The Ridgewood Chinese American Association has endorsed council candidates Hache, Walsh and Voigt!!!

Ridgewood NJ, For the first time, these Walsh, Hache and Voigt met a group together at the request of the RCAA.
In a warm and inviting gathering on Saturday, about 30 members of this organization came out to an establishment in Waldwick owned by Travell parent, Yongxi Ke, to meet and speak with these 3 candidates. The event was largely organized by a group of Travell parents including Yimin Zhou.
Many questions were answered including positions on Valley, and thoughts on how to combat or work with the high density housing issues.

It was stressed that these are independent voices,and independent candidates who are willing to work with residents, and each other, for the good of Ridgewood.
This is a very underrepresented community in our town, and it was amazing to see how much interest they have in this election.
A huge thank you to the hosts, and to the candidates for attending.

The theme for the Parade this year is “America the Beautiful – Celebrating 100 Years of our National Parks”  Our theme this year honors the creation of the National Park Service through the Organic Act of 1916 signed by President Woodrow Wilson and originated by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Each year, the Fourth of July Celebration Committee chooses a theme that celebrates a certain aspect of American history or culture. The theme also serves as the basis for the float competition held among the town’s elementary schools.

Honoring Extraordinary Bergen County Women Including Two Ridgewood ResidentsYWCA Bergen County has announced on May 9, 2016 the organization will mark its 95th anniversary with “95 Years of Walking the Talk: A Celebration of YWCA Bergen County,” at Seasons in Washington Twp., NJ.

This will be a unique event for YWCA Bergen County and for its supporters. “We are planning an elegant, full-scale celebration,” says CEO Helen Archontou. “We want to draw in the entire community—members past and present, young families, with a special focus on welcoming men—as we take this moment to celebrate all that we’ve been, all that we are, and all that we will be.”

At the heart and center of the celebration are four incredible women:

• Joan Groome, Executive Director of the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce and former YW Development Director will be honorary legacy host. “Joan’s dedication to YWCA Bergen County helped build our organization and she continues to inspire us,” says YW CEO Helen Archontou.
• Ridgewood’s own Charlotte Samuels will receive YWCA Bergen County Young Leader Award. “Charlotte is an incredible young woman. Her achievements as an athlete and swimmer only begin to showcase her power and integrity.”
• Gina Plotino, a member of Women United in Philanthropy, and VP of Operations at Bergen County United Way will receive our YWCA Bergen County Beacon of Light Award for her dedication to lifting up and mentoring women and girls.
• Assemblywoman Valerie Vaineri Huttle will receive our YWCA Bergen County Woman of Action Award for her courageous work around key individual rights issues including ending campus sexual violence. Archontou says, “Valerie has been a friend to the YW and to all women as she courageously takes on the most meaningful battles.”

The program will also feature five “stand out” men from our community who will be there to “stand up” for Bergen County women.

Ridgewood resident Nell Doremus started the YW back in 1920 as a way to support single women who wanted to work and live on their own. Her dream has given way to a profound local legacy of service and support as YWCA Bergen County has pursued its mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, dignity, and freedom for all, spreading its work beyond Ridgewood and throughout Bergen County.

“We are so very excited about honoring these remarkable women and about this fundraising and awareness building celebration,” says Archontou. “It’s a chance to open the community’s eyes to the full range of our programs and services.”

Ridgewood Firefighter Rescues Cat

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood firefighters were summoned late Saturday afternoon, 4/30, to rescue a cat that was stuck in a large, below ground level window well at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 1 Passaic Street, Ridgewood. Ridgewood Fire Fighter Paul Brennan climbed down a ladder, calmed the beast, and then carried it back up the ladder to ground level.

The apparently uninjured animal escaped, making a run for it prior to being put in a box for transport to a local shelter, and was last seen running across the church’s lawn into the back of a nearby apartment building.

Village of Ridgewood candidates Willett, Weitz,and Brooks Continue to Push the Exclusionary Divisive Politics of the Current Council Majority

Ridgewood NJ, The progress Ridgewood group has an ad in the paper saying those are the 3 that will be at the candidates forum at Park West Loft on May 2nd. You can only go, if you signed the pledge, so i guess that means they signed it. Nice to know that 3 ( Janice M. Willett, Evan Weitz,and Richard S. Brooks )of the candidates have already decided to be exclusionary, and not listen to others that may have a different opinion then them.
At the candidates debate, all 6 candidates said the current council has been too divisive. Some of the language from the 3 that signed the pledge said “all groups need to be included and involved”, “the council works for everybody. Everybody needs to be informed”, “lead by example”, “public discourse needs to be lifter to a higher level”, “inclusiveness, solutions, and a united approach to figuring out where we’re going, and how to get there”.

Nice to know that the 3 have already shown us that their words don’t mean much, since their actions have proven to be the opposite.
If you want your village government to be exclusionary, then you know who to vote for.
If you want your village government to be individually thinking people, with varying backgrounds, who are willing to discuss the issues with anyone, you need to vote for Voigt, Hache and Walsh.

Vote for Voigt So I Can Go Back to Just Being a Ridgewood Dad

Until last year, I attended only one Village Council meeting in my entire life growing up in Ridgewood. In 1982, I watched in awe as my older brother, Ed, in his red, hand-me-down blazer, represented Orchard School during the “Meet the Mayor” ceremony hosted by Mayor Butler. Ed had a very important issue to address with the Mayor that night – namely, why our neighborhood pals couldn’t use the Bellair tennis courts as our after school street hockey rink. Those were simpler times in Ridgewood, when parents and kids mainly focused on family meals, school work and sports. We didn’t have to worry about whether our elected council members were doing what was best for our Village.

My lack of attendance at Council meetings ended this past September when I rushed from Willard’s “Back to School Night” to the Village Hall meeting about the construction of high density housing. Since then, I have attended or watched every Council meeting – mostly in shock about the “supersizing” of Ridgewood. Like many, I’ve become an “activist” out of pure necessity, meeting with fellow residents, discussing the challenges to the way we live, raising funds, and strategizing about how to preserve everything special about Ridgewood. We skip baseball practices, miss family dinners and go to work bleary-eyed from attending marathon Village Council meetings.

The truth is, I don’t want to do any of it. I want a Ridgewood where my elected Village Council members work together and compromise to make wise decisions that benefit the Village today and in the future. I think Jeff Voigt is the perfect candidate to do just that. I know Jeff and his family as both neighbors and fellow Mount Carmel parishioners. Jeff is very bright. And I admire that he’s also an independent thinker who isn’t running on a ticket. Jeff is very accessible and always willing to have a coffee or chat to hear different points of view. Jeff is honest and pragmatic.

I strongly endorse Jeff Voigt for Council. He will keep our Village a village. He will support sensible growth. He will choose residents over developers. He will give me the comfort that our Village is in good hands so I can go back to just being a dad, husband and coach.

Americans haven’t gotten a raise in 16 years

Mark Twain is credited with saying “figures don’t lie, but liars figure.” If he were around today Twain’s quote might go something like this: “Figures do lie, and liars figure out how to make people believe them.”

Granted, not as catchy.

But my quote goes a long way toward explaining something that is bothering many political pundits today. President Obama whined last week that he’s not getting enough credit for the economy.

Democrats are besides themselves wondering why Americans are so angry that they might be willing to elect Donald Trump president when the official unemployment rate is only 5%, oil prices are near their lowest level in a decade and the economy has been expanding for seven straight years.

Why aren’t Americans happier?

One of those pundits made me chuckle Tuesday night when he was talking about Trump’s primaries victories in another five states. He suggested that Americans were somehow being brainwashed by the media into thinking the economy was really bad when in fact it was good.

The rate that Americans own their homes fell in the first quarter to the third lowest on record, another indication that worsening finances as well as changing preferences since the Great Recession are altering behavior.

The Commerce Department reported that the ownership rate fell a tenth to a seasonally adjusted 63.6% in the first quarter, marking the third lowest figure since the 63.5% low in the second quarter of 2015. The ownership rate was 67.8% in the quarter when the U.S. entered recession.

The diminished interest, or ability, to own a home comes at a time when mortgage rates are low but house prices are climbing.

New Jersey parents, it turns out, were at the cutting edge of this issue about the year 2006 and have apparently since moved from a New Jersey-centric approach to a nationwide scope.

Some great parent questions are addressed in this video, including “Shouldn’t we just be quiet about what happened so as to avoid putting ideas in our children’s heads?” and “My child’s classmate just committed suicide. How much more is he/she now at risk of doing the same thing?”.

We tragically lost Alex Modlin but now is no time to put our heads in the sand about the perennial problem of depression and teen suicide.

Earlier this month, a study set dog-lovers in a frenzy after it revealed that hugging your canine companions may actually be causing them stress.

Dogs despise being held close by their owners because their first line of defense is to run away, the research explained, and suggested humans choose other ways to show their affection.

But, not all experts agree that you should stop hugging your dog.

Much of Sammy Cermack’s life has revolved around lacrosse.

Cermack, a John Hopkins University product that played a lead role in Ridgewood’s first-ever Tournament of Champions title six years ago, was named The Star-Ledger/NJ.com Player of the Year in 2010 and finished her high school career as one of the most productive players in state history.

After etching her name in the history books back then – when Ridgewood became the first team other than Moorestown to win a ToC title – Cermack scripted another chapter in her storied career two weeks ago, when she was selected by the Philadelphia Force in the inaugural draft of the United Women’s Lacrosse League.

The league, which will begin its expansion season in late May, is comprised of four teams – the Philadelphia Force, Long Island Sound, Baltimore Ride, and Boston Storm. Cermack was selected 39th overall.
