Aronsohn connection with the Ridgewood News goes deep

Ridgewood NJ, readers question, ” How dare the newspaper try to squelch letters from anyone on any side of the story, as long as they are respectful?! What the people are doing who are trying to stop the funding via the BCIA is completely legal and they are well within their rights. A grass roots effort like this stopped the turf field in Glen Rock. Citizens of this country have a right to act in accordance with the law. Clearly the triumvirate is very, very nervous because they are being outsmarted by honest, energetic and very intelligent individuals.”

Aronsohn connection with the Ridgewood News goes deep.. This is not the first time letters have not been published right Linda. Lets see who are owners of the Ridgewood News NorthJersey Media AKA The Record and who is the owners of the Record North Jersey Media Group (NJMG) is an independent, family-owned media company providing local news, information and services to the residents of northern New Jersey. Time For Action On Parking- Paul Aronsohn December 19, 2008

paul Aronsohn

“Simply stated, I am not convinced that we need a large, potentially expensive garage in our downtown area, and I am not convinced that we need additional commercial space. In fact, the more I learn about the situation, the more I believe that a garage now would be a big mistake.”

Paul Aronsohn

Too few parking spaces. Too many parking tickets. And too many excuses about why nothing meaningful has been done about either situation.

Parking problems in the Village are nothing new. We all know that. In fact, if you listen to some of the old timers, such problems reportedly predated the advent of the automobile! But regardless, the fact remains — we have some serious parking issues that demand some serious answers … now.

A PARKING GARAGE?

In this context, much of the discussion over the past year has been about the possibility of constructing a large garage on the corner of Franklin and North Walnut – a garage that would be a few stories tall and include commercial space. And much of the focus has been on three proposals submitted by three companies – all
different but all seemingly trying to address the perceived needs of the Village.

I, however, remain skeptical. Simply stated, I am not convinced that we need a large, potentially expensive garage in our downtown area, and I am not convinced that we need additional commercial space. In fact, the more I learn about the situation, the more I believe that a garage now would be a big mistake.

Granted, downtown Ridgewood is often congested and finding a parking space in front of your favorite restaurant or store can be near impossible at times. But there are always – repeat, always – empty parking spaces in the central business district. You just have to walk a block or two to find them. And if you are unwilling or unable to walk a couple of blocks, then a garage – situated on the edge of the business district – would not likely help you.

And as for commercial space, our focus should be on trying to fill the many vacancies that already exist throughout the downtown area. The possibility of adding stores – even a “big box” store – may be attractive to some, but now does not seem to be the time to take such a gamble. In addition to our own vacancies, one only has to drive down Route 17 and in neighboring towns to see that the recession is taking a very real toll on our local economy.

A PARKING COMMITTEE?

Alongside conversations about a possible garage, the Village Council recently established a committee to“undertake a comprehensive review of the parking and pedestrian issues in the Central Business District and train station….” A good idea in theory – one that I initially supported, but one that may be undermined by some of those involved in the process. Specifically, I have been told – in no uncertain terms – that the committee should not address the garage proposal and should not even seek to increase the number of parking spaces in the downtown area.

This, to me, is a real shame and a real mistake. In my mind, it defies logic and good, common sense to establish a parking committee – give it a broad, three month mandate – but not let it deal with one of the biggest perceived parking issues: scarcity of spaces. Sure, there are other issues that can and will be addressed, but how – in good conscience – can we call this a “parking committee” when it is not allowed to deal with the Village’s central parking issue?

Needless to say, I hope the new committee will see fit to revisit the garage proposal and take a broad, meaningful look at the parking situation. Comprised of some really bright, thoughtful members of our community I am hopeful that the Committee will do the right thing.

QUICK, SMART FIXES?

Nonetheless, some of the answers to our parking problem seem obvious as well as easy and cheap to achieve. Here are a few ideas, some of which are already under consideration:

Stop the meterfeeding on East Ridgewood Avenue – a regular practice of some of those who work in the central business district. The police should crack down on this practice. People who work in the downtown area should park in the many longterm spaces that have been designated for their use – spaces that are on the margins of the downtown area.

Reduce the period of time that meters are enforced in the central business district. Currently, the meters run from 9am to 8pm. That should be changed to 10am to 6pm. This would be good for our restaurant owners as well as our restaurant goers. And the lost revenue for the Village could be made up with a system of tiered parking rates.

Implement a more efficient system for commuter parking – one that provides additional spaces as well as an easier way of paying for them. Our commuters should not have to carry a pocket full of quarters, hunt for parking spaces, or worry about getting home from work on time. Consideration should be given to using the parking lot on the east side of the train station for commuters and to using new individualizedmeter technology, as suggested by the Village Manager.

Repaint the parking spaces – and the boxes between them – in the downtown area. According to a friend of mine, who happens to be a traffic engineer, we could add 30 to 50 spaces in the downtown area by just repainting some lines and adding some meters. And while I don’t know this to be true, it certainly seems well worth exploring.

Increase the number of parking spaces for people with disabilities. With the help of the Village Manager’s office, this process has already begun. The idea is to make our downtown more accessible to people with mobility issues.

Enhance the signage for parking lots. Letting people know – through better signage, the Village website, etc. –about the location and availability of parking lots would certainly increase their utilization.

My overall point is this: We have some significant parking challenges in the Village – all of which could and should be addressed in a smart, timely, and costeffective manner. And with New Jersey Transit getting ready to begin a 3year project at the train station, it is incumbent upon us to move swiftly to offset what will be a temporary loss of commuter parking spaces.

I would therefore suggest that we (1) halt the garage proposal, (2) light a fire under the parking committee, and (3)work together – as a community — to address one of the most pressing quality of life issues in our Village.

The bad news is that it has taken us so long to get to this point. The good news, however, is that we are here now,and we have five Council Members genuinely committed to addressing this issue in a serious way.

So, let’s get busy.

Readers say Investigating the flyer? Are you kidding me????, Mr Mayor Ridgewood is Not a Dictatorship

2

“Investigating the flyer” BRING IT ON. The Three Amigos and the Chamber should tread lightly. They may get caught up in any investigation for what they have done. I suspect the the person or persons that mail the flier have done their homework

Oh by the way, the law has been seriously broken; a major crime has been committed according to some speakers at tonight’s Parking Forum.

They wonder who committed the so-called crime of making Vote No parking flyers and didn’t sign name.

Don’t you know that only Vote Yes Parking signs are allowed. Those signs are not signed either; but that is OK.

And it is OK that they are placed all over Ridgewood on PUBLIC PROPERTY.

Dictatorship is alive and well in Ridgewood N.J.

So what are we going to do about it. Well, I am going to vote no on parking.

Watch out for dictatorial council practices in future. Attend meetings and let them know that democracy is NOT being practiced in Ridgewood.. Democracy in name only; not in practice.

Investigating the flyer? Are you kidding me???? What the heck is going on around here? Do they investigate every real-estate postcard that comes in the mail? Every advertisement? Such an investigation is illegal I am sure of it. And by the way, Mr. Transparent Mayor – where was all this super sleuthing when the anonymous email was sent to Mike Sedon’s employer? You were not in the least bit curious or concerned, and in that instance a HUGE ethical breach had been committed.

Let them go ahead and accuse someone about the flyer. We will be all over them like fire ants. They will rue the day they started this investigation.

Village Council Majority Continues to Bully Residents to Squash Public Dissent

Ridgewood NJ, Aronsohn, Hauck, and Pucciarelli use the word “civility” so often that you might just think that they are disciples of the church of kindness.  And yet, what are we seeing under this reign?  We are seeing so much hostility in the meetings that it is an embarrassment to behold.

The three of them have attacked Councilwoman Knudsen ruthlessly, as well as Councilman Sedon, former manager Ken Gabbert, Village Clerk Heather Mailander, former Councilman Tom Riche, former Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh, and Chief of Police John Ward.  They also have gone after certain members of the public, as when Aronsohn and Manager Sonenfeld double-teamed Mrs. Reynolds and badgered her about something she said.  She had been neither incorrect nor impolite, yet they decided they could bully her because they did not like her message.  They permitted the former labor attorney to go on a 50-minute rant, a verbal assault, against Councilwoman Knudsen.  They  publicly annihilated Tom Riche, against the advice of Matt Rogers, because they wanted to be bullies.  When people go to the microphone to speak, Aronsohn will let someone with whom he agrees talk way past the 5-minute mark, while he shuts down anyone he does not like as soon as the buzzer sounds.  This is despicable.  Mayor Aronsohn, members of the public elected you (or at least some of them did) and they have a right to speak.  And Aronsohn often strolls out of the meeting to schmooze with one person or another in the hallway, thereby thumbing his nose at whoever is speaking or whatever is being discussed in his absence.  One of them was heard screaming at Councilwoman Knudsen to the point that the witness advised Susan to file an official report.  The three of them have admitted that they text or email during the meetings, thereby disregarding that they are conducting an OPEN PUBLIC meeting.  The list just goes on and on.

And why the heck has Aronsohn allowed three consecutive meetings to extend into the wee hours of the morning?  Why doesn’t he manage things better, schedule more hearings, and make them have defined end-times, so that people can get home at a reasonable hour?  This is another form of bullying, when you think about it.  The idea seems to be that if they go late enough, people will get tired and head home before speaking.  Seemingly many people are mad enough that they stay as late as 2:45 AM.

Anyone who watches these meetings can see that the hostility level is unprecedented.  This past week one resident called another an “s.o.b,” and what did Aronsohn do?  Nothing.  One resident called three others liars, and what did Aronsohn do?  Nothing.  People are at the point of tears, they are angry, frustrated, they are pleading, they are screaming.  People are getting babysitters and missing evenings with their families and going to bed a few hours before they have to start work again, and when they are at the meetings the anger level is off the charts.  Residents are coming together to sue the Village.  Residents are spending unprecedented amounts of money to take out newspaper ads that encourage residents to fight city hall.  The entire atmosphere is toxic and completely unproductive.  The topics are many – Schedler, Parking Garage, High-Density Housing, the ramp to nowhere, the bike lane under the train trestle, and on and on.  Their ill-advised projects have pretty much antagonized the entire populace of Ridgewood.  They have made sure that no resident would feel at peace.  What a complete train-wreck this entire administration has proven to be.

And what do they do?  Preach civility!  Egad, how disingenuous.

Paul  and Albert and Gwenn like to think that there are a few “bad apples” in town who are their only critics.  They blast this Blog for the anonymity of its posters.  Um, excuse me….have you seen the hundreds of residents who come to the meetings and complain about your plans and your policies?  Not only are their numbers huge, but they are not anonymous.  Have you read the published letters in the newspaper to which authors’ names are attached?

You three have carved your legacies in this town, and the image is miserable to behold.  Yes, you will be remembered long after you have gone.  Everyone remembers the people who ran over them, bullied them, and wreaked havoc.  We won’t forget you, but oh, we will be so glad to see you go next July.

The “jig is up” on Ridgewood’s 3 Amigos

Ridgewood NJ, Finally, it has become abundantly clear, that the current Council majority totally disrespects the will and wishes of the taxpayers of Ridgewood. The Ridgewood “elite” has woken from their Pinot Noir induced stupor and seen and heard the arrogance of the three worst Council members of all time.

They are, by far, the most self-serving, small minded nit wits ever to grace the dais. The jig is up! Their back room dealing and campaign donor promises, at the expense and pain of the Ridgewood taxpayers, have come to light and people now have seen the three deceitful Council members as they truly are.

Let them know it’s time to pack their “carpet bags” and move on. Al can go back to his day job, Gwenn can get back to her regularly scheduled nail and hair appointments and Paul can move to Washington and help Hillary pack for prison.

By the way October 13  is the last day to Register to Vote in Nov. 3 Election. On Tuesday, October 13 from 8:30am to 4:30pm, voter registration forms are available in the Village Clerk’s Office on the 5th Floor of Village Hall.

On October 13 from 4:30pm to 9:00pm the Village Clerk will be in the Ridgewood Library Lobby with forms to assist residents with voter registration.

Clinton raises about $350,00 at campaign stop in Cresskill

SEPTEMBER 25, 2015, 6:52 PM    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2015, 7:31 PM
BY DUSTIN RACIOPPI
STATE HOUSE BUREAU |
THE RECORD

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton stopped in North Jersey on Thursday night and left having raised about $350,000 for her campaign from a crowd that included some of the state’s most powerful Democrats.

Clinton, a former Secretary of State, was hosted by Michael Kempner and his wife, Jacqueline, at their Cresskill home. Michael Kempner heads East Rutherford-based MWW Public Relations, one of the largest marketing and public relations firms in the state, and was a top fundraiser for Clinton’s failed 2008 campaign for the White House. The Kempners also hosted President Obama in 2010 and Vice President Joseph Biden in 2011.

On Thursday night, Clinton mingled with the crowd and posed for photos with about 50 guests. She then spoke for about 20 to 30 minutes, touching on a wide range of issues – education, the environment, drug addiction, transportation and issues affecting women and children. She also took a shot at Republicans, telling donors and guests that the GOP is “going from the party of Lincoln to the party of Trump,” Kempner said, referring to the businessman-cum-Republican frontrunner Donald Trump.

Readers says Mayor Aronsohn will pay at the Next Election

aronsohn_070512_rn_tif_

The terrible three campaigned heavily for Mr. (RBSA) Albano and he was defeated heavily, squished under the shoes of the sane voters of Ridgewood. Councilwoman Hauck was seen and heard in the hallway outside the Annie Zusy room talking into her cell phone while the vote counts were being revealed, and she was referring to the Ridgewood voters as idiots. They wanted Albano something fierce. Remember, we all just get one vote, so you are wrong, they will not get reelected. No way.

And it isn’t over yet. in the council’s attempt to put the kabash on the Friends of Sciedler’s resolution ,they voted in a resolution that allows for interested parties to come forth with a use for the house and funding options. They accomplished that. While people are disillusioned, the wheels are still turning. Perhaps an ordinance, ” Preserve the Status Quo” which would prevent any destruction of the house and trees before a formalized plan for the property is adopted could be passed or at least argued for. We may have a new council in May which is better in tune with the people. Regarding our former mayor, we would be lucky go have him back and/or Bernie. I can only hope.

Just change the municipality’s name to Ridgewood, and the Mayor’s name to Paul Aronsohn, and this letter would work perfectly.  It appeared in today’s The Record.

Mahwah mayor

forgets whom he serves

I was coming of age during the Nixon administration, and although I was not old enough to vote, I knew even then that when political wrongdoing goes unaddressed, it compounds exponentially.

Much like President Nixon, Mahwah Mayor Bill Laforet seems to have forgotten that he serves the people of Mahwah at the discretion of the people of Mahwah. His actions reflect upon the people of Mahwah. Neither I nor my Mahwah neighbors have abandoned due process.

I have no desire to change the township of Mahwah from a democratic republic to an autocratic government. The actions of the mayor suggest that such a change has taken place.

Mahwah is not a business, and it is not set up to run like a business. We have checks and balances, as do all levels of American government. For reasons that I do not understand, Laforet suggests that he runs Mahwah like a business, forgetting that there are procedures that need to be followed. Perhaps Laforet can save the township the embarrassment of a possible recall and, like Nixon, resign.

Aronsohn pokes fun at Mahwah Town Council Re: recent meeting fiasco

Civility For Thee…

…but not for me. As if his verbal thrashings of former village council members were not enough, a certain someone is at it again. While pontificating on the importance of “civility,” he performs the nearly impossible feat of serving up a heaping helping of boorish incivility to yet another colleague. The next nonsensical forum Mr. Mayor convenes should be an in-depth analysis of why the fellow to his left can’t seem to mind his manners. The unintended consequence of those “transparent” public meetings is a never-ending video stream of reference for anyone who may have forgotten just how uncivilized Frick and Frack can be. Aahhh, Mahwah..such a lofty goal.

Ridgewood NJ, Just moments after Ridgewood Deputy Mayor Albert Pucciarelli and Councilwoman Susan Knudsen got into a rather heated verbal exchange on the dais (over a report Knudsen had requested from the Village’s new Building Department Director Thomas Yotka), Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn publicly poked fun at Mahwah’s Town Council in connection with a recent meeting in Mahwah, captured on video, at which the tempers of several Town Council members flared up.

This longtime Blog reader and contributor now wonders if Mr. Aronsohn actually listens to or looks at anyone but himself during meetings of the Ridgewood Village Council.

Because if he did, he would certainly recognize that the behaviors of many people sitting on the dais along side of him (both elected and appointed representatives of the Village) are far from being what I would classify as respectful of others. Phrases such as “. . . don’t flatter yourself” and body language like a deliberately exaggerated rolling of the eyes (in response to an impassioned speech by a member of the audience or Councilperson) have no place on the dais.

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. An old, but appropriate, proverb with respect to Village Council actions of late.

Reader says Interesting that three people in a small town can be so out of touch

Hope The Mayor and his two running mates have enjoyed their time on the Council. With the still unfolding UnderPass debacle, the interminable Valley mess, and the prospect of Fort Lee springing up in downtown Ridgewood I would guess we are going to see three new faces on the Village Council after the next election. The results of the last election show just how fed up people are with all the talk of major developments.

Interesting that three people in a small town can be so out of touch with how people feel. You never know what issue is going to galvanize/rally people to a cause. This road work is really going to make people step back and ask what the hell is going on and who is in charge and what is this town going to look like if they stay in charge.

Village Business owner Paul Vagianos, mayor face off

The Ridgewood News

Business owner, mayor face off

To the editor:

I’ve got a bone to pick with Mayor Aronsohn. No, it’s not about multi-family housing, Valley Hospital or the ramp to Graydon Pool. It’s about something important. At the Huddle Zone celebration that took place at the old Bank of America building the day before the Super Bowl, Mayor Aronsohn and I engaged in a “friendly” game of ping pong. Now, I’ve always felt that he and I were friends (perhaps I was lulled into a false sense of security by that nice name of his – the first name, not the last – thinking we were kindred spirits of a sort). But apparently, that is not the case. I always thought he was a different kind of politician, but apparently I was wrong. He will do anything to win.

Yes, he beat me that day and went on to shout it from the rooftops in his “Mayor’s Corner” column in The Ridgewood News (I’m surprised it wasn’t in the headline – “Mayor Crushes Greek Restaurant Owner.”) Well, let’s set the record straight about what really happened that day. Despite the fact that Mayor Aronsohn didn’t give me any time to warm up, after having played several games himself that day, I pulled out to an early lead and kept it the entire way. And then, when I was ahead 15-12, something happened. I’m not sure how he did it but, all of a sudden, I couldn’t seem to find the ball as he was hitting it over the net. It was as though the ball just disappeared. He scored nine consecutive points to win 21-15. Maybe he slipped something into my drink or somehow reflected the sunlight off his wristwatch, blinding me. (Yes, I know it was indoors, but that building has big windows!) Something happened at that point in the game, and I was helpless before him.

Reader says time to end Mayor’s Monthly Column in the Ridgewood News

Seriously, whether you like our mayor or don’t, Boyd has a very good point. Why should the newspaper provide a forum for Mayor Aronsohn to highlight the accomplishments while ignoring the major problems? This is a non-partisan government, so there cannot be an official reply from those opposed to the leader’s views on things. But we do know that at least one letter in which Mayor Aronsohn was not being portrayed favorably was squelched by the newspaper…….and this was due to the mayor himself interfering.

I wish the Mayor would man-up and address all the issues that have been controversial and have not been resolved. For example……what ever happened to the Graydon Ramp? For example…….what is the resolution on the Christie fundraiser (even The Record wrote an editorial blasting the council’s attendance at this event). For example…..why was a personnel matter (Mr. Riche) discussed in open session when there is a strict policy that individuals are to be discussed in closed session? Lines of people jumped up to protest his actions on this, yet no apology or explanation ever came from him. I am betting that the Hope Street poles will be the same thing, never any official follow-up from him because the outcome is not good.

He sweeps controversy under the carpet and we never get a final report on these matters. The Mayor’s Column in the newspaper enables him to continue to do this, by painting a rosy picture with absolutely no space allocated to controversies and problems.

END THE MAYOR’s MONTHLY COLUMN.
