But for teachers, it’s a chance to gather in Atlantic City for seminars and professional development, and this year, it’s taking on a more political tone as Sean Spiller, the president of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), campaigns for the state’s top office.

Many NJ School Districts and Municipalities Fail to Comply with Requirement to submit Current Union Contracts to the Public Employment Relations Commission

Ridgewood NJ, a review by the Office of the State Comptroller finds a majority of school districts including Ridgewood and more than one in four municipalities have failed to comply with a requirement to submit current union contracts to the New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission (PERC). The widespread—and growing—noncompliance undermines transparency, according to the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC) review, released today.

New Grants Focus on School District Regionalization in New Jersey

Trenton NJ, the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Division of Local Government Services (DLGS) has announced the awarding of School Regionalization Efficiency Program (SREP) grants to five school districts. These grants are intended to offset the costs associated with conducting feasibility studies that explore the potential advantages of school district regionalization or consolidation. By merging school districts or implementing shared services agreements, there is potential for cost savings and other efficiencies that could benefit both students and taxpayers. The grant program was established by P.L.2021, c.402, which was signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy in January 2022.

Hackensack Teacher Files Lawsuit Alleging Pregnancy Discrimination

State Revokes Former Tenafly Teachers Teaching Certificate After Assault with a Hammer Conviction

Tenafly NJ, Last month, the teaching certificate of Christopher R. Icochea was revoked due to his involvement in violent acts in Bergen County a year prior. According to the June 2024 Order of Revocation from the state, the State Board of Examiners made this decision on May 23, 2024, following Icochea’s guilty plea to aggravated assault in June 2023. The revocation became final on June 27, 2024.

Only 12% of NJEA’s Highest-In-The-Nation Dues Are Reinvested at the Local Level

Ridgewood NJ, the Sunlight Policy Center of New Jersey released their latest report today, entitled The NJEA vs. Local Unions: The Local Unions Make and the NJEA Takes.  The report examines the relationship between the statewide New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) and the hundreds of affiliated local unions around the Garden State and finds that only 12 percent of New Jersey teachers’ dues return home.

Westwood Board of Education Bans Video Recordings on School Premises
