Paramus NJ, This was a big week for Bergen County hospital news first New Bridge CEO Deborah Visconi, Associate Director of VA New Jersey Health Care System John Griffith, announced that New Bridge Medical Center has been designated a “Veterans Choice” facility by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This is a big day for Bergen County Veterans who as a result of this agreement, veterans will be able to receive procedures and treatment at New Bridge Medical Center that would otherwise require travel to the VA’s East Orange campus. It was well attended by local politico’s including Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco.
Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin , “Under President Trump’s leadership, VA is engaged in the largest transformation and modernization effort in decades. As part of this effort, the department is tackling head-on issues that have lingered for years, including accountability, whistleblower protection, improving transparency and customer service for Veterans and expanding suicide prevention and mental health care services.
As outlined in tonight’s address, VA will have another groundbreaking year in expanding and improving our services for Veterans, particularly when it comes giving them more choices over their health care decisions, and improving yet again on the timeliness of our decisions on Veterans’ benefits.”
Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco also joined Valley Health System to celebrate the opening and to help cut the ribbon of their new medical fitness center, Valley Health Lifestyles, in Mahwah. Ridgewood NJ, The Valley Hospital, an acute care, not-for-profit hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey expanded its use of Twiage, a mobile app that lets first responders instantly communicate with the emergency room.
After an initial pilot phase, Valley has expanded the use of Twiage to 12 local EMS services in Bergen County, NJ, and Rockland County, NY.
The 451-bed hospital, which serves the northern New Jersey area, began using Twiage last year. During the initial phase, hospital teams found that Twiage helps emergency department providers better prepare for incoming patients by having advanced notice of their care needs and estimated time of arrival. It also helps reduce ambulance turnover time, getting them back on the road faster.
“Using Twiage, we have been able to get better notification from our EMS providers about who they are bringing in, what those patients likely need, and when a patient will arrive,” says Caitlin Burke, Emergency Department Clinical Supervisor at The Valley Hospital. “It puts us one step ahead in terms of preparedness and patient care.”
Twiage, a HIPAA-compliant prehospital communication platform that has received innovation awards from the American Medical Association and American Heart Association, can be used to share information such as patient vital signs, symptoms and demographic information via secured photos, videos, voice memo and texts between EMTs, doctors, and nurses. The platform offers emergency department staff real-time situational awareness with live patient data and updates, and GPS-tracking of incoming ambulances.
“Twiage offers us an operational advantage,” says Lafe Bush, EMS Director, Valley EMS. “We started small when we launched it, but the technology is working so well that we are expanding its use to all EMS providers who serve this hospital.”
“We are really excited to be using the Twiage app,” says Milton Kohlmann, Chief of Paramus EMS. “It helps us give some advanced notice to the hospital about what we are dealing with out in the field and when we’ll get that patient to them. If it saves them time and helps them prepare for incoming patients, it’s going to lead to better patient care and make our jobs easier!”
Initially designed to help hospitals more efficiently manage resources for patients who have experienced a stroke, heart attack, sepsis, or trauma, Twiage allows EMS and hospital-based providers to better communicate and share data about all patients, which means a more timely response and better use of resources.
“I believe this program can be of great benefit to achieve our duties as Emergency Medical Technicians,” commented Murray Yang, Captain, Ridgewood EMS previously. “Every second matters in achieving a positive outcome for a patient who’s in need of emergency medical care.”
The current participating EMS agencies include Fair Lawn VAC, Franklin Lakes VAC, Hatzolah EMS, Mahwah EMS, Midland Park Ambulance, NJ Mobile HealthCare, Oakland FAS, Paramus EMS, Pearl River Ambulance, Ramsey Ambulance, Ridgewood Emergency Services, Valley EMS and Wyckoff VAC.

Twelve health care companies have expressed interest in taking over Bergen Regional Medical Center, including an overture from a coalition of local hospitals and a long-term-care facility.
County officials said the health care entities responded to a “request for qualifications” from those who might be interested in managing the county-owned, 1,000-bed hospital when the contract of its current for-profit operator expires next year.

The photograph’s caption indicates it was taken during a fundraising event for The Valley Hospital Foundation. Councilwoman Hauck was apparently an attendee at said event (whether by personal invitation or self registration is unknown).
You will no doubt recall that Councilwoman Hauck was one of two individuals who represented Village of Ridgewood taxpayers during mediation sessions held with respect to The Valley Hospital’s “Renewal” project. The other was Councilwoman Susan Knudsen.
In light of her past role as a mediator representing Village Taxpayers, the staff of The Ridgewood Blog questions the appropriateness of Councilwoman Hauck posing with Mr. Kozaitis and Ms. Meyers at the noted venue.

The Valley Health System of Ridgewood has expanded its Paramus footprint with a 10-year lease for 73,978 square feet at the Mack-Cali Centre III in Paramus.
The Mack-Cali property has two towers joined by a seven-story atrium with an on-site café with outdoor seating.
Valley spokeswoman Megan Fraser told NJBIZ “The site is close to the hospital’s Paramus campus, which includes a cancer center and same day surgery center.”
She said it’s also near a 15-acre property that Valley acquired last year.
“As more and more physicians choose to become a part of the system’s Valley Medical Group, we need to offer easy-to-access, beautiful office space for our doctor and their patients,” Frazer said. “In addition, to continue to positively impact the health of the population we serve, we envision developing new clinical and preventive medicine and wellness programs at that site in years to come.”

The Valley Health System is partnering with the Mount Sinai Health System in New York, which could prove a major advantage for the Ridgewood-based organization as it looks to recruit physicians and enhance its research, officials said Thursday.
A Mount Sinai associate dean will be appointed in January to oversee the development of initiatives for clinical services, research and staff education programs at both institutions, said Audrey Meyers, president and CEO of the Valley Health System, which includes the 451-bed Valley Hospital, Valley Home Care and Valley Medical Group.
More stand-alone hospitals are merging with larger systems as health care delivery and reimbursement change radically under the Affordable Care Act. But Meyers stressed that “both organizations will remain independent.”
The new partnership “is strictly an academic affiliation,” Meyers said.
