ago. Exciting and fun hands-on projects each week. Grades K-4. Wednesdays after school at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. $105/5 classes, includes all materials.

Crayola-la Model Magic Mania with Abrakadoodle – Participants will enjoy this art lover’s dream exploring all the wonderful products Crayola has to offer to make fabulous mixed media. Clay rules for sculpting while incorporating watercolor paints, tempera paints, oil pastels and more. Grades K-3. Thursdays after school at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. $100/5 classes, includes all materials.

Green Kids Spring Workshops **Starts October 14th** – for those who wish to explore and discover nature, gardening, science, art, birding, ecology, the environment and our senses. Grades 3-5. Wednesdays after school at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. Topics include Nature Sculptures, Homes for Feathered Friends, Homemade Troughs, Giving Thanks (community service project), and a trip to Lorrimer Sanctuary, Franklin Lakes. $50/5 workshops, all materials included. Sponsored in part by the Women Gardeners of Ridgewood.

Adults

Watercolors with Maryann Burton – Beginner and intermediate instruction for adults on Wednesday mornings at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. $95/6 classes. Students must bring own materials.

Acrylics with Sandi Chanoch – Individual and personalized attention helps all find their personal techniques. Tuesday afternoons at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. Students must bring own materials. $80/6 classes.

Annie’s Artisanal Cookery – Holiday Hors D’Oeuvres Impress your friends with easy to make Holiday hors d’oeuvres that can be made in advance. All you need to do is reheat when needed and serve. Friday afternoons at the Stable, 259 N. Maple Avenue. $90/4 sessions, all ingredients provided.

Exterminator succumbed to bee sting in Franklin Lakes

Franklin lakes NJ,  Franklin Lakes PD, EMS, and FD, along with a paramedic unit from The Valley Hospital, responded to a 911 report of a man lying unconscious on the roof of a synagogue located at 375 Pulis Avenue sometime around 12 noon on Wednesday, 11/04. The victim, an exterminator, was pronounced dead on the scene by the paramedic team. He apparently succumbed to a bee sting.
