Ridgewood Board of Education Moves to Add 3 New Holidays to the Calendar

Ridgewood NJ, at last nights Ridgewood Board of Education meeting , Superintendent Dr. Daniel Fishbein recommended three new holidays.

Eid
Diwali
Lunar New Year

On Monday Dr. Fishbein gave a presentation on the holiday calendar survey after providing background on the process. An overview of the survey results was shared, followed by three calendar examples which included Eid, Diwali, and Lunar New Year. After review and discussion, the Board recommended moving these calendars for review by the Calendar Committee. Click here to view the presentation.

Ridgewood NJ, in September of 2007 the Ridgewood Blog broke the story that , “a letter from the BOE President and Interim Superintendent that discusses what they found in the Orchard School soil. It’s not good. They have scheduled a mtg tomorrow night at BF middle school for the public. Also, this morning they fenced off the entire Orchard School field. No one is allowed on it. They may be finally owning up to what I always thought was a tainted situation that no one wanted to deal with.”

Ridgewood NJ, according to Professional Sports Field Services, “Flood water can destroy the performance of a turf athletic field in a single event. Not that will occur everytime, but the potential is always there.

Thorough and proper planning for the site would have prevented a flood event in the first place. If a flood plane is the chosen site to install a turf field, then some form of mitigation or divergence would be appropriate if allowed by regulating agencies. If not, relocating the field, using natural grass, or some other alternative would be wise. Of course if you are reading this article, then it’s too late for the planning part isn’t it?”

New Jersey Public Schools Ranked No. 2 In the Nation

Ridgewood NJ,  A new study ranked New Jersey’s public school system No. 2 in the country. WalletHub released 2019’s States with the Best & Worst School Systems .

The study focuses on performance, funding, safety, class size and instructor credentials.

Researchers compared the 50 states plus the District of Columbia. New Jersey ranked No. 2 in highest reading test scores and lowest drop out rate and No. 3 in highest math test scores and lowest pupil to teacher ratio. Delaware ranked No. 12 overall, No. 2 in lowest bullying incidents and tied for 4th in highest median ACT score.

Pennsylvania public schools ranked 27th overall and No. 5 in lowest percentage of threatened or injured high school students. Massachusetts was ranked No. 1 and Connecticut was ranked No. 3 overall.

Jonathan Holloway Named 21st President of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

New Brunswick NJ, Jonathan Holloway, provost of Northwestern University and an eminent historian, has been appointed the 21st president of Rutgers, The State University.

The Rutgers Board of Governors, with the advice and consent of the Rutgers Board of Trustees, today approved Holloway’s appointment at a joint meeting of the two boards. The Board of Governors also appointed Holloway as a University Professor and Distinguished Professor.

Ridgewood Friends of Music holds its first annual Emerging Composers Contest

Ridgewood NJ, In 2019 the Ridgewood Friends of Music held its first annual Emerging Composers Contest. There were five categories: Elementary School, Middle School, High School, College, and Adult. Composers were asked to submit an original piece of any genre, style, and length, and scored for any combination of instruments and/or voices. Submissions were received for the middle and high school categories and were judged by local, professional composers and music teachers Kenny Brescia, Jay Friedman, Lisa Plasse, and Joseph Turrin.

Nice, now every pissed off teen (is there any other kind?) will be able to disclose their frustrations to a computer system. To be carefully cataloged and stored, forever.

Next, school councilors who don’t want to be accused of missing warning signs would recommend visiting a shrink or a candy man to discuss treatment.

Before you know it, your boy or girl is on 3 meds before even stepping a foot in college! Everyone making $. The schools get more Budget, the shrinks and Pharma sell candy, the politicians get more support from school unions and drug manufacturers.

Everyone except your child that is. The teen is a nervous wreck for life.

“I want to vote on the budget. It has a huge impact on my life. The grand plans for the library and high school are proof that we need fiscal oversight. It is my money.

I lived in Ridgewood before and after having children in the schools. I have downsized but I regret staying. The village has become nothing but a wish list for developers and short term residents.

Young buyers cannot afford and do not want big houses. Homes over $1 million are not moving. After renovations by homeowners many of these homes are still selling for less that what they were bought for 15-20 years ago. Realtors (who make a good living off us) should be honest about this. They will list a home and then push for never ending price cuts. They get paid either way.

Many high end homeowners have had reevaluations to lower their taxes. When the village has it’s next town-wide tax reevaluation we will all pay for the decline in high-end home values. The village expense pie will be divided and the under $1 million taxes will go up. It’s not “just the cost of a Starbucks every day”.”
