Oradell NJ,  Oradell and Paramus Fire Department and Rescue Squad personnel worked side-by-side using the “Jaws of Life” to extricate a driver and three (3) dogs from a wrecked 4-door BMW sedan that had collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Forest and Oradell Avenues in Oradell late (11:15 PM) Friday (10/16) night.

The BMW’s driver was seriously injured and transported by ambulance to The Valley Hospital; the occupants of the pickup truck were uninjured. All of the dogs in the BMW escaped injury. They were taken to a shelter in Midland Park operated by Tyco Animal Control Services. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and removed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. Oradell PD is investigating the crash, which, surprisingly, did not result in a full closure of the Forest Avenue/Oradell Avenue intersection.

John Mitchell just Might be the Hardest Working Freeholder Candidate this County Has Ever Seen

Ridgewood NJ, Unlike past years this years Freeholder contest is all about meeting and getting to know Bergen county. Candidate John Mitchell has been making the rounds non stop from months listen to what people in the county are concerned about .
It was a “Win-Win” at the Ridgewood train station this morning…

…It was a “win” that I was able to help a commuter understand the intricacies of the unfair school funding formula and how it impacts his ever rising property taxes. And it was also a “win” that I had a chance to meet hundreds of residents in this beautiful town.

“I’m always nervous when speaking to a large group of women and particularly beautiful women”…

…was my quote at the Republican Women’s Annual Candidates Showcase. In all seriousness though, the Bergen County Republican Women are the BCRO’s heart and soul and I very much appreciate their tireless hard work and support!

What is a Freeholder?…

…That was the operative question of the morning at the Oradell train station. When I explained that the The Board of Chosen Freeholders acts as the legislature for Bergen County and controls what county government can spend, things became a bit clearer…and certainly the commuters were happy to hear that my running mates and I have specific plans on how to reel in the ever burdensome property taxes hoisted on the backs of our hard working citizens.

…The Oradell train station also accommodates surrounding towns including the great town of New Milford. I was joined by New Milford Council Candidate Matt Seymour along with Oradell Council President Donna Alonso. Our tag teaming of commuters from the various towns was very productive indeed

“The Junior Statesmen of America”…

…were NJ Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi’s and my audience at Dwight Morrow High School. The subject today was how state and county government works followed by a rapid fire Q&A covering everything from the presidential election, Planned Parenthood, to how we entered politics. They kept us on our toes but is was very enjoyable for all.

“I love Bergen County but I know when I retire I will no longer be able to afford to live here.”…

…This has been a common sentiment as I campaign across the county, and River Edge was no exception. For that very reason my running mates and I have made it our top priority to tackle this problem, with property tax reduction at the top of the list.

“Paramus is a great place to live but please help us keep it that way!’…

…That was what I heard from the hard working commuters/voters at the Paramus Park & Ride this morning. Business attraction, business retention and the elimination of unnecessary business regulations summarizes the conversations I had. Will do!

Ridgewood Places 11th in List of top 10 Snobbiest Places in New Jersey ?

These Are The 10 Snobbiest Places In New Jersey

We analyzed over 200 places in Jersey to identify the ones that probably think they’re better than you.

When it comes to being a snob, you’ve got all types. You’ve got your wine snobs, beer snobs, and food snobs. There are book snobs, movie snobs, and theatre (yes, with an re) snobs. These days, you’ve probably even got snob snobs—people who think their type of snob is better than yours.

And of all the places in the U.S., you may not find a higher concentration of all of the above than in the Northeast—New Jersey in particular.

Yes, that’s right; Jersey isn’t all fist pumps, fugazis, and poufs. In fact, in these 10 places, it’s downright snooty:

Princeton
Chatham
Mendham
Edgewater
Glen Ridge
Bernardsville
Westfield
Hoboken
Summit
Oradell

Don’t get up on your high horse (unless you live in one of these 10 places, in which case, you pretty much live up there)—we didn’t just pull these 10 places out of our… hats. We relied strictly on the numbers to come up with this list. More on said numbers, in the next section.

More work needed to shore up Oradell Reservoir bridge

THE RECORD

A small bridge over the Oradell Reservoir used by trains hauling millions of gallons of crude oil has deteriorated to the point that the rail company will soon replace the 86-year-old span’s entire deck, according to a federal government inspection report.

While federal officials have said the bridge is structurally sound, the report by the Federal Railroad Administration indicates the bridge is in worse condition than its owner, CSX Corp., acknowledged shortly after it was inspected in March.

The 25-foot bridge crosses the northeast corner of the reservoir, which supplies drinking water to 800,000 people. As many as 30 trains — each carrying up to 3 million gallons of volatile Bakken crude — cross the bridge each week along the CSX River Line on the way to refineries on the East Coast, prompting concerns from local officials, firefighters and water company executives.

The bridge was inspected by the Federal Railroad Administration on March 31, just a few days after The Record reported that government officials had no current reports on the bridge’s condition.

At that time, government officials said the bridge passed inspection and CSX executives said some railroad ties would be replaced “as a matter of routine maintenance.”

But the one-page inspection report — released to the newspaper this week, almost two months after it was requested under the federal Freedom of Information Act – reveals the bridge required serious attention. It states that the bridge deck showed enough deterioration that CSX had already determined to replace it. CSX also ordered trains to reduce speed from 40 mph to 25 mph on the span to “protect the railroad as well as the public for safe passage of trains,” according to the inspection report.

The Federal Railroad Administration employee who inspected the bridge declined to comment.

But two things managed to put a little spring back in the Ridgewood junior’s stride Saturday as he got ready to run his fourth and final event, the 4-x-400.

First, he wanted to do his best. He knew his teammates were counting on him to help them hold on to second place in the Division A standings.

A canine flu outbreak has sickened many dogs in the Midwest, but whether the potentially deadly bug will make its way here is still anybody’s guess.

“It’s a hard question to answer but with today’s mobile society and people bringing their pets wherever they go, I’m concerned about that — that it could hit the West or East Coast,” said Dr. John DeVries, assistant director of the Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Veterinary Medicine says the virus has sickened at least 1,000 dogs in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana. Recent tests from the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have identified the strain as H3N2. Clinical assistant professor Keith Poulsen says it’s not yet known how effective current vaccines are against this strain, which is believed to have come from Asia.

He said an older strain, H3N8, has also been detected in the region.

Both viruses can cause persistent cough, runny nose and fever in dogs. Experts say a small percentage will develop more severe symptoms. The H3N2 infection has been associated with some deaths.

PARAMUS — An MRI machine exploded during maintenance at the Oradell Animal Hospital late Friday morning, critically injuring one repairman but sparing scores of employees and animals in the hospital, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.

The critically injured worker suffered cuts and crushing-related injuries; the other two had minor to moderate injuries including respiratory complaints, the chief said. He said their identities were being withheld pending family notification.

As of mid evening, the chief said there was no update on the most-severely injured man’s condition.

The explosion caused a small leak of helium, which cools the inside of the machine and can be dangerous in a closed area. The area was subsequently ventilated and made safe, Ehrenberg said.

Responding to reports at 11:51 a.m. of a fire and an explosion at the animal hospital at 580 Winters Ave., police found the ceiling of the east wing collapsed, but the building remained structurally sound, the chief said. There was no evidence of a fire, he said.

About 60 animals and 100 employees were in the building, the chief said, and the staff subsequently accounted for all animals and employees. They were moved to several contingent sites in the county, he said.

Tenafly voters reject proposal to move, expand nature center

TENAFLY — Borough voters on Tuesday decisively rejected a bitterly debated proposal to relocate and expand the Tenafly Nature Center on another part of its unbroken woodlands.

The referendum verdict of 2,107 to 1,536 was non-binding for borough officials poised to make final decisions about the proposal. But all sides in the two-year debate over the plan have already agreed to abide by voters’ wishes.

“I’m disappointed,” admitted Mayor Peter Rustin when he declared that opponents had prevailed.

Both the mayor and Mike Neus, chairman of the Tenafly Nature Center’s capital campaign, indicated in recent weeks that if the proposal is rejected, the issue of a new building would be dead. Opponents had contended that the existing building — considered by everyone now as substandard for the growing crowd of visitors that come for environment education — could be expanded somewhat. But Nature Center managers have said that would require an enormous amount of site work including rock blasting.

Roland Scharfspitz, a member of the Save the Tenafly Green Acres residents’ group that fought against the proposal, said, “We fought the good fight, and the town saw the right way. We saved a precious resource for the town.”
