Ridgewood YWCA to Host FREE Taekwondo Demonstration Class

Ridgewood NJ, Observe and try out YWCA Bergen County’s new youth taekwondo program at their free demonstration classes on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Demo classes will be held at 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood from 5:15 pm to 6:00 pm for children age 6 to 9 years and 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm for ages 10 to 14 years. Participants will learn patterns, sparring, and self-defense in addition to improving physical fitness and mental discipline. Open to all families. Parent waiver and onsite supervision required for participation in this demonstration class.

One of only two martial arts represented as an Olympic Sport, Taekwondo was founded in Korea and has gained huge popularity in recent years in the US. Translated, Taekwondo means “the art of kicking and punching” or “the art of unarmed combat”.
Instructor Dave Howell is a lifetime student of Taekwondo, attaining the Taekwondo 4th Dan rank in accordance with the Kukkiwon rules and regulations. He has been instructing children for over 14 years and has administered the promotion of more than 100 students to the level of Black Belt. In 2012, Howell coached a student to Gold place finish in their first International forms competition in Seoul, Korea.
YWCA Taekwondo classes run in 8-week sessions and are held at the YWCA’s 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood facility. Classes for children and youth ages 6 to 14 years are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 6:00 pm for ages 6 to 9 and 6:00 to 6:45 pm for ages 10 to 14. The Obama Administration Wants to Make Sure Non-Citizens Vote in the Upcoming Election

Several well-funded organizations — including the League of Women Voters and the NAACP — are fighting efforts to prevent non-citizens from voting illegally in the upcoming presidential election. And the United States Department of Justice, under the direction of Attorney General Loretta Lynch, is helping them.

On February 12, these groups filed a lawsuit in D.C. federal court seeking to reverse a recent decision by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC). The Commission’s decision allows Kansas and other states, including Arizona and Georgia, to enforce state laws ensuring that only citizens register to vote when they use a federally designed registration form. An initial hearing in the case is set for Monday afternoon, February 22.

Business-lobbying organization says brain drain makes it hard for state to attract cutting-edge companies that need younger, skilled employees

New Jersey loses a portion of its senior population every year to less-expensive — and less snowy — states like Florida and North Carolina. But a new study of outmigration trends issued by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association raises new alarms about the number of so-called millennials who have also been leaving the state.

Of all the age groups in New Jersey that experienced a net loss in population from 2007 to 2014, the highest rate was among people between the ages of 18 and 34, according to the business-lobbying organization.

That brain drain hurts the overall New Jersey economy and makes it harder for the state to attract the type of companies that rely on young, skilled workers, the association said.

The new data on millennials leaving New Jersey was included in NJBIA’s broader outmigration study, which concluded that the state had a net loss of 682,062 residents between 2005 and 2014. And from 2004 to 2013, New Jersey lost $18 billion in net adjusted gross income, the NJBIA said.

The organization blamed New Jersey’s high taxes and overregulation for that loss of wealth and residents, and it offered a list of recommendations that ranged from tax reform to better workforce development and making higher education more affordable as remedies.

BCIA financing for the Ridgewood Hudson Street Garage does not qualify as a rational decision

Ridgewood NJ, Critical issues remain before the BCIA can be engaged on this new, unknown plan. The village and residents have much hard work still to do. The November vote, and the mandate to borrow applied to a plan that is no longer is on the table.

This garage will be operate under different circumstances due to the county funding, the out of town commuting load will likely be higher than the village has detailed. Our outdated and antiquated traffic signals cannot handle traffic as it is. Has the village shown any financial information to residents for this funding? The village and county will be asking us to be investors in this multi-million dollar project and we would like more information on all aspects. The village still has a ways to go on the items it has promised. The residents need time to make a smart investment decision with our tax money on this new and unknown plan.

Even though the council hasn’t answered the question, I understand that the additional cost by going through the BCIA rather than using our own AAA credit rating (the best available and higher than the US Govt at one point) will cost the town an additional 1.5-2%.

Everyone who has likely shopped their mortgage around when buying their home in order to eliminate .5 point. This council, who likely did the same for their own home purchase, is apparently willing to throw away 3-4x that amount of our money rather than have a discussion about a more appropriate solution. We could then finance ourselves and have no input from a county authority that would expect something in return for the privilege of using their inferior cost of capital!

I’m not sure how that qualifies as a rational decision in anyone’s book.

Operation No Confidence : Ridgewood Village Hall, Tonight – 7:30pm

Dear Neighbor,

Here we are yet again at yet another important Village Council meeting, Tonight at 7:30pm at the Village Hall. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to not making VC meetings a must attend every few weeks.

But that’s just how it is. For now anyway. Until we can get some folks onto the council who we can trust will listen to us and do the right thing when it comes to our village. That day will come sooner than later but for now, we must remain engaged.

So, in case you didn’t know already, tomorrow is the night that the Village Council likely plans to vote on overriding itself and go to the County for a bond. This is without a parking garage proposal that fits within the footprint of the Hudson street lot. This is with us being on the hook for several  hundreds of thousands of dollars for the County bond, not to mention the likelihood of millions more for the building of a garage. This is against many of the the findings of the Maser Traffic Study from October 15th, which Councilwoman Knudsen and Councilman Sedon were unaware of until late December. I could go on and on…

The bottom line is that, inconvenient as it is, we must remain vigilant and protect Ridgewood, which means showing up and voicing our concerns.

Hoping to see you tomorrow night. And if you can’t make it, please email our Village Council and Village Manager to let them know that even considering voting to go to the County for a bond at this point is against the better interests of our village.

The walls of Ridgewood’s Village Hall are filled with artwork donated by residents, and the entire community is invited to celebrate.

The official launch of the Ridgewood Arts Council (RAC) and a ribbon-cutting celebration of the art installation of “Ridgewood Art at Village Hall” will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30.

“This is our flagship endeavor not only to put a stamp on the fact that the Ridgewood Arts Council is revived, but also to celebrate the breadth of artistic talent here in Ridgewood, past and present,” said Linda Bradley, the group’s chair.

Currently there are more than 80 pieces of fine art, photography and sculpture. It’s a permanent collection – artwork donated by Ridgewood residents and those with a Ridgewood connection. The collection of art started six months ago, and will continue to be accepted to cover the remaining areas at Village Hall.

“Mayor Aronsohn and I both campaigned with the promise to revive the Arts Council,” said Deputy Mayor Albert Pucciarelli. “The purpose is to pull together the wealth of artistic endeavors in the village under one volunteer organization that would promote art and artistic education.”

Pucciarelli believes that art has a humanizing effect and that residents in the New York metropolitan area are fortunate to live in the midst of so much wonderful art of all kinds.

Ridgewood NJ , U.S. Senator Cory Booker will deliver remarks addressing the theme, “We Shall Not Be Silent,” as The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee of Ridgewood and Glen Rock hosts its 34th annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King. The community is invited to attend this free program, which will take place on Monday, January 18 at the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton St., in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Senator Booker and The Rev. Joseph Ellwanger, Pastor Emeritus of Cross Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, will be guest speakers during an interfaith worship service beginning at 10 a.m. Rev. Ellwanger is best known as a civil rights activist who marched alongside Dr. King.

The morning service will be followed by an 11:30 a.m. outdoor rally, 12 p.m. community lunch, and 1 p.m. screening of the documentary I Shall Not be Silent. The film highlights the work of Rabbi Joachim Prinz, a key figure in the American civil rights movement.

The program will also include Ridgewood and Glen Rock student speakers and musical performances by the Indian Hills Chamber Choir and Men of Umoja chorus.

“We are thrilled that Senator Booker and Rev. Ellwanger will be joining us as we shine a light on the continuing struggle for racial justice in our country,” said committee co-chair Alice Newton. “Each of them embodies Dr. King’s legacy of not only speaking out for justice, but actively advocating for change. At a time when civil rights issues dominate the headlines – locally and nationally – we welcome their insights and inspiration.”

Rev. Ellwanger, a white pastor, led an African American congregation for nine years at St. Paul Lutheran in Birmingham, Alabama. He went on to serve as pastor of Cross Lutheran from 1967 to 2001. Rev. Ellwanger was active in the civil rights movement and shares his experiences in his book, Strength for the Struggle, copies of which will be available for purchase at the event. He was awarded the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in 2008, and continues to work on projects involving social justice and other issues facing communities today.

I Shall Not Be Silentis an award-winning documentary of the life of Rabbi Joachim Prinz, who spoke out for justice from the synagogues of 1930’s Berlin to the 1963 March on Washington. Rabbi Prinz addressed the crowd just before Dr. King delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech, urging them to actively advocate for racial and social justice.

The annual Ridgewood/Glen Rock Martin Luther King Jr. celebration began in 1983 in an effort to unite area residents, regardless of faith or ethnic background, in worship and action as they work towards peace and justice for all. Obama Administration : NO CHRISTIAN REFUGEES ALLOWED

No room in America for Christian refugees

At the end of World War II, the Jewish survivors of Europe’s Holocaust found that nearly every door was closed to them. “Tell Me Where Can I Go?” was a popular Yiddish song at the time. Decades later, the Christians of the Middle East face the same problem, and the Obama administration is keeping the door shut.

America is about to accept 9000 Syrian Muslims, refugees of the brutal war between the Assad regime and its Sunni opposition, which includes ISIS, Al Qaeda, and various other militias. That number is predicted to increase each year.  There are no Christian refugees that will be admitted.

Why? Because the Department of State is adhering with all the rigidity of a Soviet era bureaucracy to the rule that only people at risk from massacres launched by the regime qualify for refugee status. The rapes of Christian women and the butchery of Christian children do not count. No matter how moved Americans were this Christmas season by the plight of their fellow Christ followers in Syria and Iraq, no matter how horrific the visuals of beheadings, enslavement, and mass murder, the Christians fleeing death do not engender the compassion of this president.

The Christians are being raped, tortured, and murdered by militias, not by the Syrian government. This technicality condemns them to continue to be victims without hope. And this technicality is being adhered to with all the tenacity with which President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s State Department manipulated quotas and created subterfuges  to keep out the Jews fleeing the oppression of Nazi Germany. Obama no more wants the Middle East’s Christian refugees than Roosevelt wanted Europe’s Jewish refugees.

We have seen in the last several weeks that President Obama has no difficulty using his “phone and his pen,” as he dramatically boasts, to circumvent the law. When it comes to immigration, he had no difficulty enacting an amnesty that a federal judge  subsequently ruled unconstitutional. He has had no problem circumventing Congress to change the relationship with Cuba. This president has shown that he will push back on the constraints of law when he wants to get something done.

We’re raising a generation of pussies. There. I said it.

When I was a junior in high school, I had the most amazing AP English teacher. Her name was Ms. Wei. She prefaced the class by saying that she would grade us fairly, and that these grades would not always be A’s.

“I get that you and your parents all think you all are ‘special snowflakes,’ but I will grade you based on your writing, and if your parents email me complaining about these grades, I will ignore them.”

Now Ms. Wei was a little blunt for some (I freaking adored that woman, and I don’t know anyone who didn’t), but she brought up a good point.

Millennials: your parents won’t say it, and your peers won’t say it because it seems every little thing is sending you all to a therapist because you’re just sooooooo victimized, but

Get. The. FUCK. Over. Yourself.

I won’t even say pardon my French, because you know what? Don’t pardon it. I hope it offends you. Although honestly, I could say just about anything and it would offend you. Because that’s just how our generation is.

And this isn’t just some backless rant. Oh no, it’s backed by psychology and science.PsychologyToday has gathered information from colleges saying that teachers are essentially giving up and grading easier because they are AFRAID OF STUDENTS’ EMOTIONAL REACTIONS ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!

TEACHERS ARE AFRAID TO DO THEIR FREAKING JOBS BECAUSE YOU’RE SO DAMN DELICATE?!

I was a camp counselor this summer, and the next generation is worse than ours. These kids are being raised on so much organic, special snowflake bullshit that they’ll probably have a psychological breakdown the second someone tells them they’re not as perfect as they think they are. And it’s nauseating.

Newsflash: Not every single criticism is an attack on your character. Sometimes, you just suck. And people tell you SO THAT YOU CAN IMPROVE. NOT SO YOU CAN GO HOME SOBBING ABOUT HOW THE WORLD IS UNFAIR AND YOU’RE SUCH A VICTIM AND YOU’RE SO DEPRESSED NOW.

Now, I get college is stressful. I get life is stressful. And yes, words can hurt. But we have gotten to a point as a generation where people can’t even make a joke without someone going all #ThisIsACauseNow.

Please, shut up.

Most likely, you are not a victim. Everyone’s been bullied at some point. Everyone’s gotten a bad grade at some point. Everyone’s been sh*t on and hurt and imperfect AT SOME POINT.

But Rachel, everyone reacts and feels things differently.

No, no, no. Shut up. Listen. Because if you’re pissed off at this point in the article, you are EXACTLY who I am talking about.

N.J. investigative report targets car dealers over operations

The New Jersey Commission of Investigation (SCI) on Wednesday released a report targeting businesses known as multi-dealer locations that the agency said enable hundreds of car dealers to operate beyond the state’s regulatory authority.

The report, which identifies 11 multi-dealer locations (MDLs) in the state – including five in Bergen and Passaic – said they are part of a system that is open to abuses, such as non-payment of taxes by the dealers at the location, consumer fraud, and “suspicious financial transactions on a domestic and international scale.’’

Most of the report focused on the activities at one MDL, New Jersey Auto Dealers Mall in Bridgeton in Cumberland County, where 1,214 dealers are registered. The report said that dealer was a “sham that serves as the foundation for an amalgam of consumer and bank fraud, unpaid taxes, suspicious financial transactions and other questionable, unscrupulous and possibly illegal activities.” The owner also had ties to organized crime, the report said.

One retired FBI agent says Donald Trump’s claims of seeing Muslim celebrations following the attacks on 9-11 are absolutely plausible.

Jim Burkett was an assistant special agent in charge with the FBI’s office in Boston during 9-11 and afterward.  He says during that time the office received tons of phone calls from people who feared more attacks and others reporting suspicious activity.

Many of those calls, said Burkett, came from concerned and angry Americans reporting Muslim’s celebrating over the destruction of the twin towers and damage to the Pentagon.  The calls were logged, reports were made and there were “stacks and stacks” of them, he said.

Burkett says somebody in the office began labeling them “Happy Muslim Calls.”  Most of the calls he said were deemed unimportant and the agency didn’t see fit to initiate investigations.

The New Jersey Choral Society presents a “Celebration of Carols”

Ridgewood NJ,  Revel in the joyous music of the season as the New Jersey Choral Society presents “Celebration of Carols” on Saturday, December 5 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, December 6 at 3:00 pm in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 30 North Fullerton Ave., Montclair. A third performance will be held on Tuesday, December 15 at 7:30 pm in the West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe St, Ridgewood.

The festive program, under the direction of Eric Dale Knapp, opens with two Silesian folk songs“Beautiful Savior” and “Eatnemen Vuelie” (Song of the Earth) followed by the secular hymns “Fairest Lord Jesus” and “Salvation is Created.” A joyful rendition of “Christmas Flourish” by Randol Alan Bass concludes the first half.

Other program highlights include a tribute to resounding bells featuring “Carol of the Bells,” “Swingle Bells,” “All Bells in Paradise” and “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” Morten Lauridsen’s inspirational “O Magnum Mysterium,” Handel’s vibrant “Hallelujah” from

Judas Maccabeus and Randol Alan Bass’ uplifting “Gloria” conclude the program.

Linda Sweetman-Waters will accompany NJCS on the organ and a Brass and Percussion Ensemble will also be featured.

Established in 1980, the New Jersey Choral Society is one of the state’s most prestigious choral groups, well-known for presenting outstanding and unique programs. Under the direction of Eric Dale Knapp, NJCS performs three major concerts annually in Bergen and Essex counties. They have performed at Carnegie Hall and the White House and have toured internationally in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, China, Australia, England, and last summer in France.
