NJ TRANSIT OUTLINES WINTER STORM SERVICE SCHEDULE FOR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5
February 4, 2014
NEWARK, NJ — Due to the anticipated impact from the approaching, powerful winter weather system, NJ TRANSIT has adjusted its service schedule for Wednesday, February 5. All customers are strongly advised to check njtransit.com before traveling for up-to-the-minute service information before starting their trip
The weather system is expected to generate heavy snow and freezing rain late this evening and continuing into the morning hours. This will generate a major impact on tomorrow morning’s commute with the potential to continue throughout the entire service day. Should customers plan to travel during the morning peak period when conditions are expected to be at their worst, NJ TRANSIT specifically encourages that they build additional time into their travel plans, expect potentially lengthy service delays, and be safe.
The following service advisories are in effect for Wednesday, February 5:
Rail Service: On Wednesday, February 5, NJ TRANSIT will operate trains on a storm schedule on all rail lines except the Atlantic City Rail Line, which will operate a regular weekend schedule. Service levels on the storm schedule will match the enhanced holiday schedule normally implemented on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Presidents’ Day. Visit njtransit.com or click here to view the detailed storm schedule.
Bus Service: While every effort will be made to continue operating bus service systemwide on a regular weekday schedule on Wednesday, February 5, customers may experience delays, detours or service adjustments on certain routes in the event of significant snowfall or ice accumulation. Customers are advised to plan accordingly and allow additional travel time, as buses will be subject to local road conditions.
Light Rail Service: On Wednesday, February 5, NJ TRANSIT will operate regular weekday scheduled service on the RiverLINE as well as Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Newark Light Rail will operate on a modified weekday schedule with service every ten minutes during the morning peak period. All light rail customers should expect delays in service, particularly during the morning commute.
Access Link Paratransit Service: On Wednesday, February 5, Access Link service will be suspended statewide until 12 noon. In addition, all transfer trips will be cancelled statewide. Access Link customers may call 1-800-955-2321 for periodic weather updates.
In addition, NJ TRANSIT is reminding customers of the following:
Systemwide Cross-Honoring in Effect on Wednesday, February 5: To give customers additional travel options during winter weather conditions, NJ TRANSIT has implemented full systemwide cross-honoring on Wednesday, February 5, enabling customers to use their ticket or pass on an alternate travel mode—rail, light rail or bus—including private bus carriers.
Waiting Room Hours Extended Through Wednesday, February 5: Due to the impending storm, all NJ TRANSIT rail station buildings and waiting rooms will remain open, including evenings and overnight, through Wednesday, February 5.
NJ Transit scrambling to protect its logos after trademarks lapsed in error

NJ Transit is hurrying to register seven trademarks — including its well-known orange, magenta and blue bands — with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office because it failed to renew the marks before a 2012 deadline and a six-month grace period expired.
An official at the trademark office confirmed last week that one of NJ Transit’s most recognizable trademark slogans, “NJ TRANSIT The Way To Go,” accompanied by black and white bars, bands and lines, is among the marks canceled after lapsing for more than a year.
“They are applying [for a new registration], but nothing is registered,” spokesman Paul Fucito said.
This is not the first paperwork lapse at NJ Transit: Three years ago, the agency’s website, NJTransit.com, was shut down by its Web hosting company because the agency failed to pay its domain name fee. And while this instance is not as noticeable to the public and is not likely to result in the agency losing its logos, it shows a lack of attention to detail at the agency, experts said.

Wednesday’s drama wasn’t part of NJ Transit’s playbook.
Just days before Super Bowl, the agency tasked with transporting thousands of ticket-holding fans to the Super Bowl saw two trains break down, stranding more than 800 passengers, and problems with its website.
Train problems began at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday when a New York-bound train carrying 27 passengers stopped under the Hudson River as the result of a downed overhead wire and a loss of power, said NJ Transit Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. The passengers were trapped in the tube for several hours as temperatures dropped.

‘Mass Transit’ Super Bowl In New York And New Jersey Has Been Years In The Making
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — For all the consternation over whether Mother Nature may or may not visit in northern New Jersey for next weekend’s Super Bowl, another unpredictable force could determine whether the event turns into a transportation debacle: the football fan.
The $64,000 question, beyond whether Feb. 2 will bring another storm the likes of the one that dumped nearly a foot of snow Tuesday, will be whether the estimated few hundred thousand visitors to the area heed organizers’ advice and leave their cars at home or at their hotels.
If fans do decide to take mass transit, they will find plenty of options waiting. If they don’t, they will find out what New York metro area residents already know, that the slightest disruption to the traffic system, be it construction, an accident or the influx of more vehicles, can tip an already delicate balance into chaos. (Porter/Huffington Post)
NEWARK, NJ — In light of the current winter storm that is expected to impact the region today and tomorrow, NJ TRANSIT has announced an extension of full, systemwide cross-honoring through the end of the service day, Wednesday, January 22. In addition, NJ TRANSIT operations, customer service and police personnel continue to take steps toward minimizing delays and ensuring service reliability and safety. All customers are strongly advised to check njtransit.com before traveling for up-to-the-minute service information before starting their trip.
Systemwide Cross-Honoring Extended Through Wednesday, January 22: To give customers additional travel options during winter weather conditions, NJ TRANSIT will extend full systemwide cross-honoring through Wednesday, January 22, enabling customers to use their ticket or pass on an alternate travel mode—rail, light rail or bus—including private bus carriers.
For example, customers who normally take the bus from Rutherford to the Port Authority Bus Terminal may use their bus pass or ticket on the train from Rutherford to New York Penn Station. Similarly, customers who normally take the bus between Atlantic City and Lindenwold may use the Atlantic City Rail Line instead at no additional charge. Customers using their tickets or passes to travel to a destination other than the destination printed on their original ticket will be subject to the appropriate additional fare if applicable.
Waiting Room Hours Extended Through Monday, January 27: Due to the current winter storm and extreme cold weather conditions expected to follow, all NJ TRANSIT rail station buildings and waiting rooms will remain open, including evenings and overnight, through Monday, January 27.
Access Link Paratransit Service: On Tuesday, January 21, Access Link will cancel all new outbound trips as of 10 a.m. On Wednesday, January 22, Access Link service will be suspended statewide. Full service will resume on Thursday, January 23 as soon as road conditions permit.

Fight Breaks out on Northbound Bergen/Port Jervis Line Train
March 17,2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ , A New Jersey Transit train Bergen/ Port Jervis line was forced to make an unscheduled stop on Saturday after a large brawl broke out inside one of the rail cars, leading to the ejection of several passengers.
No details are available as to what sparked the fight, or weather the fight was or was not St.Patrick’s day parade related . The fight broke out shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday on a northbound Bergen/Port Jervis line train. NTJ had previously banned alcohol for the parade of Saturday.
NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. told the The Star-Ledger of Newark that the fight began about 10 minutes after the train departed from Secaucus , forcing the the train to make an unscheduled stop in East Rutherford, where authorities broke up the brawl.
Sixteen people were finally ordered off the train, while two were issued summons for disorderly conduct and one person was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The train resumed service after a 20 minutes delay. Bergen/ Port Jervis line also stop at Ridgewood Train Station.
NJT bans alcoholic beverages on on all trains for St Patrick’s Day
March 13,2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, On Saturday, March 16, alcoholic beverages will NOT be permitted on any train to and from New York/Hoboken. This policy will be strictly enforced. Beverages of any kind are prohibited at all times on board buses.
NJ Transit police arrested 16 people during St. Patrick’s Day last year, including two people who were charged with aggravated assault on two conductors. Most of the arrests were for disorderly conduct.
Reader says politicians and NJT should try commuting sometime before making infrastructure decisions.
I hope this person will be alright. It looks like the guy was walking home from the train. Last I checked day glow yellow suits are not really appropriate for business, so let’s cut him some slack about attire.
We are on track for a horrific accident at the intersection of Broad and Franklin now that the train station renovation forces commuters to cross at the underpass. There are no crossing signals. Cars coming through the underpass and making a right turn are not expecting people to be stepping off the curb right by the corner. More people are going to get hit. Maybe the politicians and NJT should try commuting sometime before making infrastructure decisions.
I am confident that nobody on the board at NJT eats their own cooking. The conditions at Penn are atrocious. Transferring at SEC is ridiculous in the mornings. And the station rebuild at RGWD is terrible. It is as if no part of that project was designed to improve the quality of commuting for non-ADA impacted people (99.999% of the people who use that station).
And yes, crossing at the corner of Franklin and Broad is about 10 times as dangerous as crossing Broad mid-block. There needs to be a full stop on green for right turns from Franklin to Broad, or at least better lighting on that corner. Good luck getting NJT to address it; they won’t even clear the snow from that corner, and evidently neither will Ridgewood.
Eventually you will see a traffic light on Franklin and Chestnut, too.
NJ Transit has made the commute from Ridgewood a nightmare
NJ Transit has made the commute from Ridgewood a nightmare. Express service pretty much cancelled — after a $40 million renovation just two years ago to build this big station, it is now no longer a key express stop per the schedule. Trains are so constantly overcroweded that there are fights (literally) over space to get on the trains. Emails, letters and calls go unanswered.
Now, we have large Advertisements for Empire Casino “decorating” the “RIDDGEWOOD” signs at this new station. I am all in favor of advertisements to reduce the financial strain on riders — but were these ad placements part of the drawings? I dont recall seeing them. Village officials never should have agreed to such a large expansion of the station and large advertisements for NY casinos without a committment from NJ Transit to maintain certain service levels. (BTW – why would a NJ based organization like NJ Transit agree to place large ads for a NY casino on its property when Atlantic City is suffering???) Hopefully this will serve as a warning to future Village leaders not to trust NJ Transit.
Ridgewood NJ, Village officials remain on the fence about several aspects of New Jersey Transit’s (NJT) proposal to sell advertising space at the Ridgewood train station.
New Jersey Transit is proposing the placement of advertisements on platforms and the pedestrian underpass at the Ridgewood train station. Council members and other residents left last week’s work session meeting with a better understanding of NJT’s plan; however, many were not yet convinced that the initial ideas presented by NJT representatives are in the village’s best interest.
In addition, some council members suggested that the transportation corporation, which operates the country’s largest statewide public transit system, must completely fulfill the obligations of the recent $40 million renovation before moving forward with the advertising project.
As of early this week, NJT and its advertising contractor, Titan Outdoor, had hopes of working with the village to sell and install advertising placards at the train station. Transit officials are targeting spots on the platforms and the station building as well as the walls of the pedestrian underpass. The ultimate goal for both NJT and the village is an increase in revenue, transportation officials said.
Ridgewood NJ, A conceptual plan to improve the pedestrian underpass at the Ridgewood train station has piqued interest among several council members, who last Wednesday expressed desire to meet with New Jersey Transit (NJT) officials and discuss the potential ideas.
NJT recently completed a $40 million renovation project at the station to make Ridgewood’s transit hub accessible to disabled passengers and more convenient for all riders. That project, however, did not include improvement work to the underpass.
In its current condition, the underground walkway shows deteriorated walls, exposed rebar and general disrepair. Though it is out of sight to many village residents, the passageway is an eyesore to those who use it.
