Ridgewood NJ, In a joint decision made this week, the Ridgewood Fourth of July Committee and the Village of Ridgewood announced that they will cancel the 110th annual Fourth of July Parade and the evening entertainment and fireworks display due to COVID-19 health concerns.
The committee made the difficult decision after considering the many aspects of planning, fundraising, staffing, and executing the events amid the public health concerns and economic uncertainty of the next few months.

Trenton NJ, The New Jersey Supreme Court on Friday issued an omnibus order resuming the operations of some courts and extending the deadline for other court sessions and activities.
The order extends to May 31 the suspension of jury trials, landlord/tenant trials and grand jury proceedings.

MIT Researchers Publish Design for $100 Ventilator

Ridgewood NJ, according Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security , hospitals across the United States, and around the world, face the prospect of a shortage of life-saving ventilators in the coming days or weeks, if they are not already affected. The US government recently invoked the Defense Production Act in an effort to speed production and delivery of ventilator units by General Motors, but a number of other companies and organizations are actively pursuing alternative sources and products to mitigate the shortfall. Elon Musk announced yesterday that his company Tesla purchased 1,200 surplus ventilators from China, which will be distributed free of charge to hospitals in need. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology revived a project from several years ago to develop a makeshift ventilator using “ambu” resuscitation bags, widely available at hospitals around the world. The team intends to share its design instructions free of charge, which will allow others to construct their own unit, using US$400-500 in supplies. The units are not currently FDA-approved, but the team hopes to obtain approval in the future. Employees at 2 General Electric facilities in Massachusetts reportedly staged protests to demand that they be able to manufacture ventilators. The facilities, originally designed to produce aircraft jet engines, are currently sitting idle, and the workers want those facilities to be converted to manufacture ventilators. The protests follow an announcement by GE that it will lay off 10% of its “domestic aviation workforce” as well as “temporary” layoffs for maintenance personnel in an attempt to save the company money. Additionally, several other companies announced that they would begin producing a “simplified version of GE Healthcare’s” ventilators.

Ridgewood NJ, The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued a national emergency declaration to provide hours-of-service regulatory relief to commercial vehicle drivers transporting emergency relief in response to the nationwide coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. This declaration is the first time FMCSA has issued nation-wide relief and follows President Trump issuing of a national emergency declaration in response to the virus.

Upper Saddle River NJ, A Bergen County man was arrested today for defrauding lenders and corporations of millions of dollars by impersonating two bank executives interested in funding syndicated loans for global companies, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.
Matthew O’Callaghan, 43, of Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, is charged by indictment with five counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering. He is scheduled to appear this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Edward S. Kiel in Newark federal court.

Glen Rock NJ, a new proposal to unite the borough’s middle and high schools under one principal and add half a dozen other administrators .The plan, which would take effect at the beginning of the next school year, would appoint one person to lead grades 6 through 12 and approve the hire of up to five content-area supervisors during the next two years.
School officials say they could fund the extra staff within the state’s 2% school tax levy cap, which keeps districts from raising property taxes without seeking voter approval via a referendum or ballot question. The proposal was promoted as budget neutral.
The proposal has been met with resistance by some parents, teachers and former officials who said the district is barreling toward restructuring without considering the consequences.
