Ridgewood NJ, at a recent Fields Committee meeting, officials revealed early-stage plans to upgrade the BF athletic field, with both natural grass renovation and artificial turf installation currently under consideration.
Ridgewood NJ, the March 5 Village Council meeting was wild. The Schedler property was all over the agenda, including a carefully orchestrated presentation by the people who are being paid a bucket-load of our tax dollars to test the soil which was illegally dumped there thanks to Village “Engineer” Chris Rutishauser. Seems that the entire berm and maybe up to two feet of flat-land soil will have to be removed and go to wherever bad soil goes for processing. A number of residents spoke about the artificial turf being dangerous, and words like “shady” and “corrupt” were lobbed at the council. Concerns about the trees on the berm being saved for replanting and the fact that flat-land trees will die when soil is excavated deep down around their trunks and roots were raised. The council as well as Village Manager Keith Kazmark fired back, basically calling residents liars. The Village Manager Kazmark seems to have serious anger-management issues; he was red hot with indignation. Councilwomen “Squirrel” Winograd went on and on about how certain residents were lying. Council”man” Weitz repeated his oft-used phrase that the turf issue is simply a difference of opinion (not a difference of fact versus lies). This is better than anything on Netflix .
Ridgewood NJ, Results for soil samples taken at the Schedler Property on June 26 and 27, 2024 were finally uploaded to the Village website on August 8. The 6952 page report confirms what residents had reported for years, dangerous and hazardous substances extend beyond the berm into the 7 acre parcel.
Ridgewood NJ, artificial turf advisory signs now posted in other communities.
Artificial turf fields have become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly for sports like soccer, football, and lacrosse. However, there are some concerns about the potential dangers of playing on turf fields, especially for young people. Here are some of the potential risks:
Artificial turf has become a popular choice for homeowners and businesses alike in Layton, UT, offering a variety of benefits that natural grass can’t match. This article explores the diverse uses of artificial turf, highlighting its practicality and appeal in different settings.
Ridgewood NJ, in a discussion about the fields, artificial turf, and grass seed options at the April 8, 2024 meeting of the Ridgewood Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Schwarz said (verbatim):
Ridgewood NJ, New research suggests that athletes who engage in sports on artificial turf may be exposed to higher levels of toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” than before participating in the activity, adding to concerns about the safety of this widely used material.
Ridgewood NJ, on Monday night Ridgewood Board of Education meeting , the Board admitted that the fields may be heading for additional flooding this week. The turf field is severely damaged. We are considering all options, working with the Village of Ridgewood, US Army Corps. of Engineers, the NJ DEP and Rep. Gottheimer’s office.
Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Board of Education held a vigorous discussion on the Ridgewood field policy led by Hyunju Kwak, Vice President. The Fields Committee: Village Council, BOE, and Sports Teams meet on September 12th; meeting are held first Tuesday of month at 7am and they are open to the public. Next meeting is October 3rd.
Ridgewood NJ, as a candidate for elected office, private citizen Siobhan Winograd said something different about developing the Schedler property than now Councilwoman Siobhan Winograd is saying. Check out this campaign mailer of hers we just dug up.
Hmm. Did anyone notice whether the Councilwoman’s pants were on fire the last time she was seen in public?
Ridgewood NJ, here we go again ,the Ridgewood Board of Education is planning to install another artificial turf field on Stevens Field which exists in an active flood plain. It is bad for the environment, our players, community and our pocket books. It defies reason. Looks like we are going too keep doing it till we get it right?

Glen Rock NJ, On Saturday, Aug. 5, a sinkhole appeared at the southeast corner of the football field.
District employees quickly responded to the situation and secured the area. The hole was appropriately covered, gates to the field and track were locked, and signage was posted, letting the public know that the area is temporarily off limits. For safety purposes, lights were left on overnight and security personnel were in place on Sunday, to discourage anyone from disregarding the signs and entering the field complex.
On Monday, Aug. 7 the district reached the Contractor of Record, Quality Electric. After assessing the situation, the contractor informed the district late Tuesday, Aug. 8 that the damage will be repaired at no cost to the board since all work is still covered under the warranty. Further, the district has been notified that Quality Electric will be using Land Tek (the company that installed the turf football field) to repair the damage and restore the field. Land Tek is scheduled to begin the work on Thursday, Aug. 10; completion is anticipated by the weekend.
The district intends to have the field complex ready for the start of next week’s athletic practices.

TRENTON — A leading state senator said Monday she will formally urge the state Attorney General’s Office to investigate the top U.S. maker of artificial sports fields, FieldTurf, after the company failed to answer key questions about its sales practices.
During a hearing, Sen. Nellie Pou (D-Passaic) led more than 90 minutes of questioning of the Canadian-based FieldTurf’s CEO, Eric Daliere, focusing on why company officials did not notify all customers of problems with its turf after they became apparent to executives.
“If it was clear that it happened to enough customers throughout the country, early enough, why weren’t actions, the appropriate actions taken?” said Pou, the chairwoman of the Senate Commerce Committee.
Daliere offered a spirited defense of the company, noting that nearly all of the fields in question in New Jersey made it through their eight-year warranty period and emphasizing that the problems with its Duraspine turf did not create a safety hazard for those who used the field.

THE RECORD
The tiny specks of black rubber burrow their way into everything.
Keith Verkem finds them embedded in his carpet. In his car mats. Even chewed by his dog.
The shredded bits of used car and truck tires — called crumb rubber — routinely infest his Glen Rock home. They are carried in by his 13-year-old son, Zachary, after soccer games on artificial turf. They are used as infill on nearly all synthetic fields in the country.
And he wonders just how safe those little pellets are.
“My son comes home and takes off his cleats, and now I have piles of crumb rubber in my house,” Verkem said. “They do get everywhere.”
The large majority of studies have found minimal to no health risks from crumb rubber after testing turf fields, including analyses conducted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the University of California at Berkeley.
