Dana Abel’s exhibit, “Ten Years – A Retrospective – Oil and Pastel Works” is at the Cottage Place Gallery in Ridgewood through Dec. 6.

A Ridgewood resident since 1994, Abel, a professional software developer, says painting was always her primary interest and once her youngest child reached teenage years, she started taking numerous painting classes and workshops. She studied pastel privately with Christina Debarry and oil with Aleksandra K. Nowak and with Basil Baylin and Joe Hing Lowe at the Ridgewood Art Institute. Since entering her first exhibition in 2003, Abel has received numerous awards at the local and national levels.

“Pastel is more immediate – quick and it is easier to see the final outcome,” she said. Featured pastels are: “Blue Vase,” “Daisies,” a RAI 28th Regional Open Jury Show award winner, “Gladioli,” and a portrait, “Redhead,” an early work.

the Ridgewood Blog Once again rolls out the “shop Ridgewood” Campaign in Conjunction with Small business Saturday

Record Number of Consumers Are Aware of Small Business Saturday®, Almost two-thirds (65%) plan to spend at least $100

Small Business Saturday is November 28th

77 percent of U.S. consumers are planning to ‘Shop Small®’ this holiday season

November 27,2015

Ridgewood NJ, As small business owners across the nation gear up for Small Business Saturday, a record number of shoppers are making plans to support their favorite local businesses. According to the fourth-annual Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, released today by the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) and American Express, supporting local small businesses continues to be a priority for shoppers nationwide.

“We’re immensely proud to be a founding partner of Small Business Saturday, and it is gratifying to see how it has become the movement that it is today.”

Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 as a response to small business owners’ most pressing need: getting more customers. Held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday helps rally communities to support local businesses. As Small Business Saturday enters its sixth year, 55 percent of U.S. consumers report they are aware of the day – the highest figure yet recorded – and even more encouraging, 83 percent say Small Business Saturday inspires them to Shop Small all year long.

“Small Business Saturday is a major part of the holiday shopping tradition, and has become a celebration of the local small business owners that we call friends, neighbors and family,” said Janey Whiteside, Senior Vice President and General Manager of American Express OPEN. “We’re immensely proud to be a founding partner of Small Business Saturday, and it is gratifying to see how it has become the movement that it is today.”

“Small Business Saturday has grown every year and it’s been a big boost to Main Street America,” said NFIB CEO and President Dan Danner. “We are very proud to partner with American Express once again this year to promote an event that connects American consumers with their hometown businesses.”

Additional findings from the Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey include:

80% of consumers are willing to pay slightly more for an item if it is purchased from a small, independently-owned retailer as opposed to online or at a large retailer
On average, consumers are planning to do 35% of their holiday shopping at small businesses
45% of consumers who expect to shop on the day plan to spend more on Small Business Saturday this year than they spent last year
Almost two-thirds (64%) of consumers who plan to shop on Small Business Saturday are motivated by the contributions that small businesses make to their community

Community Involvement Grows; Additional Activities Provide Shopping Experiences Throughout the Day

Part of what helps make Small Business Saturday a success is the Small Business Saturday Coalition, which helps rally communities to Shop Small on November 28th. The Coalition was created in 2011 and is led by Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP). The Coalition is comprised of national, state and local associations that help coordinate Shop Small activities with merchants, consumers and small business owners.

Another important group that drives Small Business Saturday activities is Neighborhood Champions, which is comprised of small businesses, business associations, local Chambers of Commerce, and other community organizers. To date, more than 3,500 Neighborhood Champions – an increase of 26 percent from 2,786 in 2014 – have signed up to plan local community activities leading up to and on the day.

November 23 – E Notice – Leaves by the Numbers

Dear Neighbor,

I just wanted to provide you with a status of where we are with leaves at this point in the season. As of last Friday, we collected 20,295 yards or 58% of the total yardage typically collected for the entire season. Compared to last year at this time, we have collected 6,300 yards or 18% more. This is directly related to the heavy dropping of leaves we had about 1 ½ weeks ago after the rain storm.

As a result of the above, it has been taking us a little longer (about two extra days) to finish up in an area and begin the next area. In previous communications, I have mentioned that we have had some operational issues with the new contractor we are using in Area B – although we are still monitoring him closely, he has picked up double the amount at this point in the season than last year’s contractor. Another interesting factoid is that Area B is responsible for about 35% of the total leaves that have been picked up this season.

Net-net this makes collection more cumbersome for the present time, but bodes well for the remainder of the season as the bulk of the leaves are down or have been collected; therefore the last weeks of collection should be easier. Please bear with us, as we do our best to clean up as much volume as possible before the Thanksgiving holiday. As a reminder, we will be doing a last go through after your final collection date, weather permitting. For residents who like to bag their leaves, free bags are still available for pick up at the Recycling Center.

On to another topic: violations of the leaf collection policy. As you know, we listened to you last year when you reported that your biggest issue was neighbors placing leaves out on the street outside of the permitted schedule. This is just not a safety issue and a violation of our ordinance but it is also a violation of NJ State regulations that mandate leaves cannot be put out more than 7 days prior to the scheduled collection date.

As a result, this season we started active compliance monitoring of the various areas. I think I mentioned in an earlier E-Notice that we saw a large number of violations the first weeks of the season supporting the views that you have been sharing with me. On my own block, I witnessed leaves being placed in the street two days after the collection period! We made a decision not to write summonses at that point but to issue warnings. This was also due to the fact that this violation required an in court appearance, a burden we did not want to place on our residents.

Now that we are almost through the second cycle of leaf collection, we are issuing summonses and there will unfortunately be many of them. The only fortunate news is that the Court Administrator successfully petitioned to remove the requirement for an in-court appearance.

Ridgewood is a very leafy town – we collect between 32,000-35,000 yards of leaves across 95 miles of roads – a real challenge when coupled with the vagaries of weather. I would like to continue to hear your input on enforcement as well as any other suggestions that you may have for better service. Some of you may have seen our new claw which we just introduced and which seems to be working very well – we plan on adding a second one for next leaf season. Also next season, we will also be getting a new leaf vacuum that is significantly better than the ones we are using. We did a post mortem of last season and we will do one this season – we do bring your suggestions and thoughts to those forums.

Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving,

Roberta

Rev. James Martin speaks in Ridgewood

Father James Martin

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The Rev. James Martin, a renowned writer and former businessman, made an appearance at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on Nov. 10, speaking about his new novel and other contemporary issues.

With approximately 200 listeners sitting at attention, the Wharton School of Business graduate offered background for his new work, “The Abbey,” before commencing one of the few parts of public speaking with which he has little experience: a book reading.

“We’re going to do a book reading tonight, which I’m new at,” Martin confided to the crowd. “It’s a little bit of a different presentation for me.”

The novel, which was written as a result of a dream that Martin had, explores the lives of various individuals and their experiences regarding a nearby abbey. Though he does not normally keep track of his dreams, Martin admitted that this one resonated with him.

“This particular dream that I had was a fully-formed story … so I forced myself up at 2 a.m. and wrote it down in a journal,” he said. “In the dream, the names of the characters were there, the name of the monastery was there, and the whole story was there.”

Not wanting to waste such an opportunity to share his dream and aware that any work he does raises funds for his Jesuit community, Martin decided to turn his work into a short story, and eventually into a full-fledged novel.

Restaurant review: Fish Urban Dining Ridgewood

Fish

NOVEMBER 20, 2015    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2015, 7:26 AM

THE RECORD

Upon entering the new Fish Urban Dining Ridgewood, it’s best to look up. Gazing high provides glamour and drama: ceilings that soar, dramatic chandeliers fit for a ballroom, swaths of fabric crisscrossing tall windows, intricate molding and second-floor private dining areas with lovely views of the entire scene. All perks of dining in a venerable old bank building.

But looking at your plate can be a mixed story. Over my two meals, there was a flawless bowl of raw ahi tuna poke that could have come straight from a Hawaiian luau and a bountiful, well-seasoned crab cake. But there was also a drab-looking, bitter-tasting bowl of monkfish and a plate of limp, undercooked scallops. Fish’s food has a ways to go before it matches the scenery.

Owners James and Karen DeGilio opened Fish in July in the historic landmark First National Bank and Trust Co. building on Ridgewood Avenue that was most recently home to Bank of America. Their original Fish in Asbury Park also occupies a former bank building, and when they decided to start another restaurant, they were drawn to renovate the landmark in Karen’s native Bergen County. While they won’t say how much they spent on the renovation — James admits growing “dizzy every time I say that number” — the job was clearly extensive and meticulous. Workers salvaged marble from the teller windows, which then became part of the raw bar and the bathroom vanities.

The Ridgewood Art Institute Annual Holiday Show and Sale features more than 150 pieces of beautiful artwork. This year there is also a Small Works Fundraising Exhibit with 80 pieces priced at $150 with all proceeds to benefit RAI. The opening reception is being held on Sunday, Nov. 22 from 1 to 4 p.m.

It’s a wonderful exhibit to visit and these one-of-a-kind paintings can prove to be a unique holiday gift as well.

“It’s one of the most exciting shows of the year” said RAI instructor Laura Paray. Oils, watercolors, pastel and drawings are on exhibit and painted by members of the Institute. Members were invited to enter two original works to be exhibited in this festive holiday setting.

New England’s beautiful scenery was a favorite for the “Barn” artists with Charles Brandenburg’s watercolor, “Gloucester Fog,” and Edward Galenkamp’s “Inner Harbor – Nantucket.”
