The Governor Doesn’t Have the Authority to Unilaterally Alter General Election by Executive Order

Trenton NJ, Senator Michael Doherty said the New Jersey Constitution doesn’t authorize Governor Phil Murphy to issue an Executive Order that unilaterally changes the manner in which voters will cast their ballots this November.

Doherty pointed to Article II, Section I of the New Jersey Constitution, which says: “General elections shall be held annually on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November; but the time of holding such elections may be altered by law.”

New Jersey Man Charged With Putting a “Hit” Out on a 14 Year Old

CAMDEN NJ,  A Camden County, New Jersey, man under investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office for child pornography-related offenses was arrested today for allegedly paying $20,000 in Bitcoin to have the child victim murdered, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

John Michael Musbach, 31, of Haddonfield, New Jersey, is charged by complaint with one count of murder-for-hire. He is scheduled to appear this afternoon by videoconference before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen M. Williams.

Trenton NJ, Senator Joe Pennacchio today called in-person voting a fundamental precept of American freedom and criticized Governor Murphy’s decision to limit the November election to vote-by-mail.

“We’ve gone through the Civil War, two world wars, natural disasters and depressions and we’ve always managed to vote in person,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “More than anything else, this is political.

State Revenue Update Undercuts Governor Murphy’s Borrowing Scheme

Trenton NJ, Senator Steven Oroho (R-24) said a State revenue update provided by the Treasury Department yesterday doesn’t support Governor Murphy’s claims that New Jersey is facing a massive budget shortfall that would require $10 billion of borrowing as the governor has repeatedly suggested.  (https://theridgewoodblog.net/deferred-nj-april-tax-payments-track-close-to-expectations/ )

“Treasury’s revenue update clearly demonstrates that the massive $10 billion budget hole predicted by the administration has failed to materialize,” said Oroho, the Senate Republican Budget Officer. “When compared to the original $38 billion budget for 2020, the $200 million decline in revenues from 2019 is little more than a rounding error. The realized revenue data provided by Treasury doesn’t support the governor’s continued insistence that New Jersey needs to borrow billions.”

Economy Picks Up : Deferred NJ April Tax Payments Track Close to Expectations

Trenton NJ,  The NJ Department of the Treasury today reported that July revenue collections for the major taxes totaled $5.136 billion, up $2.802 billion, or 120.1 percent over last July.  This inflated and unprecedented growth was anticipated due to the change in state law that allowed individual and corporate taxpayers to defer certain payments from April to July due to the COVID-19 pandemic, following similar tax changes that were instituted at the federal level.

The Gross Income Tax (GIT), which is dedicated to the Property Tax Relief Fund, totaled $3.360 billion, up $2.412 billion or 254.1 percent above last July.  While this growth is inflated because of the extended filing deadline, collections are still below Treasury’s $3.6 billion revised GIT target for July. However, lower-than-expected final and estimated payments by individuals were partially offset by improved employer withholding receipts.

New Jersey Supreme Court OK’s Murphy Administration Borrowing Scheme

Trenton NJ, the New Jersey Supreme Court today unanimously  sided with the Murphy Administration in deciding the law suit brought by Republicans against Governor Phil Murphy regarding the constitutionality of his $9.9 billion borrowing plan to combat the impact of COVID-19,  In the ruling the New Jersey Supreme Court today unanimously ruled the following:  “therefore [we] conclude that the Bond Act is constitutional, subject to certain limiting principles.”

Trenton NJ, Senator Joe Pennacchio today called on Governor Murphy to help make federal unemployment relief a reality for almost 700,000 out-of-work New Jersey residents.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Saturday that would provide an extra $400 more than basic unemployment benefits, replacing the $600 federal contribution that expired on July 31.

MAJORITY OF NEW JERSEYANS SAY IT’S TIME TO REOPEN GYMS

Trenton NJ, According to a new statewide survey released today, 57% of New Jersey voters want gyms and fitness centers to reopen, with strict safety protocols in place. In fact, after voters hear the specific safety precautions that those venues will follow, as well as other factors, support for reopening gyms grew to 69%.

The survey, conducted on behalf of the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey, found that the most compelling argument to reopen gyms is when comparing them to other establishments that have already reopened. More than seven-in-ten (71%) are more likely to support reopening gyms after learning that New Jersey has already allowed casinos, amusement parks, and museums to reopen, and that gyms have five times more square footage per person than establishments like cycling studios and hair salons that have also been allowed to reopen.

Restaurant Closings Rest at Governor Murphy’s Feet

Morristown NJ, The popular Market Taverne restaurant in Morristown is the latest causality due to New Jersey’s prohibition on indoor dining.

The decision to shut this restaurant down forever leaves 30 employees without jobs, and became public only days after another popular restaurant in the town, La Campagna announced they were going out of business.

“Tens of thousands of ballots remain uncounted, rejected or lost, disenfranchising tens of thousands of New Jersey voters,” Singh said. “But Phil Murphy’s Attorney General couldn’t care less because he’s more interested in representing the interests of Phil Murphy than the interests of the people.”

State Senator Testa Calls for Renewed Emphasis on Preventing Power Outages from Storms

Trenton NJ, Senator Michael Testa today said the massive power outages resulting from Tropical Storm Isaias prove there is much work remaining to make New Jersey’s power grid more robust.

“Every time a storm hits, the results are the same. Trees come down, wires come down, people go without power for days,” said Testa. “Trees growing too close to electrical lines is a recipe for trouble in storms, and as long as there’s resistance when the utility companies plan to cut back vegetation that jeopardizes power delivery to residents, we’re going to continue to suffer massive outages like the ones this week.

Individuals Arrested for Attempting to Ignite Police Vehicle Following Trenton Protests Facing 5 years in Prison

Trenton NJ,  Two New Jersey men have been charged with attempting to set fire to a marked police vehicle following the May 2020 protests in Trenton, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced today.

Killian F. Melecio, 20, of Columbus, New Jersey, and Kadeem A. Dockery, 29, of Trenton, were arrested Aug. 5, 2020, by special agents of the FBI and charged by complaint with one count of attempting to damage or destroy by fire a vehicle owned or possessed by an institution receiving federal financial assistance, and one count of attempting to damage or destroy by fire a vehicle used in and affecting interstate commerce. Melecio and Dockery appeared by videoconference before U.S. Magistrate Judge Tonianne J. Bongiovanni. Dockery was released; Melecio was detained pending a bail hearing.
