Bergen County Man Wins Nation’s Top Tutor

Paramus NJ, Bergen Community College peer writing tutor and academic coach Ricardo Santana has earned the College Reading and Learning Association’s (CRLA) 2023 Rick Sheets Outstanding Tutor Award, making him the top tutor from more than 1,200 accredited tutoring programs across the country. Santana works in the College’s Cerullo Learning Assistance Center, which has twice earned national honors as the best in the country as well. He represents the first Bergen student to earn the award. Santana will attend the CRLA Annual Conference this November in Baltimore, Maryland as a guest of honor and accept his award.

Paramus NJ,  Bergen Community College has launched multiple programs that will provide students with the opportunity to gain a foothold in the burgeoning cannabis industry. Financial research firm Morningstar, Inc. pegs cannabis as a $10 billion industry in the U.S. with the potential to rise exponentially in the coming decades as more states legalize the growth, use and sale of the plant and its derivatives.

Bergen Community College Cuts Ribbon On Small Business Support Office

Paramus NJ, In just six months, Bergen Community College students have assisted nearly 500 local entrepreneurs in bouncing back post-COVID as “small business support specialists” through a collaboration with the Bergen County Business Resource Network. This nationally heralded program has received recognition from numerous media outlets, government officials and business organizations. In recognition of the program’s growth, and to provide additional support for the students, Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III and Bergen County Commissioners Mary Amoroso, Germaine Ortiz and Thomas Sullivan joined Bergen President Eric M. Friedman, Ph.D., Oct. 20 as the College opened an office for the small business support specialists. The event coincided with Women’s Entrepreneurship Week, which helped influence the day’s activities as well. After the office doors officially opened, two local female restaurateurs who worked with the small business support specialist students presented refreshments showcasing their culinary talents, while Commissioner Amoroso led a panel discussion on women in entrepreneurship featuring local business owners.

Paramus NJ, Bergen Community College has extended its popular “inflation-busters” tuition freeze initiative through Aug. 1, giving students additional time to register for fall 2022 classes under the fall 2019 tuition rate ($146.50 per credit for Bergen County residents). The College’s latest student affordability program has already encouraged 4,743 students to register for fall classes.

Bergen Community College Students Create: “ScanCan” The Intelligent Recycling Bin

Paramus NJ, Last week Bergen Community College’s team at the Community College Intelligence Challenge in Washington, D.C. was named the #1 overall winner with their “ScanCan”: The Intelligent Recycling Bin.” The “ScanCan” is a recycling bin that senses whether or not a product is recyclable before allowing it to be disposed of. Congratulations to students Jacob Jalinski, Tyler Jacobs, and Roee Shalom along with faculty mentors Luis De Abreu and Joseph Sivo. They also earned a congratulations from Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco.

Ridgewood Academy for Health Professions Capstone Symposium was Held at Ridgewood High School

Ridgewood NJ, the RAHP (Ridgewood Academy for Health Professions) Capstone Symposium was held on Thursday, May 26 in the Ridgewood High School Campus Center. This three-year program in partnership with The Valley Hospital and Bergen Community College integrates honors-level academic courses with experiences and content in the healthcare setting. At the event, juniors presented team research projects, while seniors presented individual research projects.

Missing Teen Found Safe in Clifton

Paramus NJ, the  19-year-old Bergen County College student who went missing Wednesday has been found. According to Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton ,the teen was found safe by Clifton police at the Wendy’s on Main Avenue Friday and is back with her family. Police do not yet have details about where she has been the past few days, Cureton said.

Bergen Community College Signs Transfer Agreement With Stockton University

Paramus NJ,  Bergen Community College has signed a dual admission and transfer partnership agreement with Stockton University that will help students make a smooth transition from the institution to Stockton’s bachelor’s degree program. The five-year agreement strengthens the relationship between Bergen and Stockton by offering multiple opportunities for students to seamlessly pursue associate and bachelor’s degrees at the two institutions of higher education.
