Hawthorne NJ, Hawthorne Police, Fire, EMS and Passaic County HazMat responded to multiple 911 reports of a irritating chemical odor inside of an apartment building located at 55 Westervelt Avenue, Hawthorne on Saturday morning, 02/17. The odor was traced to a contractor’s use of a chemical product that caused combustible fumes inside of the structure. Hawthorne EMS evaluated two (2) residents who complained of illness; both refused ambulance transportation to a local hospital. Hawthorne Fire Department personnel from Companies 2 & 3 assisted in ventilating the building.

Hawthorne NJ, Hawthorne Police and EMS responded to aid a mother and female child who were both struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Lafayette Avenue and Van Winkle Avenue on Monday morning, 01/22. Injuries to both victims appeared to have been non life threatening in nature. The driver of the SUV who struck the two (2) remained at the scene and was cooperating with police officers.

Hawthorne NJ, Hawthorne Fire Chief Joseph Speranza reported that a burst 3-inch water pipe caused “significant” damage at a 3-story multi-tenant commercial/industrial building located at 85 Wagaraw Road, Hawthorne on Wednesday night, 01/03. All Hawthorne FD Fire Companies responded to the location along with a rescue truck from Prospect Park Fire Department. Fire department units in Glen Rock, North Haledon, and Wyckoff were placed on standby in their own quarters until Hawthorne units cleared the scene.

Hawthorne NJ, Hawthorne Police & Fire Department units responded to a Friday evening, 12/15, rollover crash on the lawn of 56 Forest Avenue, Hawthorne. The male driver of a 1994 Jeep Cherokee was uninjured in the crash. A hydraulic lift tow truck righted the vehicle before its removal from the scene.

Hawthorne NJ, A 20-year old female who allegedly kicked in the front door of a home on Rock Road in Hawthorne, violating a temporary restraining order (TRO) the the process, was apprehended and taken into custody by Hawthorne Police on Goffle Road, Hawthorne just moments after the incident was reported via a 911 telephone call. No injuries were reported by the home’s occupants, nor any of the uniformed patrol officers who affected the arrest. The vehicle the alleged perpetrator used to flee the incident was impounded by Hawthorne Police and towed from the arrest location. NOTE: All persons shall be presumed innocent until found guilty by a final decision of the court

Hawthorne NJ, Route 208 southbound at Goffle Road in Hawthorne was temporarily closed due to flooding on Sunday afternoon, 10/29. Hawthorne Police and DPW employees cleared at least two (2) storm drains of fallen leaves in the vicinity of the NYS&W railroad crossing before the roadway could be reopened.

Hawthorne NJ, Hawthorne Police and EMS personnel responded to a two (2) vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Utter and Ninth Avenues on Tuesday afternoon, 10/10. An adult male victim was transported to The Valley Hospital by Hawthorne EMS; he sustained a non-life threatening arm injury. The wrecked 4-door sedan involved in the collision was removed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck.

Hawthorne NJ, No injuries were reported following a Tuesday evening, 09/26, crash in which a 4-door sedan was inadvertently driven into an open construction trench on Goffle Road under Route 208 in Hawthorne. The vehicle was removed from its predicament by a flatbed tow truck. Hawthorne Police officers were on the scene monitoring traffic flow at the construction site when the incident occurred. No word from officers on the scene as to whether any summonses would be issued in connection with the crash. The driver was provided with a “courtesy” ride home by Hawthorne Police.

Hawthorne NJ, Hawthorne PD responded to the intersection of Goffle Hill Road and New York Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, 08/02, to investigate a reported motor vehicle collision involving a baby deer. The responding uniformed patrol officers located the injured fawn lying on the lawn of a nearby home, and interviewed the adult female driver involved in the incident. Tyco Animal Control Services was dispatched as per protocol. Sadly, the animal’s injuries were serious enough to warrant putting it down (handled by Tyco). No summonses were issued in connection with the incident.

Hawthorne NJ, Hawthorne Police and Fire personnel responded to a downed tree limb in front of 124 Maitland Avenue, Hawthorne on Wednesday afternoon, 07/19. The fallen limb blocked the roadway and took out electric, internet/phone, and cable TV service to one (1) home on the street. Hawthorne DPW workers cleared the roadway after a PSE&G troubleshooter cut the dropped electric line. No injuries were reported.

Hawthorne NJ, for the second time this week ,a black bear that’s been wandering around a Hawthorne neighborhood for the past few days was treed again, this time in the rear yard of a home located within the 800 Block of Lafayette Avenue Extension, Hawthorne, on Tuesday evening, 06/13. Several Hawthorne PD units responded to residents’ telephone calls of a bear running through back yards. However, based upon an advisory from NJDEP Fish & Game officials via telephone, no attempt was made to capture the bear due to the approach of darkness. Police advised residents to stay indoors until the bear came down from the tree and left the area. One police officer on the scene indicated that the bear appeared to be injured.

Hawthorne NJ, A black bear likely to have been the same one seen early Monday morning, 06/12, roaming around outside of the Jefferson Middle School in Hawthorne, was spotted perched (and eating) in a tree of a Goffle Hill Road, Hawthorne home late Monday afternoon, 06/12. Hawthorne PD units along with a representative of Tyco Animal Control Services responded to assess the situation. It was determined that the bear presented no immediate danger to residents of the home, who were asked to stay inside in the hopes that the animal would come down from the tree and wander off if it did not feel threatened by the presence of a human.

Hawthorne NJ, An adult female driver lost control of her vehicle while traveling northbound on Goffle Road in Hawthorne and slid off the roadway into Goffle Brook Pond on Sunday morning, 02/12. An adult male passerby and a uniformed Hawthorne PD patrol officer jumped into the pond and successfully removed the driver before the vehicle became submerged.

The victim was taken to a local hospital by a Hawthorne ambulance The vehicle, a 4-door sedan, was lifted from the water by a heavy duty tow truck. A flatbed tow truck then removed it from the scene. The passerby, uniformed police officer, and one (1) firefighter who were exposed to the icy water during the vehicle recovery process, were all reported to be fine after drying out and warming up.
