Hackensack NJ, Yesterday, the U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams, M.D., “advised hospitals to cancel elective surgeries during the COVID-19/novel coronavirus pandemic.” Additionally, the American College of Surgeons also issued recommendations for management of elective surgical procedures. In response, Hackensack Meridian Health announced that non-urgent and non-emergency hospital/campus-based surgeries and procedures will be postponed for two weeks. This new policy will be fully effective on Tuesday, March 17.

This temporary measure will allow our hospitals to enact preparedness plans we have been developing for weeks to create capacity and continue to deliver high quality care during the anticipated surge in COVID-19 cases.

Surgeries and procedures will continue to take place at our non-hospital, off-campus sites. Our physician offices are open.

Reader says ,Valley in Ridgewood has already lost – Hackensack is the regional hospital of choice

Bike Valley theridgewoodblog.net 71

Valley has already lost – Hackensack is the regional hospital of choice. Valley (and their arrogant supporters) just seem to want to win their battle with Ridgewood. Fact is, in order to have had any shot against Hackensack, they needed to have finished this expansion years ago but they’re still battling that handful of pesky neighbors that don’t know what’s good for them.

Ridgewood NJ,as previously reported a Ridgewood High School sophomore LAX player is recovering well from a Friday procedure at Hackensack University Medical Center after being hit in the neck with a lacrosse ball. Ridgewood High School’s Jack Kennedy was in the ICU after a procedure that repaired his cracked Adam’s apple and three other fractures in his throat, according to his aunt, Laurie Alessi of Ridgewood.

Laurie Alessi gave this update on Facebook :  “Dr was in and although he is progressing he is still very internally swollen and bruised. Drainage tube is out. Vocal chord still not moving but his voice is actually ok. Time will tell on that. Not much can be done about that right now . He can talk but isn’t supposed to for at least a week preferably 2 to aid in the swelling coming down. Imagine a 16 year old not talking! He isn’t where he needs to be in order to come home safely. So we are looking at Wednesday now. Not what we were hoping for but better to be here and be safe than sorry. Keep those prayers coming thank u for the outpouring of love we have received this past week. We truly appreciate everything everyone has done for our family ! Way to many names to list!”

Hackensack NJ, According to the Bergen Record , “A 31-year-old woman from Honduras, a nation ravaged by the Zika virus, gave birth to a baby suffering from the devastating effects of the virus on Tuesday at Hackensack University Medical Center, the first apparent case in the tri-state area, her physician said.”

It is believed the mother contracted the disease in Honduras after being bitten by a mosquito early in her pregnancy, and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed she was infected with the Zika virus, according to Dr. Manny Alvarez, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Hackensack.

Dr. Alvarez said that the baby delivered by Cesarean-section on Tuesday suffered from low birth weight and severe microcephaly, in which the baby’s head is smaller than expected. This condition can lead to seizures, developmental delays, hearing loss and severe mental disabilities. The baby was also born with intestinal issues and visual issues,

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has previously issued a travelers alert for Honduras.

According to the CDC website a total of 591 cases of Zika virus have been reported in the United States, including 14 in New Jersey and 127 in New York, and in each case the victims contracted the virus while travelling abroad.
