Teaneck NJ, on Friday, the U.S. Department of Education confirmed the initiation of a federal civil rights investigation into Teaneck schools, making it the third educational institution in New Jersey to undergo such scrutiny since the Hamas attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Rutgers University was added to the list on Dec. 12, and the Newark School District on Dec. 21. Nationwide, 44 institutions, including Brown University in Rhode Island most recently on Tuesday, are currently under investigation since the mentioned attacks. Teaneck School District was included on Jan. 5 in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights list for open Title VI Shared Ancestry Investigations, encompassing both institutions of higher education and K-12 schools. The investigation stems from the controversy surrounding a high school student walkout in support of Palestine on Nov. 29, 2023, and subsequent handling by School Superintendent Andre Spencer and the Board of Education’s management of public speakers addressing the topic at its meetings.
