Oldest annual Muslim conference draws public officials to confront extremism

Harrisburg PA, Martin O’Malley, former Governor of Maryland and U.S. Presidential Candidate, is one of many political leaders who will be speaking at the longest running annual Muslim convention in America. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, the nation’s largest and oldest Muslim organization, is hosting its 68th annual Jalsa Salana (Annual Convention) from July 29 to 31 in Harrisburg, PA. Speakers include representatives of the White House, the U.S. Commission for International Religious Freedom, country Ambassadors, as well as other political, religious, academic and interfaith leaders from around the nation.

This convention seeks to unite leaders and American Muslims in fighting against extremist ideologies and radicalization for a safer nation and world.  With the official designated theme “True Islam: A Campaign Against Extremism,” speakers will discuss how to combat the growing scourge of  violent extremism and the problem of Islamophobia in the wake of rising violence towards American Muslims.

“Extremism and Islamophobia are very real and concerning issues, not only for the Muslim community but for all Americans,” said Dr. Nasim Rehmatullah, Senior Vice President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA. “If we want to achieve common peace, we must come together as leaders and American citizens to root out intolerant thinking and behaviors.”

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services hospital ratings: So How did Valley Hospital Fare ?

Ridgewood NJ, The federal government released its first overall hospital quality rating on Wednesday, giving some of the best known local hospitals in New Jersey an average or below average scores .

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services rated 3,617 hospitals on a one- to five-star scale . While the hospital industry pressured the Obama administration and Congress to block the ratings and argue the ratings will make places that treat the toughest cases look bad, but Medicare has held firm, saying that consumers need a simple way to objectively gauge quality.

Just 102 hospitals received the top rating of five stars.Nearly half the hospitals or 1,752 received an average rating of three stars. While another 1,042 hospitals were not rated, including all hospitals in Maryland.

Medicare based the star ratings on 64 individual measures that are published on its Hospital Compare website, including death and infection rates and patient reviews. Medicare noted that specialized and “cutting-edge care,” such as the latest techniques to battle cancer, are not reflected in the ratings.

White House Recognizes Valley of Ridgewood for Participation in Department of Energy Workplace Charging Challenge

Ridgewood NJ, The Valley Hospital was recently recognized by the White House for its participation in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Workplace Charging Challenge. The Workplace Charging Challenge encourages America’s employers to commit to providing electric vehicle charging access for their workforce.

Earlier this year, Valley installed five electric vehicle charging stations at its main campus, and is considering installing charging stations at satellite locations as well. Valley became a DOE Workplace Charging Challenge partner in June of this year. The hospital is now among the more than 350 national partners who have made a pledge to participate in the Challenge. The DOE is on track to meet its goal of having 500 United States Challenge partners by 2018. This is crucial, according to a White House press release, because “vehicles are parked at homes and workplaces most of the time, making the Workplace Charging Challenge a significant opportunity to expand our nation’s charging infrastructure. In fact, charging at work can potentially double an EV driver’s all-electric daily commuting range.”

The use of electric vehicles is a key component the Obama Administration’s goal “to combat climate change, increase access to clean energy technologies, and reduce our dependence on oil,” according to the release.

Ridgewood NJ, After a federal court judge in Newark denied the dismissal of a freedom of speech violation lawsuit filed by a political operative against the City of Hoboken after he was ejected from the October 21 city council meeting.

Its seems that speech can not restricted during public comment at a council meeting . The previous mayor Paul Aronsohn and his administration tried many times either through rules, ordinances ,intimidation or silly anti free speech committees like the “Civility Committee”.

While readers best describe the new council ,”it’s amazing to watch the new council meetings. Respect for all those who ask questions. Even questions that are asked are answered or will be researched and followed up on. Keep up the good work.”

A reader suggests that some Section’s of the Village Code may violate an individual’s right to Freedom of Speech , we are not so sure :

“Except upon consent of the Council, by the majority vote of those present, each person addressing the Council pursuant to this section shall be required to limit his remarks to five minutes and shall at no time engage in any personally offensive or abusive remarks. On a hearing on ordinances on second reading, a person who has previously addressed the Council on the issue may be permitted a period of no more than an additional five minutes, after all others desirous of speaking on the issue have had an opportunity to do so, provided the comments of the speaker are not repetitive. The Chair shall call any speaker to order who violates any provision of this section.”

As does this one:

“Any person who shall disturb the peace of the Council, make impertinent or slanderous remarks or conduct himself in a boisterous manner while addressing the Council shall be forthwith barred by the presiding officer from further audience before the Council, except that if the speaker shall submit to proper order under these rules, permission for him to continue may be granted by a majority vote of the Council.”

Doctor Cobb Principal of George Washington and “go to” Acting superintendent of Ridgewood Schools Dies

Mahwah NJ, William J. (Bill), Cobb of Mahwah, formerly of Ridgewood and Paramus, died on July 17, 2016. Bill Cobb was born in 1928 in Walton, NY, the second son of Russell Carpenter Cobb and Gertrude Sawyer Cobb. He grew up in Hasbrouck Heights, graduating in 1946 with honors and as class president. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy. He entered the NROTC program at Princeton University. At graduation, he was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Tarawa, in the sixth fleet in the Mediterranean.

In July 1954, he returned to Europe to marry Andree Hammer of Luxembourg. He earned his Master’s degree in Teaching and Administration at Columbia University, and then a Doctorate in Administration. He was employed by the Ridgewood public schools for 30 years serving as a teacher, principal of GW, assistant superintendent, and the “go to “acting superintendent.

Bill was particularly proud of his contribution at the Children’s Therapy Center in Fair Lawn, as well as serving on the school of the board of the Forum School in Waldwick for 25 years, 10 years as Board President.

Bill is survived by his wife Andree Hammer Cobb, his daughter Andree L. Cobb, and his granddaughter Katrina Cobb of Mahwah, NJ; his son Russell P. Cobb and daughter-in-law Cristine and son William J. Cobb and daughter-in-law Patricia of Lake Luzerne, NY; son Paul A. Cobb and his husband Tom Grady of Dartmouth, MA; and grandchildren Brian Cobb and wife Katie and great-grandson Liam of Ridgewood, NJ; Jessica McMahon and husband Christopher of Haskell, NJ; William Cobb and fiancée Kristin Dikun of Midland Park, NJ; Lindsay Moeller and husband Matthew of Haledon, NJ; and his sister Louise Cobb Moore of Highland, NY.

Bill passed away at home surrounded by his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Valley Hospital Foundation/Hospice, 223 North Van Dien Ave., Ridgewood, NJ 07450, in memory of Bill Cobb.

A memorial celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, September 17 11:30am at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood.

On July 21, Judge Kevin McNulty denied two motions filed by the city to dismiss the complaint, writing that “the same issues of factual interpretation bar dismissal on grounds of qualified immunity.”

In the 11-page ruling, McNulty earlier noted that “qualified immunity issues (such as whether a violation was ‘objectively apparent’ under the circumstances at the time) may often require the kind of factual context that is only available on summary judgement or a trial.”

McNulty also states that although it is not proven that Liebler’s First Amendment rights were violated, “if it happened as plaintiff claims, then a First Amendment violation would have been apparent to a reasonable official in these Council members’ positions.”

Central Business District Advisory Committee ,a better approach for inclusive dialogue on the Future of Ridgewood’s Central Business District

Ridgewood NJ, Many readers have voiced concern and suspicions over Village committees, sighting the fact that several namely the Historic Preservation Commission and the Financial Advisory Committees have acted more like promoters of former Mayor Aronsohn’s special interest agenda than looking out for whats best for Ridgewood .

“I don’t like it and believe we already have too many advisory groups. They have too much clout and are not necessarily to be trusted. REAC’s first pronouncement was that turf is great. FAC said we need the biggest parking garage–and the chairman of the Historic Preservation Commission concurred, no doubt helping the first garage referendum to pass last November. I’d rather see them all disbanded and let the council do its own research. Appropriate people could still help.”

“A real concern is that the new council falls prey to this nonsense. Aronson was a disaster for Ridgewood. Continuing his policies is a mistake. Yes, there is a lot on their plate, but this council really needs to get moving fast to undo the damage he did. Fidgeting isn’t going to carry the day. And if they are not up to the task they said they were capable of performing, then they need to take a good hard look at themselves. Now is the time to appeal the Valley Hospital debacle and undo the Village massive family housing ordinances.”

Councilman Ramon Hache told the Ridgewood blog yesterday that the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce will fill three positions on the Central Business District Advisory Committee . Ramon went on to say the point of the committee is to create a more inclusive dialogue unlike the previous administration that ignored residents wishes ,and only listened to a small group of people or packed committees with developers and or friends of developers creating a situation where Central Business Development plans were “out of whack” with what residents wanted giving Ridgewood residents no voice in the decision making process.

At the end of the day its a leadership issue ,although the new council is green they do appear to have all the necessary ingredients ;an open-mindedness,willing to listen ,independent thinking and a concern for the Village  to lead Ridgewood into the future.

President Obama’s Kenyan half-brother wants to make America great again — so he’s voting for Donald Trump.

“I like Donald Trump because he speaks from the heart,” Malik Obama told The Post from his home in the rural village of Kogelo. “Make America Great Again is a great slogan. I would like to meet him.”

Obama, 58, a longtime Democrat, said his “deep disappointment” in his brother Barack’s administration has led him to recently switch allegiance to “the party of Lincoln.”

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – The head of the Democratic Party resigned on Sunday amid a furor over embarrassing leaked emails, hoping to head off a growing rebellion by Bernie Sanders supporters on the eve of the convention to nominate Hillary Clinton for the White House.

Lingering bitterness from the heated primary campaign between Clinton and Sanders erupted after more than 19,000 Democratic National Committee emails, leaked on Friday, confirmed Sanders’ frequent charge that the party played favorites in the race.

In a statement, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said the best way for the party to accomplish its goal of putting Clinton in the White House was for her to step aside. Sanders had demanded earlier in the day that Wasserman Schultz resign.

The furor was a blow to a party keen on projecting stability in contrast to the volatility of Republican candidate Donald Trump, who was formally nominated at a raucous convention in Cleveland last week.

It also overshadowed preparations in Philadelphia for Clinton’s coronation as the nominee to face Trump in the Nov. 8 presidential election. She will be the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. political party.

The four-day Democratic convention will open on Monday. In some good news for Clinton, The New York Times reported that businessman and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will endorse her in a prime-time speech on Monday, saying she will be the best choice for moderate voters in 2016.

The cache of emails leaked on Friday by the WikiLeaks website disclosed that DNC officials explored ways to undermine Sanders’ insurgent presidential campaign, including raising questions about whether Sanders, who is Jewish, was really an atheist.

Sanders said Wasserman Schultz, a U.S. representative from Florida, had made the right decision for the future of the Democratic Party. “The party leadership must also always remain impartial in the presidential nominating process, something which did not occur in the 2016 race,” he said.

New Central Business Advisory Committee just Another Way to Fast Track High density housing?

Ridgewood NJ, while the Village is looking for volunteer’s for the Financial Advisory Committee in an effort to turn it into a real financial advisory committee,by recruiting people with financial backgrounds instead of the current group of lawyers and political “yes men” that the ex mayor pushed . Many residents
have also asked to make sure the Financial Advisory Committee or FAC also post agenda’s and record minutes.

Meanwhile the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce is looking to control the New Central Business Advisory Committee.

The Chamber sent out and eblast to all it members asking them for input. Readers of this blog have already voiced concern about the Central Business Advisory Committee saying, “Another way to get Paul the Greek, John Saraseno and Ed Sullivan a fast track to the Council. Who thought up this committee?”

Others were even less impressed with the idea saying ,”(CBDAC) Another new committed ! What did we elect council for?”

The mission statement for the CBDAC committee:The Central Business District Advisory Committee will work with the Village Council, residents and businesses to evaluate and initiate enhancements to improve traffic flow, parking, pedestrian safety, and the mix and balance of business establishments; while incorporating and refining the CBD’s historic elements and beauty to create a desirable, vibrant and memorable destination for all visitors.

The Village Council is looking for residents who are interested in volunteering to serve on the Financial Advisory Committee and the Central Business District Advisory Committee (CBDAC).

The Financial Advisory Committee assists in the review and understanding of the financial considerations necessary to the operation of the Village and the Village’s preparation of the Annual and Capital Budgets; provides review, advice and recommendations to the Village Council on Village financial and budgetary matters; and prepares an annual report for the Village Council to assist the Councilmembers in their budget preparation.  Members will preferably have strong finance, accounting, government and/or business backgrounds.

The Central Business District Advisory Committee (CBDAC) will work with the Village Council, business owners and residents to evaluate and initiate enhancements to improve the viability of the CBD, including traffic flow and patterns, parking, pedestrian safety and the balance of commercial uses; while maintaining and refining the historic and aesthetic elements to create a more desirable, vibrant and memorable destination for all visitors. The CBDAC is made up of one representative from the Chamber of Commerce; one representative from the Ridgewood Guild; five Ridgewood residents (one of whom shall be a member of the Citizens Safety Advisory Committee); and three business owners, one of whom is a property owner in the CBD.

Ridgewood NJ, YWCA Bergen County is holding its July WEN is Now: Women’s Empowerment Network event, “You Are So Much Greater Than You Think!”, on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 from 8:30 to 10:00 am at 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood.

We go through life wearing many different hats and we answer to many different titles; relatable challenges that women experience, which also help us to create bonds with each other. While we are loving, giving, caring and working for others we tend to put our dreams and innermost desires on hold, or we simply let them go.

Aronsohn’s recent op ed piece in The Record and Pucciarelli’s letter to the editor in The Ridgewood News suggest that their plan is to lob hand grenades into the Knudsen administration’s agenda with the hopes of inflicting casualties of some sort. SORE LOSERS.

The new Council is awesome and out of the ordinary issues will be attributed to those 3….so we will overcome. They are already off to a great start repealing Pfundwood! Can we get rid of that Gyro Wall next? Tell the sidewalk Nazi he may be next after the wall fall…wasn’t he responsible for the $750,000 coin guy? People have to be held responsible.
