Ramsey NJ, Dr. Matthew Murphy, superintendent of the Ramsey Public Schools, has extended an invitation to the Ridgewood community to attend their Parent Academy with Kate Fagan, author of What Made Maddy Run, on Monday, January 29 at 7 p.m. at the Ramsey High School Auditorium. Madison Holleran graduated from NHRHS prior to attending University of Pennsylvania.

What Made Maddy Run is a very powerful book that discusses some of the challenges that children are facing: social media, mental illness, and suicide. In fact, all staff members have received a copy of the book and Ms. Fagan will be addressing the entire staff in the afternoon. Later in the afternoon, she will be addressing our student-athletes and coaches to talk about the additional pressures of being a scholar-athlete. These are just some examples being taken towards the District’s Goal of Enhancing the Student Experience via a focus on Wellness.

An evening with author Kate Fagan:”Ms. Fagan brings enormous credibility and I think her story will be interesting to many,” wrote Dr. Murphy. “She played basketball for the University of Colorado and finished her career as one of the Big 12’s top scorers and then played 2 seasons in the WNBA. Following athletics, Ms. Fagan has worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer and now is a writer for ESPN. She has appeared on “Around the Horn.” She has written several books and has established herself as a sportswriter with knowledge and insight that is useful and important, especially young athletes.”

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Schools are presenting an important program on digital mindfulness, Nov. 29: The Wellbeing series combines with the Tech Nights initiative to host Devorah Hetiner, Ph.D. on Wednesday, November 29. Dr. Heitner’s program, Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World, will cover criteria by which parents and guardians may judge the quality of their children’s media experiences and offer tips to help them become tech-positive parents.

Dr. Heitner is an experienced speaker, workshop leader and consultant, and a professional development resource for organizations wishing to cultivate a culture of responsible digital citizenship. She holds a doctorate in Media/Technology and Society from Northwestern University and is the founder of Raising Digital Natives, for parents and educators seeking advice on how to help children thrive in a world of digital connectedness.

The evening with Dr. Heitner will take place from 7-9 p.m. at the George Washington Middle School Auditorium, 155 Washington Place. It is free and open to the adult public.

Facebook knocks down massive spammer network

The social network says it had been “combating” the operation for six months.

Facebook famously boasts it has 1.86 billion users who visit the social network every month. It looks like that number shrank on Friday.

The company, which previously announced it’s cracking down on fake accounts, said it’s disrupted a major spam operation being run out of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and other countries.

“The apparent intent of the campaign was to deceptively gain new friend connections by liking and interacting primarily with popular publisher Pages on our platform, after which point they would send spam,” Shabnam Shaik, a Facebook technical program manager wrote in a blog post.

“We found that most of this activity was generated not through traditional mass account creation methods, but by more sophisticated means that try to mask the fact that the accounts are part of the same coordinated operation,” Shaik wrote. “By disrupting the campaign now, we expect that we will prevent this network of spammers from reaching its end goal of sending inauthentic material to large numbers of people.”

The number of authentic users matters for Facebook because the company charges marketers and advertisers to reach the most eyeballs. Facebook didn’t reveal the number of accounts affected by this crackdown.

Study: Social Media Making People Anti-Social, Jealous

Could social media be making people more anti-social?

Many people who use social media may go to desperate lengths to receive “likes” from followers, the study found.

The social media boom continues to make it easier than ever to stay in touch with loved ones in real time. But with the flourishing of new technology and the ability to be connected to anyone and everyone at any time, real-life human interactions could be suffering a heavy blow.

A recent global study conducted by Kasperksy Lab reveals that social media users are interacting less face-to-face than in the past because of this newfound ability to constantly communicate and stay in touch online. In the study, researchers found that about one-third of people communicate less with their parents (31%), partners (23%), children (33%) and friends (35%) because they can simply follow them on social media. This may be doing more harm than good, in a world where editing one’s life to make it appear perfect is more appealing than naturally existing.

“Under certain circumstances they perceive their online communication as ‘hyper-personal communication’ and thus they can misread and over-interpret the messages on social media,” said Dr. Astrid Carolus, Media Psychologist at the University of Würzburg. “We feel especially close, we blind out the rather negative, focus on the possible positive intentions behind a message, and over-interpret.”

The study was conducted between October and November of last year among 16,750 participants, split evenly between men and women at least 16 years old from 18 countries, each of whom was surveyed online.

Massive networks of fake accounts found on Twitter

Massive collections of fake accounts are lying dormant on Twitter, suggests research.

The largest network ties together more than 350,000 accounts and further work suggests others may be even bigger.

UK researchers accidentally uncovered the lurking networks while probing Twitter to see how people use it.

Some of the accounts have been used to fake follower numbers, send spam and boost interest in trending topics.

Ridgewood Nj, Joseph Rullo, a longshot GOP candidate who entered the race more than a year ago in 2015 has been in nonstop campaign mode.

Rullo is patterning his campaign on the Trump campaign with a heavy use of social media, and drain the swamp mantra pointed at Trenton.

Rullo promises as Governor I will reduce property taxes, repeal the .23 gas tax, dissolve the transportation SLUSH fund, Veto all tax increases, cut billions in political earmarked jobs and contracts, eliminate state income taxes on pensions for retirees and add 1 billion in new revenue sources to further lower taxes. I Will dissolve the Transportation Trust Fund and consolidate all highway authorities eliminating redundant high-level management positions, eliminate high-cost earmark & specialty contracts tied to contributors. It will produce millions in savings with shared services and purchases. I will eliminate tolls and repeal the gas tax with the savings from the new efficient transparent highway entity. I will also eliminate 1.3 billion in pension fees to NYC politically connected brokerage houses and replace with licensed brokers in the state investors division to pay towards pension payment. Superintendents and business administrators need to be reduced drastically. Instead of having one superintendent and business administrator per school district, we need to cut the number to one per county. By consolidating superintendents & business administrators, we can save $50 million per year by eliminating superintendents alone. And will work to also eliminate municipal tax assessors to one per county. I will fire hundreds of high-salary patronage jobs like indicted Port Authority’s David Wildstein, as an example, saving hundreds of millions of dollars to cut taxes.

After winning 7 polls Rullo tells the Ridgewood blog If the election were held today without the rigging, we would win huge.

When asked yesterday if he feared backing Trump in very blue New Jersey, Rullo called Hillary a gun grabber.

Rullo told NJ.com “People are understanding that in Trenton, it’s all about helping friends and family and contributors,” he added. “I am prepping a massive overhaul of Trenton. I’m not in the establishment.”

Assassination threats against Trump flood Twitter

The shock and anger over Donald Trump’s ascension to the White House has triggered a flood of calls on Twitter and other social media outlets for the president-elect to be assassinated — and authorities will investigate all threats deemed to be credible, The Post has learned.

Trump met Thursday with President Obama in the Oval Office, with the Republican businessman calling the hour-plus session a “great honor.” Obama said they had an “excellent” and “wide-ranging” conversation while urging all people to “now come together.”

But that message of inclusion was apparently lost in social media circles, particularly Twitter, where a simple search can reveal dozens and dozens of calls to gun down the next leader of the free world. Some posts called for both Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence to be assassinated, and there’s even an #AssassinateTrump hashtag.

Facebook Inc.’s software knows your face almost as well as your mother does. And like mom, it isn’t asking your permission to do what it wants with old photos.

While millions of internet users embrace the tagging of family and friends in photos, others worried there’s something devious afoot are trying block Facebook as well as Google from amassing such data.

As advances in facial recognition technology give companies the potential to profit from biometric data, privacy advocates see a pattern in how the world’s largest social network and search engine have sold users’ viewing histories for advertising. The companies insist that gathering data on what you look like isn’t against the law, even without your permission.

The rise of social media would seem an unmitigated boon for free speech, providing a platform to anyone with an internet connection. But recent news about Facebook illuminates pitfalls that belie that optimistic view.

“Some of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s posts on Facebook have set off an intense debate inside the social media company over the past year,” The Wall Street Journal reports. Some employees argued that “certain posts about banning Muslims from entering the U.S. should be removed for violating the site’s rules on hate speech, according to people familiar with the matter.”

Trump chatter breaking all records on Facebook

Every week this month, Donald Trump has shattered his previous records for generating Facebook conversation, and last week users generated more than 307 million likes, comments, shares and posts about him. The prior week, Trump had 253 million Facebook interactions, and the week before that, he had 220 million, according to weekly data provided by Facebook.

By comparison, Hillary Clinton also hit her all-time high last week with 206 million interactions on Facebook. It was the first time she broke 200 million interactions.

Great debate Streaming tonight at 9pm

Ridgewood NJ, if you are looking to follow the great debate tonight on line here are some options for streaming and social media .Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump will square off at 9 pm Eastern at Hofstra University.

Of course all of the networks and major cable outlets have an online presence, so of course they are streaming the debates along with digital-first outlets like Buzzfeed News, The Daily Caller, Huffington Post, Politico, and Yahoo. Telemundo, theWall Street Journal, and Hulu will stream it, too.

Also look for Facebook Live broadcasts from journalists and those packed into Hofstra. Twitter will use the same live streaming system it uses for Thursday night football, trading sacks for fact checks and leaning on Bloomberg for footage. The candidates won’t be wearing Specs, but Snapchat will compile Live Stories for bite-sized debate nuggets. YouTube will feature coverage from NBC News, PBS, Fox News, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, and Telemundo.
