Dozens of municipalities have challenged hospitals and their current tax-exempt status

Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen)

A leading Senate Democrat is crafting a plan to revise a century-old law that permits the vast majority of New Jersey hospitals to avoid paying property taxes, a situation that has already prompted dozens of lawsuits in municipalities seeking to change this status quo.

Budget Chairman Paul Sarlo, (D-Bergen), said he is working on a bill that would require hospitals to pay regular fees, based on the number of beds or a similar mechanism, to their host communities to help fund local roads, first responders, and other costs now covered largely by municipal property taxes.

Lower-cost plan a hit with consumers, but litigating hospitals say Omnia gave preferential treatment to large facilities

Nearly 18 months after they filed suit against Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield to reveal details of how it formed its Omnia insurance network, hospital leaders and their attorneys may get to review documents and correspondence they believe are at the heart of their case.

But officials with Horizon, the state’s largest health insurance provider, said the drawn-out litigation is only distracting from more important battles: protecting federal funding for healthcare and working together to control costs while improving patient care.

Ridgewood to Hold Dog Rabies Clinic on May 10

Ridgewood NJ, Supervisor of Health, Dawn Cetrulo would like to remind Village of Ridgewood residents that 2017 dog license renewals are due during the month of June. A $20 late fee will be charged for all renewals received after June 30, 2017.

The Ridgewood free dog rabies clinic will be held on Wed. May 10 from 6-7pm at the Ridgewood Recycling Center on East Glen Ave.

The health department will be sending renewals notices via email. If you do not have an email address please call our office and request a renewal to be mailed to you. Renewal applications may also be obtained by visiting our website at www.ridgewoodnj.net or coming in person to the Ridgewood Health Department, 131 North Maple Ave. The office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm. Please call 201 670-5500 ext. 502 with questions.

New Jersey law requires owners of all dogs seven months of age or older to be registered with the town where they live. In order for the license to be issued, the owner must present proof that a licensed veterinarian has vaccinated the dog against rabies and that the duration of immunity from that vaccination does not expire before May 1, 2018. To receive the discount for a spayed or neutered pet, proof must also be provided.

Hire “specials” who can patrol the schools in the morning and protect us from the evil Verizon, PSE&G and NJ Transit workers during the day. Will help to reduce the obscene amount of OT the police department charges the Village as well by avoiding unecessary scheduling conflicts for extra duty work. We probably only need 25-30 full time cops if we hired specials. It would be a material cost savings for Village taxpayers, and we’d be just as safe. The police union won’t tell you this of course

There is a big demand for parking from 6-10pm weekends to accommodate the dining crowd from oak to broad area. If the lazy diners walked 3-4 blocks they could get a parking space,
Many good spaces haven been eliminated as they are dedicated valet .
Let the restaurant owners pay for the garage,
As a long time resident I have zero interest in subsiding your business

Reader says it is Implicit that guards may control traffic

Guards may be stationed only when it is necessary to control or direct vehicular or pedestrian traffic during those time periods of a school day when it is necessary to control traffic.” (N.J.S.A. 40A:9-154.4).

Implicit in the above is that guards may control traffic. And of course they could not do their job otherwise. They direct traffic in order to ensure the safety of children. they should not be concerned about traffic backups per se that don’t impair child safety. Any moron who is selfish enough to value the precious few minutes that it costs to obey the traffic management of a guard over the overall safety of school children should not drive on children’s routes to school

Reader :crossing guards are not allowed to direct traffic

As the first individual stated, crossing guards are not allowed to direct traffic. And sure, it is frustrating to be a guard and see traffic piling up and you are not allowed to direct it. Imagine if the guard directed a car and another car started to go and hit the first car. An insurance nightmare! The Police in Ridgewood are gradually being allowed to build up their department which will then free up a guard or two for traffic control near the schools. However, as the above poster noted, when the police are there, traffic behaves so well. But the very next day, the wild men take over the wheels. Hire auxiliary people trained in directing traffic to aid the crossing guards–one for cars, one for students? That would be cheaper than assigning police to every dangerous crosswalk. (Many are very safe locations and many are not.) But, again, it would probably be an insurance nightmare. Wouldn’t it be nice if all drivers were willing to recognize that other drivers also had a right to the road; that most of the cars dropping off at schools are parents who have to get to work at the same time that you do, etc.etc. What ever happened to common courtesy and treating others as you wished to be treated?

Survey: 1 In 5 Adults In The UK Can’t Change A Lightbulb, Boil An Egg

LONDON — Are you handy enough that if a lightbulb went out in your home you’d be able to change it? Believe it or not, one in five people aren’t so skilled. In fact, a new survey of people in the United Kingdom finds not only do about 20 percent of people not know how to change a bulb — the same number aren’t sure how to boil an egg, either.

The British insurance company Aviva recently released their annual Home Report which detailed, among numerous findings about how people do work around the house, relatively common tasks that people encounter. The company surveyed 2004 people across the UK in February and March about their habits and roles at home.

A stunning new survey from the United Kingdom found that one in five people did not know how to change a lightbulb or boil an egg.

In addition to just one in five not being able to change a lightbulb or boil an egg, the survey found that nearly a third of the participants couldn’t cook any meal on the fly. And if someone were to spill a portion of their meal on their clothes or on the floor, only 59 percent would know how to get rid of the resulting stain.

Only 37 percent could change a flat tire.

The findings were even surprising to the folks behind the study.

Chances are you’ve either heard of Netflix’s new series 13 Reasons Why, or your teen has expressed interest in watching it. An adaptation of a YA novel with the same name by Jay Asher, the series navigates the aftermath of high school student Hannah Baker’s suicide. Before taking her own life, Hannah creates 13 cassette tapes, each one dedicated to a person who somehow played a part in her decision to commit suicide, causing guilt and paranoia between members of the selected group. The series covers a number of heavy topics, to say the least, so if you’re the parent of a teen who has expressed interest in binge-watching the heartbreaking and brutally honest show, there are a few things you should know first.

Of course you know your child and what they can handle best, but the series is rated MA for a reason, as in addition to suicide, there are a number of other difficult topics touched upon such as sexual assault and rape, bullying, and depression. Because of this, we’d recommend teens 15 and older delving into the series. Although you may want to shield your teen from these heavy topics, they’re the same age as the kids in the series, meaning they may have already been exposed to some of these more difficult issues in one way or another at school or on social media.

So if your teen is interested in watching the series (or maybe they know nothing about it, but you’d like to watch it with them to open communication lines), here are a few things you should know — and a few reasons we support you in watching it with them — before you start binging.
