MARK LEVIN BOOK SIGNING DRAWS OVERFLOW CROWD AT BOOKENDS IN RIDGEWOOD

by WILLIAM BIGELOW9 Aug 2015

On Sunday, multiple New York Times bestselling author and syndicated radio host Mark Levin packed Bookends Bookstore in Ridgewood, New Jersey, with fans eager to get a signed copy of his latest book Plunder and Deceit.

The book has received widespread praise for its incisive look at the breakdown of our governmental system as well as the perverse mentality that government dependency has spawned for Americans who would never willingly impoverish their children yet do so in the name of statism.

According to one attendee at the Sunday book signing, Levin signed over 1000 books. Pictures showed large crowds lined up both inside and outside the store. Levin has packed events for the last several weeks—he is scheduled to speak at the Reagan Library on August 16 and, according to sources familiar with the event, the event sold out of all 1,500 tickets within minutes of tickets becoming available.

Ridgewood to review 200-year-old house

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD – The future of the village-owned Schedler property – a crumbling 200-year-old house on seven wooded acres abutting Route 17 – was suddenly back on the council’s agenda last week because of an impending deadline.

Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said time was running out to apply for a matching grant from the Bergen County Historic Trust Fund that would be used to stabilize the building.

In 2009, Ridgewood purchased the thickly wooded property, believed to have been the site of a Revolutionary War encampment or battle, with $2.7 million in open space grant money specified for active recreation. The move preempted any commercial development of the site.

Resident Isabella Altano – representing Ridgewood Eastside Development, a grass-roots citizens group – pleaded with the council Wednesday night to meet the grant’s deadline next month.

The house, which was occupied by Florence Schedler until she died in 2007 at age 104, “is in dire need of help,” Altano said. She said the “roof is falling and mold is present.”

Altano said an anonymous donor had placed $45,000 in an escrow account, earmarking the funds for the structure, but village officials said the fact that the source of the money is unknown is an issue.

Tenafly, Ridgewood study late school start

New Jersey middle and high schools start their day on average at 8 a.m. — on par with other schools in the nation but too early for students to get a good night’s sleep, according to medical experts.

And that, in turn, can contribute to a host of health problems for adolescents, those experts say.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a state-by-state analysis this week showing that school start times for 2012, the most recently available data, averaged 8:03 a.m.

The report came less than a year after the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that middle and high schools begin their days no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Only 17.7 percent of schools — and 14.9 percent in New Jersey — started at 8:30 a.m. or later.

“Getting enough sleep is important for students’ health, safety, and academic performance,” said Anne Wheaton, lead author and epidemiologist in the CDC’s Division of Population Health. “Early school start times, however, are preventing many adolescents from getting the sleep they need.”

Students should get 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep, according to the CDC. Insufficient sleep is common among high school students and is associated with such health risks as being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and using drugs — as well as poor grades, the agency said in its report.

In New Jersey, school start times have been debated for years, but the debate intensified after the pediatrics academy released its 2014 policy paper.

Ridgewood Water – Stage II Restrictions

RidgewoodWaterLogo_061912_rn_tif_

Dear Ridgewood Water Customers:

The hot weather and limited rainfall has led to a big increase in water use for irrigating. At the same time, the rainfall and groundwater status as monitored by NJDEP has recently been downgraded from “near normal” to “moderately dry.” Stage I restrictions have not moderated the water demand enough to maintain reserves for firefighting and other emergencies, so Ridgewood Water is implementing Stage II restrictions. Stage II limits the use of water for irrigation to two days per week. If your street address is an odd number, you may irrigate on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. If your street address is an even number, you may irrigate on Wednesdays and Sundays only. A hand held hose may be used at any time. No irrigation is allowed on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays except for a hand held hose.

We appreciate your cooperation in conserving this vital, shared resource.

Fortunately, Marc Favieri’s rallying cry did not fall on deaf ears Monday.

“Keep fighting,” he and his assistant coaches kept urging the U14-level baseball team.

The Ridgewood Raiders responded full bore. They came back from near oblivion to take the next step on the circuitous route toward the Little League Junior World Series by scoring nine runs in the seventh and final inning to win the state championship, 14-8, over Toms River East in Old Bridge.

The Raiders now move on to Freehold, where the Eastern Regional Tournament starts against Edgewood Little League of Bristol, Conn., tonight at 7 p.m. The tournament consists of 10 teams, from Maine to Maryland and Delaware.

The winner of that tournament earns a berth in the Little League Junior World Series beginning Aug. 16 in Taylor, Mich. A New Jersey team hasn’t won the tournament since Holbrook Little League of Jackson captured the title in 2009.

The outlook was bleak as Ridgewood entered the seventh. They were running out of time. With one out and no one on base, the situation has reached desperation time for a Raiders squad just two outs away from elimination.

“Keep fighting,” came the cry again, reasserting the faith the coaches had in the boys. It was not an empty phrase.

Citizens For Swimming program

Swimming just part of the lesson for Ridgewood program

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

A group of inner-city children filed off big yellow school buses on Tuesday, excited for the day of swimming and fun that awaited them.

They came from Paterson, where accessible bodies of water are not very abundant, to idyllic Ridgewood and Graydon Pool as part of the Citizens For Swimming program.

Founded in 1968, Citizens For Swimming is a charitable initiative that brings about 75 kids out of the urban landscape and into suburbia, in order to give them nine days of fun and to teach them how to swim.

“I work in public health, so I know that learning to swim is really important for kids,” said Dawn Walter, who runs the program. “They’ll be in situations throughout their lives where, even if they don’t know how to swim, learning a little water safety can save their lives.

“Many of the kids move up several swim levels during their nine days of lessons,” she said. “We feel that teaching the kids to swim can help keep them safe for a lifetime.”

This seemed to be a theme among the volunteers, as two others expressed their desire to teach the kids how to swim out of concern for their long-term safety.

Ridgewood Water Announces Stage II Water restrictions

drip

E – Notice – Water Restrictions – Stage ll – August 6th

Dear Resident,

The hot weather and limited rainfall has led to a big increase in water use for irrigating. The Stage I restrictions that we have had in place have not moderated the demand enough to maintain reserves for firefighting and other emergencies so we need to immediately implement Stage II restrictions which limits the use of water for irrigation to two days per week. If your street address is an odd number, you may irrigate on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. If your address is an even number, you may irrigate on Wednesdays and Sundays only. Hand held hoses may be used at any time.

We appreciate your cooperation. I know that we have communicated several times about enforcement and compliance and we have stepped up our monitoring in this area. In order for us to address this issue, we must do so together – I think we would all want to avoid going to Stage III restrictions and we can go a long way in that goal by abiding by these conservation measures.

As usual, please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Best,

Roberta Sonenfeld

Medicare cuts funds from N.J. hospitals

THE RECORD

Nearly every hospital in New Jersey is being penalized by the federal government because too many Medicare patients had to be readmitted within a month of their discharge — the highest percentage of hospitals penalized in the 50 states.

The cuts — of up to 2.49 percent of a hospital’s Medicare payments — total $23 million for the state, the New Jersey Hospital Association estimated. It is the second year in a row that nearly every hospital was penalized, except for a handful that are exempted.

Only Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus received no penalty.

Medicare, the health care program for those over 65, provides more than $3 billion annually to New Jersey hospitals, making it the single largest source of their revenue and a huge influence on hospital policies. This is the fourth year that payments from the government program have been tied to readmissions, in an effort to reward the quality rather than the quantity of hospital care.

Fourteen New Jersey hospitals will see cuts of more than 1 percent to their Medicare reimbursements beginning in October, including three in North Jersey: Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson and The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. Their patients returned at higher-than-expected rates after being treated for pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart attack, heart failure, and knee or hip replacements, the five conditions measured.

Nationwide, about one in five patients treated for those conditions returned to the hospital within a month.

Housing ordinances ready for hearing before Ridgewood Council

days are numbered

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Ordinances dealing with the amendment to the village master plan will soon be headed back to the council after a consistency review was performed by the Planning Board.

At the July 21 Planning Board meeting, members undertook the review required by Municipal Land Use Law and found the ordinances were consistent with the master plan amendment that was adopted in June.

A letter reflecting this determination will be sent to the village clerk and council, said Planning Board Chairman Charles Nalbantian.

The Planning Board as a whole will review the letter with Nalbantian at its next meeting on Aug. 4. Then, the council will take up final discussions, culminating in a final public hearing and vote.

After a lengthy public hearing process, the Planning Board approved in June zoning changes to allow multifamily housing in the Central Business District (CBD).

The AH-2 zone was created purely for housing and is intended to require affordable housing in new development. The B-3-R and C-R zone ordinances are also written to incentivize affordable housing, but allow mixed-use development.

A fourth zone, the purely commercial C zone, was also adopted.

Picky eaters more likely to suffer anxiety and depression

Fussy eating in children signals a higher chance they will go on to suffer from mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, research suggests

By Laura Donnelly, Health Editor
6:00AM BST 03 Aug 2015

Picky eating in small children may be a sign of serious mental problems that should not be ignored, say experts.

Parents and doctors who view food fussiness as a passing phase could be making a grave mistake, a study suggests.

Even “moderate” pickiness was associated with significantly increased levels of depression and anxiety in a population of more than 3,000 children aged two to six.

Those with highly selective eating habits were more than twice as likely as normal eaters to have a diagnosis of depression.

Lead researcher Dr Nancy Zucker, director of the Duke Centre for Eating Disorders in the US, said: “The question for many parents and physicians is: when is picky eating truly a problem?

“The children we’re talking about are not just misbehaving kids who refuse to eat their broccoli.”
