This development aims to create a system that operates independently of its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, potentially making the platform more acceptable to US lawmakers who have expressed concerns and proposed banning the app. The project commenced before legislative efforts to force a sale of TikTok’s US operations gained momentum in Congress earlier this year. While this initiative could facilitate the eventual divestiture of TikTok’s US assets, the company has stated that it has no current plans to sell its US operations.

TikTok Ban Moves Forward, Mnuchin Assembles Investor Group

Washington DC, the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted 352-65 in favor of a bill that would ban TikTok in the United States unless its Chinese parent company, Bytedance, sells off its US operations within six months. While the bill’s fate in the Senate remains uncertain, President Joe Biden has indicated his willingness to sign it if it clears both chambers of Congress.

The bill was announced by the legislators last month amid rising concerns about cybersecurity risks associated with the social media platform raised by the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Village of Ridgewood Jumps into the TikTok Ban Debate

Ridgewood NJ, according to the Wall Street Journal ,one of the earliest public debates about blacklisting TikTok in the U.S. isn’t taking place in Washington. It is happening in South Dakota’s second-most populous city. The Rapid City council on Tuesday will consider a proposal to ban TikTok (TikTok has 1 billion monthly active users.) from city-owned devices and networks, and to prohibit city agencies from using the app. Championing the idea is a councilman—and potential mayoral candidate—who calls TikTok a security threat.

TikTok’s Chinese Parent Company ByteDance Reportedly Accessed US Journalists’ data

Ridgewood NJ, ByteDance employees accessed TikTok data for two US journalists and others connected to them. At least two of those employees were based in China and two were working from the US. The data was used during an investigation into internal leaks. TikTok has not indicated whether the data was accessed before or after the company started to route US user data through Oracle. Several senators are working on legislation that would ban TikTok in the US.

FCC Commissioner Accuses TikTok of being a Chinese Surveillance Tool

Ridgewood NJ, US FCC commissioner Brendan Carr has asked Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores. The video app is owned by Chinese company ByteDance. Carr claims that TikTok functions as a surveillance tool that harvests extensive amounts of personal and sensitive data from US citizens. TikTok says its data access approval process is overseen by a US-based security team and that data is only accessed on an as-needed basis under strict controls.
