The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced a comprehensive, $430 million investment in the 116-year-old PATH system to upgrade stations, tracks, and other critical equipment. The two-year PATH Forward program focuses on improving reliability and modernizing stations on the fifth-busiest rapid transit system in the United States.
Ridgewood NJ, NJ TRANSIT has been awarded a $1.6 million grant from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) for the implementation of Artificial Intelligence-based systems designed to improve safety at light rail grade crossings. NJ TRANSIT will work with the Rutgers University Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) on the research and development of these systems. The data collected will provide critical information to help reduce pedestrian and vehicle strikes and serve as a foundation for community-driven safety improvement solutions.
New York NY, Governor Kathy Hochul, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced a new agreement to support the $10 billion replacement and expansion of the 73-year-old Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. Recognizing the importance and catalytic potential of the project, the city has committed 40 years of tax revenue — expected to help the Port Authority raise an estimated total of up to $2 billion, 20 percent of the project cost — from three potential new commercial developments on three sites, two of which will be positioned atop the new bus terminal and the third to be built at a nearby site owned by the Port Authority and private owners, subject to market demand. This deal brings the vision of a reimagined bus terminal one step closer to reality.

Linden NJ, on February 6, 2024, Officer Nikolas DePasquale and Officer Kevin O’Brien were on uniformed train patrol. They were patrolling an NJ TRANSIT train and disembarked at Linden Station around 4:50 pm. Immediately after their arrival at Linden, a passing commuter reported seeing a woman down at the station. The officers rushed to the area of concern and noticed an unresponsive woman. She was lying face down on the stairs. The officers checked for breathing and a pulse. Neither were detected.

Fort Lee NJ, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced it recovered more than $25 million from toll evaders in 2023, up 14 percent from the previous year. In addition to sharing toll evasion information with regional partners, the Port Authority also enhanced toll enforcement efforts with increased targeted patrols, stream lined and improved internal data collection, and leveraged various types of license plate reader systems across a spectrum of roadway infrastructure and police technology to catch evaders. The agency also identified 10 repeat toll evaders including one from Hackensack, Englewood, Teaneck and Lodi against whom the largest default judgments were awarded in 2023.
