Ridgewood NJ, one hundred eighty-five teams gathered at the Schuylkill River to compete in The Schuylkill Navy’s 96th Stotesbury Cup Regatta under perfect conditions. Ridgewood Crew sent 13 boats to compete against outstanding athletes from all parts of North America for two days of thrilling sportsmanship. Only Montclair had as many entries. Ridgewood Crew won three medals and had one additional boat race in finals.

Ridgewood NJ, Benjamin Franklin Middle School students were reminded of the real reason for Memorial Day when members of American Legion post 53 were invited to take part in the school’s annual Memorial Day Remembrance event. The event included vocals by BFMS’s own Sawyer Klein in a stunning rendition of the national anthem.

Ridgewood NJ, Much to the dismay of elected Ridgewood Board of Education members, during their Monday night public meeting, it was revealed that the much discussed and long awaited “World Language Curriculum” for elementary school students would include instruction in only Chinese, French, and German (that’s right; there were no plans developed to provide instruction in Spanish).

Ridgewood NJ, on Tuesday the US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, issued a new advisory warning of the mental health effects of social media on young people. While noting some benefits of the online platforms, the report warns of increasing concern and “ample indicators” that social media can have “a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents.”

Ridgewood NJ, we were quite surprised on Monday night when Michelle Fenwick, Director of Special Programs for the Ridgewood Public Schools, lost her cool while participating via an audio Zoom connection in a public meeting of the Board of Education. The discussion topic that triggered Dr. Fenwick’s fit was the proposed expansion of leased space at a building on Oak Street used by STEPSS (School Transition and Employment Program for Student Success) students.

Hanover Township NJ, Senator Joe Pennacchio and Senator Ed Durr expressed support for a policy adopted by the Hanover Township Board of Education that requires staff to notify parents when they become aware of anything that may impact a student’s well-being. They said an effort by Attorney General Platkin to stop the policy from being implemented is misguided.

Platkin co-led a coalition of 12 attorneys general in filing a comment letter supporting robust antidiscrimination protections for transgender students in response to a proposed rule by the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) that would clarify how schools receiving federal funding can remain in compliance with Title IX, a federal civil rights statute, when determining a transgender student’s eligibility to participate on school athletic teams.
