Ridgewood NJ , the Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 remind you that  according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than 200 home fires each year start with a Christmas tree. In these videos, NIST fire researchers demonstrate what could happen if a fire starts in a watered Christmas tree vs. a dry Christmas tree.

Every holiday season, hundreds of residential fires start with a Christmas tree. Above, you saw the NIST video that illustrates the dramatic difference between a fire started in a well-watered tree versus in a thirsty, neglected tree.

Reader says This town is on the path of no return

CBD high density housing

I agree with most of what you say but not voting for Aronsohn. I won’t vote at all. Now I have understood what RW politicians are made of, it is NJ after all. They can tear their pie anyway they want but I won’t support any of them. This town is on the path of no return. Whoever thinks that raising voice works is a classic naive. I really expected much more from Susan Knudsen but she turned out to be a huge disappointment.

3 amigos in action Ridgewood NJ

The present council is worse than the previous. The past council was open about how they wanted to destroy everything about the town that made it unique and charming. This council is devious and destructive. Watch them tear away at the islands around the train station next. And dig deep because parking meters will demand your coin from 8 a.m to 9 p.m. to fund an ugly , muggers paradise parking garage. I can just read the headlines now. Train riders robbed, injured, late at night coming home from NYC on train and getting their car from top floor of expensive garage. Expensive garage will have garbage strewn around and taxpayers will have to pay for the clean every day. Meanwhile the employee parking lot at Cottage Place is always empty, only a few cars parked there. What wonderful planning by the council. THE PAST COUNCIL KEPT TAXES DOWN. Not with this stupid council. Remember , never say never, I thought I would never vote for Aronsohn and gang, but I will next time. At least I will know what I am getting. Disappointment is too painful.

Josh Gottheimer voted NO on giving New Jersey families much needed tax cuts

Josh Gottheimer

December 23,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, reader asks , “So Josh Gottheimer’s big ‘tax cutting’ campaign pledge was that he would lower corporate tax rates.
This tax bill does exactly that, but Gottheimer did not vote for it? Was he opposed to the middle class tax cuts that were paired to his favored corporate tax cuts? ”

Gottheimer voted no on tax cuts ,these tax cuts will allow North Jersey families to keep more of their money and New Jersey businesses to invest more in the local economy.

During his election readers poked fun , “There is a Gottheimer poster wrapped around the bear by the Franklin Ave underpass that says ‘Lower taxes’

I am still confused about whether that is a legit poster or someone just being sarcastic.”

Reader says the ruling is not clear on whether 2018 taxes will be allowed to be deducted in 2017…

Also the ruling is not clear on whether 2018 taxes will be allowed to be deducted in 2017…

ONE INTERPRETATION:
https://www.millarlawoffices.com/warning-pre-paid-state-local-taxes-not-deductible-2017-due-2018/
Warning!!! Pre-paid State and Local Taxes are NOT DEDUCTIBLE in 2017 If they are due in 2018!
By of MillarLaw A Professional Corporation On Sunday, December 17, 2017

Assuming that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (“TCJA”) passes both Houses of Congress and is signed by the president, there will be monumental changes in the Internal Revenue Code on the individual and corporate tax levels.
One example is the limitation on the part of individuals to deduct state and local taxes (“SALT”). Prior to the TCJA an individual (including joint return filers) who itemized could deduct state and local taxes to the extent they exceeded to two percent (2%) of Adjusted Gross Income (“AGI”). Under the TCJA an individual is limited to a combined deduction of $5,000 ($10,000 per couple).
Tax advisers have been suggesting that individual taxpayers pre-pay their SALT liabilities for 2018 to overcome the limitation. However, the there is language in the TCJA anticipates and neutralizes that suggestion,
“…an individual may not claim an itemized deduction in 2017 on a pre-payment of income tax for a future taxable year in order to avoid the dollar limitation applicable for taxable years beginning after 2017.” (TCJA, p 558)
Therefore, if you may want to reconsider the suggestion to pre-pay your 2018 SALT liabilities.
Planning note: the TCJA is extremely complex and it requires a lot of careful analysis before meaningful planning steps can be recommended. Please have patience with us and other professionals as we all struggle through the legislation and work toward viable solutions.

ANOTHER OPINION:
https://www.360financialliteracy.org/Topics/Taxes/Credits-Deductions/If-I-prepay-next-year-s-taxes-this-year-can-I-deduct-them-this-year

If I prepay next year’s taxes this year, can I deduct them this year?
Probably. Generally speaking, taxes are deductible in the year you pay them.
Sometimes real estate taxes are prepaid. If you are the property owner, you can generally deduct prepaid real estate taxes in the year of the prepayment if (1) you are a cash basis taxpayer and (2) you don’t live in a jurisdiction where the taxing authority considers prepayment a “deposit.” Jurisdictions vary regarding how they treat prepaid tax. Be aware that taxes placed in escrow generally aren’t deductible until they are paid to the taxing authority.
*As of 12/15/2017, updates to come in 2018.

Real estate taxes are not always entirely deductible. If you are subject to AMT the deduction may be limited.
There is a good chance that if you can afford to pay Ridgewood real estate taxes, combined with sky high NJ income taxes, you may be subject to AM

Trump Tax Cut Got You Down ; why pay less when you can still pay more

taxes why pay less when you cans till pay more

December 23,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, in “A GUIDE TO PAYING HIGHER TAXES FOR PEOPLE UPSET BY THE TAX BREAKS” by Kevin Ryan, the author spells out how you can continue paying the old higher rates .

Ryan begins , “Are you upset about the tax cuts? Have no fear! I’ve written this handy guide for people who’d like to continue paying higher taxes.”

He reminds taxpayers ,  “It’s not as simple as sending the government more money than your tax return says you owe. Unfortunately, the IRS will send your overpayment back to you as a refund (or apply it toward your next year taxes if you specify them to). ”

Then he gets into the options you have to pay more taxes .

However, there are options that you can select when filing your taxes that will result in you paying more money:

• Elect to itemize deductions even if the standard deduction would be greater.

• Elect to take the standard deduction if itemizing would lower your taxes.

• File as “Married Filing Separately” instead of filing a joint return will usually result in higher taxes owed.

• Most nonrefundable credits are wholly optional, and you are not required to take them if you do not want to.

• You have the option to round each entry line item on your tax form to the nearest dollar, or to fill in exact amounts. Do it both ways and submit the result that comes out with higher taxes.

• You can also make a voluntary contribution to the US government by sending a separate payment to the Treasury via the Bureau of the Fiscal Service along with a note authorizing them to use it to “reduce the debt held by the public”. Be careful, though, such contributions are tax deductible as a charitable donation. Luckily you don’t have to take the deduction.

• And businesses have been doing their part to mitigate the devastating impact of Trump’s corporate tax cut, with some of the biggest companies in America announcing that they will voluntarily give the savings to their workers in the form of higher wages and/or bonuses. Now all that’s needed are for workers to give these bonuses back to the government, and they could basically cancel out the effects of Trump’s tax cuts!

If enough people choose to pay more than they owe and to give their bonuses and higher wages back to the government, they can help prevent or minimize the devastation and deaths that Democrats predict these tax cuts will cause. Happily, half of all Americans say they disapprove of the new tax cuts, so there will be millions of people lining up to give the government their money back!

Reader accuses Councilmember of not being Upfront with Their Views on Schedler

Save Our Schedler Members & Friends at the Schedler House

file photo by Boyd Loving

Hache did not tell tell the truth. After he was voted in , he said he walked Schedler and it would not be appropriate for a sports field. Knudsen and Sedon also said that. Because they want the votes of the sports people they are changing, thinking because the field is 50 instead of ninety feet they can please everyone. Well, eagles have been seen their, Knudsen admits that. They leave with human activity, and their chances for survival are slim when they leave their nests. Google bald eagle habitats. Plus the trees themselves and other wildlife. Natural areas at a minimum here already.
And Hache, Sedon and Knudsen will win next election time too, because most people will be satisfied.

Many New Jersey Towns Allowing Prepayment of Property Taxes

Ridgewood_-Village_Hall_theridgewoodblog

December 22,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Jersey City NJ, Jersey City today said it will allow residents to prepay their entire 2018 estimated tax bills this year if they want to try to take advantage of a deduction the bill has curtailed.

Property taxes are now entirely deductible, but starting next year taxpayers will only be able to deduct up to $10,000. Residents in high-tax states like New Jersey have been flooding local tax collectors with calls asking to prepay their taxes this year so they can attempt to deduct them when they file their 2017 tax returns in April.

Jersey City had initially said it would cap prepayments of next year’s bill to two quarters , a common limit other New Jersey municipalities have , but Mayor Steve Fulop, a Democrat, said he decided today to allow residents to pay all four quarters this year.

Former Ridgewood Village Manager Misstatement of Facts on Park Mobile

Roberta Sonenfeld

pictured 31 page OPRA

December 22,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, in an article posted by the Bergen record last week former Village manager Roberta Sonefeld boldly stated , “The misinformation currently circulating about the Parkmobile contract is curious at best,” Sonenfeld said, adding, “No village money goes to Parkmobile.”https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/bergen/ridgewood/2017/12/15/ridgewood-terminates-contract-parking-claims-no-knowledge-fees/950800001/

Despite Ms. Sonenfeld’s contention that “No village money goes to Parkmobile,” the attached document clearly indicates that between May of 2015 and December of 2017, $155,821.60 of “money” generated by the Village of Ridgewood’s Parking Utility was paid to Parkmobile.

Reader says Roberta decided that she could take what was discussed and turn it in to a contract that is in direct violation with what the council had voted on

Village_Manager_Roberta_Sonenfeld_theridgewoodblog

There was no consensus, no vote, no amendment to the resolution following discussion about fees that Park mobile wanted to charge us. It was discussion at a work session and nothing was agreed to or decided upon. But big-ego Roberta decided that she could take what was discussed and turn it in to a contract that is in direct violation with what the council had voted on. There was also no discussion or vote to have the contract go for three years when the resolution was for two years. An amendment to the resolution would have to have been introduced and passed, but no, Roberta was larger than the law and did whatever the hell she wanted. You are aware, aren’t you, that she has been found GUILTY of an ethics violation by an independent group, the Local Finance Board? Consider the source when you read her lie-filled letter.
In addition, do not blame Heather Mailander for that resolution. She drafted it according to what the five elected officials voted on and it was signed before the March discussion at which Roberta decided to tell everyone that major fees were going to be coming. You should get your facts straight, but you are a Roberta supporter so obviously you come from the school in which facts are not needed in order to make strong statements.
