Philadelphia PA, this Halloween marked the 50th anniversary of the prestigious Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. Although not quite as large as the Head of the Charles, this regatta is still one of the big ones, attracting nearly 9,000 rowers and over 30,000 spectators. It was considered to be the world’s largest one day regatta, until it grew so large that it had to be separated into two days. Collegiate teams, elite teams, and masters teams race on Saturday, while highschool and club teams race on Sunday.

Ridgewood Crew Competes in one of the the World’s Largest Regattas

Boston MA, the Head of the Charles Regatta, also known as the world’s largest three-day regatta, attracted 619 clubs, 2,231 boats, thousands of spectators, and over 11,000 rowers this year. This regatta brings together a wide range of athletes with high school teams, collegiate teams, club teams, and even Olympians racing. Ridgewood Crew was incredibly lucky to have four of their boats accepted this year: the Women’s Youth Single, Men’s Youth Single, Women’s Youth Double, and Men’s Youth Double. These six athletes competed in events against some of the finest racers in the United States and Canada. In some of these events, our rowers were up against over 50 other boats.

Philadelphia PA, The Schuylkill Navy’s 94th Stotesbury Cup Regatta took place this past weekend as one of the first public events approved by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health as the City reopens. One hundred and thirty-one teams gathered at the Schuylkill River for what is now the largest high school rowing regatta in the world. Ridgewood sent 13 crews to compete against exceptionally fine crews from all parts of the United States.

West Windsor NJ,  Ridgewood Crew traveled to Mercer Lake to compete in the US Rowing Mid-Atlantic Youth Championship Regatta this weekend.  The crews competing at the Youth Nationals raced against some of the strongest rowing clubs and scholastic rowing programs of the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Ridgewood Crew WINS 7 MEDALS at Cities Championship Regatta!!

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Crew participated in the 2021 City Championship Regatta with 15 entries, surpassed only by Conestoga Crew Club with 16. The event, hosted by the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association, was held without the usual tents and crowds in order to keep all participants as safe as possible under the circumstances. Ten boats advanced to the finals and 7 boats earned medals, including 1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze.

Ridgewood Crew Out On The Schuykill For The Second Manny Flick

Ridgewood NJ,  on Sunday, April 18, the Ridgewood Crew team participated in the second Manny Flick of 2021. The Manny Flicks are a series of preliminary rowing races offered before the official regatta season begins. To give the crews time to size up the competition, local teams came up with a series for the rowers at the “flicks” on Philadelphia’s famous Schuylkill racecourse. The “flicks” are named after Manuel A. Flick, a father who organized the first series in the 1950s. 

Fifty-six clubs participated in this invitational regatta hosted by the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association. All teams were required to adhere to proper COVID-19 protocol to keep athletes, coaches, parents, the race administration, and the neighboring community safe. Spectators are prohibited from attending this year.

Ridgewood Crew Wins 16 Medals at the 2021 Ironman Regatta

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Crew team participated in the annual Ironman Erg Classic held 100% virtually and hosted by Don Bosco Prep High School in Ramsey on January 23, 2021. The event attracted 17 clubs. Ridgewood Crew had 44 entries. 

Ridgewood performed well, according to Head Coach Boris Roque-Alvarez, “This event was a great opportunity to all RC athletes and will help the team to keep motivated in a difficult season giving the challenges presented by COVID-19. We are proud of the whole team and we are looking forward to race in upcoming events.”

Ridgewood Crew Finishes With Three Gold Medals and Advances to Nationals!

Ridgewood NJ,  This weekend, Ridgewood Crew competed in the last of four races in the North Jersey Virtual Scrimmage Series. Ten clubs participated in the program, with 165 entries total. Ridgewood Crew had eleven athletes participate, resulting in three gold medals and one silver. 

The North Jersey Virtual Scrimmage Series was offered for the first time this year after the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. This Ridgewood Crew’s results this week were as follows:

Ridgewood Crew Wins Gold, Silver and Bronze in the North Jersey Virtual Scrimmage Series

Ridgewood NJ,  Just ahead of Ridgewood Schools going virtual on Friday, March 13, Ridgewood Crew (RC) distributed rowing machines known as “ergometers” to those rowers of the 2020 Crew Team, that did not have their own machines at home. Since then, RC Coaches have been issuing and tracking the practice and progress of the athletes virtually.

Despite most spring sports’ seasons being completely cancelled, the local rowing community has been participating in a dynamic series of virtual scrimmages where each athlete participates from their own home, competing for best time.

Ridgewood NJ, This weekend, Ridgewood Crew competed in what is known as America’s Favorite Regatta, The Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In its 49th year, this two-day event drew thousands of spectators to Fairmount Park and the 2.5-mile course.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, Ridgewood Crew team had the opportunity to send one boat to the Head Of The Charles Regatta this past weekend in Boston.  The Boys Youth 8+ was led by Head Coach Boris Roque-Alvarez and veteran coach Bob O’Connor. The average weight of this boat crew is 146 pounds, they raced big and heavier crews.  Additionally, the course presented challenges very different from their usual venues. This regatta is one of the largest Head Races Regatta in the World with rowers from many countries including Olympic Champions.
