Ridgewood NJ,The Women’s March has been harshly criticized for wishing a happy birthday to a fugitive and terrorist Joanne Chesimard who was convicted in the shooting death of a New Jersey State Police trooper 44 years ago.
In a tweet that read “Happy birthday to the revolutionary #AssataShakur! above an illustration of a her.Assata Shakur is one of the many aliases of Joanne Deborah Chesimard.
Chesimard a former member of what authorities describe as a “revolutionary extremist organization” known as the Black Liberation Army. She is on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list.
Chesimard was convicted of the execution-style killing State Police Trooper Werner Foerster after a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike on May 2, 1973. One accomplice was killed in a shoot-out with police.
So where in your county do property taxes hurt the most?
Last month, we showed you which towns in New Jersey had the highest property tax burdens, which is to say, those where the average property tax bill takes up the biggest share of median household income.
Here, we pulled out the top towns from each of New Jersey’s 21 counties.
New Jersey has the nation’s highest property taxes, but it’s much worse in some parts of the state than others. For example, Cumberland’s pain index is far lower than other counties. Top towns in eight counties did not crack our top 30 list for property tax pain.
Some of the state’s 565 municipalities were excluded from our analysis, as the median income margin of error was too high because of the American Community Survey’s small sample size.
A lot more research should be done to figure out why Americans have such a propensity to abuse drugs. In most countries, people have access to prescription drugs without needing a prescription. I was recently in Mexico and you can walk into any drug store and buy oxy and Percocet easily. Yet, Mexico is not facing an epidemic like we are. The problem here is and always has been a demand problem, not a supply problem. Why is that? Is life so terrible here that we need to numb ourselves? Or have we been coddled to the point of ignoring the notion of personal responsibilit?. How many bulimics are there in the third world?

Ramsey NJ, Ramsey Police, Fire , EMS, Rescue Squad and OEM personnel rushed to 62 Mardis Avenue, Ramsey on Saturday afternoon, 07/15, in response to a 911 telephone call reporting an adult male unconscious in the home’s driveway after being stung multiple times by a swarm of bees. It was several minutes before Ramsey PD and FD members could advance to the driveway area and remove him to a waiting ambulance. Multiple ambulances were subsequently called to the scene after at least two (2) other neighborhood residents were stung. A beekeeper was called to address the issue, but the area remained off limits to pedestrians for approximately three (3) hours until the bees calmed down. Allendale PD and EMS assisted at the scene, as did an ambulance from The Valley Hospital. A uniformed Ramsey PD officer was also among those stung; he was observed entering a ambulance for examination and treatment.
Ramsey NJ ,A motorcyclist was airlifted to a trauma center following a Saturday afternoon crash on Route 17 southbound near North Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey. Mahwah EMS, Mahwah Police, and Upper Saddle River Police assisted at the scene. Two (2) travel lanes and the right shoulder of Route 17 southbound near the crash scene were closed for an accident investigation. A field sobriety test was observed being administered to an adult male who was apparently involved in the crash. A black colored, 4-door sedan with out of state license plates and heavy rear end damage was seen parked in a nearby gas station with police inspecting it.
Paramus NJ, Paramus Police has issued the following “Crime Alert”: Recently during the overnight hours several unlocked vehicles have been entered by unknown subjects and ransacked while parked in their driveways In the Paramus / Ridgewood area. Last night an unlocked vehicle was stolen from the South Paramus Road area. It is believed the owner left the key fob in the car. Please assist the Paramus Police by:
1. Lock your cars
2. Do not leave the key fob in the car
3. Report suspicious persons and cars immediately via 911
4. Do not leave valuables in your car.
Hackensack NJ, NJ mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus and Bergen County Executive James J.Tedesco Encourages Residents to Take Simple Precautions.
It’s time to take important steps to protect yourself and your family against West Nile Virus (WNV) infection and mosquito annoyance in general.
WNV is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, so it’s important to take steps to prevent getting mosquito bites and to clean or remove items on your property that can serve as mosquito breeding grounds.
Individuals can take a number of measures around the home to help eliminate mosquito-breeding areas, including:
• Dispose of cans, buckets, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar containers that hold water on your property.
• Properly dispose of discarded tires that can collect water. Stagnant water is where most mosquitoes breed.
• Drill drainage holes in the bottom of outdoor recycling containers.
• Clean clogged roof gutters every year, particularly if the leaves from surrounding trees tend to plug drains.
• Turn over plastic wading pools when not in use.
• Turn over wheelbarrows and don’t let water stagnate in birdbaths.
• Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish.
• Clean and chlorinate swimming pools not in use and remove any water that may collect on pool covers.
For stagnant pools of water, homeowners can buy Bti products at lawn and garden, outdoor supply, home improvement and other stores. This naturally occurring bacteria kills mosquito larva, but is safe for people, pets, aquatic life and plants.
Additionally, these simple precautions can prevent mosquito bites, particularly for people who are most at risk:
• Make sure screens fit tightly over doors and windows to keep mosquitoes out of homes.
• Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks when outdoors, particularly when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, or in areas known for having large numbers of mosquitoes.
• When possible, reduce outdoor exposure at dawn and dusk during peak mosquito periods, usually April through October.
• Use insect repellants according to the manufacturer’s instructions. An effective repellant will contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Consult with a pediatrician or family physician if you have questions about the use of repellent on children, as repellant is not recommended for children under the age of two months.
WNV is an arboviral disease which people can acquire through the bite of a mosquito that has fed on an infected bird. WNV is not directly transmitted from birds to humans. About one in 150 persons, or less than 1 percent of those infected with West Nile virus will develop a more severe form of the disease. Symptoms of more serious illness include severe headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis.
The elderly are at higher risk of more severe disease. Bergen County’s WNV surveillance, control, and prevention activities involve the coordinated efforts of a number of federal, state and local agencies. These include DHSS, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State Mosquito Control Commission, the Rutgers Center for Vector Biology, local and Bergen County Health Departments, and of course our Bergen County Department of Public Works Division of Mosquito Control.

The demand for organ transplantation has rapidly increased all over the world during the past decade due to the increased incidence of vital organ failure, the rising success and greater improvement in posttransplant outcome. However, the unavailability of adequate organs for transplantation to meet the existing demand has resulted in major organ shortage crises.
According to Assemblymen Robert Auth , “It took three years but I can proudly say that we did it! It all started during my time at the Department of Motor Vehicles. I noticed that people who wanted to become organ donors and change their licenses to reflect their new status had to pay an additional fee to do so; and I knew that was wrong. As soon as I became your Assemblyman I worked to change this, and today the Governor signs it into law.”
I am astonished that I live in a state with people who would think it was OK to charge some more for a drivers license who is willing to be an organ donor ( https://legiscan.com/NJ/text/A374/201 ) and Trenton wonders why some many people continue to more out of the state to far greener pastures .
Glen Rock NJ, The drivers of both vehicles involved in a Wednesday afternoon, 07/12, collision at the intersection of Park and South Maple Avenues in Glen Rock escaped injury. A toddler who was strapped into a rear seat mounted child restraint device in one of the vehicles was also unharmed. A tow truck removed both wrecks from the scene. Glen Rock PD handled the investigation
Ho Ho Kus NJ, A helicopter from the NJ State Police Aviation Bureau visited the Ho-Ho-Kus PD Junior Police Academy at the Ho-Ho-Kus School, 70 Lloyd Road, Ho-Ho-Kus on Tuesday afternoon, 07/11. Ho-Ho-Kus FD and EMS personnel stood by at the landing zone during the helicopter’s landing and take off.
Fair Lawn NJ, The Fair Lawn Heavy Rescue Squad used the “Jaws of Life” to free a woman who was trapped in her 4-door sedan after it collided with a work van at the intersection of Hemlock Avenue and Maple Avenue in Fair Lawn on Tuesday morning, 07/11. The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries. A second victim, a front seat passenger in the work van, also left the scene in an ambulance. He too sustained what appeared to have been non life threatening injuries. Fair Lawn PD and FD also responded along with mutual aid ambulances from three (3) separate EMS agencies. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by tow trucks.

More and more Americans are spending their golden years on the job.
Almost 19 percent of people 65 or older were working at least part-time in the second quarter of 2017, according to the U.S. jobs report released on Friday. The age group’s employment/population ratio hasn’t been higher in 55 years, before American retirees won better health care and Social Security benefits starting in the late 1960s.
And the trend looks likely to continue. Millennials, prepare yourselves. Better yet, consider this and this, so you have a choice in the matter when your time comes.
Lawyers argued Monday over whether a former state judge who handled affordable housing cases should have at least one of his rulings overturned because of his relationship with a developer.
In Trenton, a lawyer for South Brunswick Township squared off against a half-dozen others representing developers and affordable-housing advocates. The township is seeking to have affordable housing rulings made by now-retired Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Douglas Wolfson vacated because of what it alleges is the appearance of a conflict of interest: Wolfson’s acceptance of vacations from, and current representation of, Edgewood Properties.
While on the bench, Wolfson handled litigation involving the township, but not Edgewood Properties, according to documents. And Wolfson recused from cases that came before him involving Edgewood.
Nevertheless, Wolfson for years has had personal and professional ties to Edgewood, and South Brunswick claims Wolfson’s decisions in other affordable housing cases could work in favor of Edgewood or its primary owner, Jack Morris, even though he has no projects pending in the township.
Coffee drinkers live longer, according to two large-scale studies released Monday that add to extensive research indicating coffee consumption is associated with better health.
The studies examined the health histories of hundreds of thousands of people who were tracked over many years. They found that coffee-drinking reduced the risk of various diseases among people from several ethnicities, and this effect was seen in drinkers of regular or decaffeinated coffee. And the more coffee consumed, the greater the benefit.
