Ridgewood Guild offers art, music, films

The Ridgewood Guild is giving residents an opportunity to take in cultural programs, free of charge, on several evenings throughout the summer.

One such program is Music in the Night, a live music performance hosted by the Guild each Friday.

The event, which takes place primarily outside Guild businesses, features musicians of all sorts, “from soloists to five-piece groups and in between,” according to the organization’s president, Tony Damiano.

The performers also range in age, with 11-year-old Jake Thistle being the youngest thus far, Damiano said. Many students from Ridgewood High School also grace the stage.

Garrett : SEC Pay Ratio Rule will do nothing to provide useful information to investors, improve our economy, or help struggling Americans find a job

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government-Sponsored Enterprises, issued the following statement after the SEC announced a finalized pay ratio rule as required by Dodd-Frank:

“The pay ratio rule will do nothing to provide useful information to investors, improve our economy, or help struggling Americans find a job.  What it will do is impose substantial costs upon American businesses and their shareholders, and make our capital markets less attractive for growing companies. We need to work to grow our economy and expand opportunity for all Americans—not create new red tape and regulations that do nothing to achieve those goal.

Garret also offered a special thanks to Ciaran, Jonathan, Michael, Allison, Catherine, Joe, and Kayla,all  interns from his Washington, D.C. office, Garret said “for all of your hard work this summer! You did a great job, and I hope you learned a lot during your time on Capitol Hill.”

Ridgewood school officials respond to low score on teacher evaluation

Ridgewood education leaders this week expressed disappointment with the recently released AchieveNJ Teacher Evaluation chart, saying the scoring system doesn’t tell the entire story.

Village teachers scored collectively low in the evaluation, a tool used by the state to gauge which educators and schools are the most effective. Specifically, the chart showed which teachers fall into the “effective” and “highly effective” categories, and gave a percentage of the total number of teachers in the school who were highly effective.

The highest-ranking Ridgewood school was Benjamin Franklin Middle School, with a 46.15 percent highly-effective rating (24 highly effective teachers out of 52). George Washington Middle School scored 25 percent highly-effective, or 14 highly-effective teachers out of 56.

Sidewalk sale comes up big for Ridgewood stores, shoppers

The response from downtown retailers and patrons makes it clear: last week’s Summer Sidewalk Sale was a success.

The sale, which took place on Aug. 6 through 8, involved Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce businesses, which set up their wares outside in the sunshine. This helped to draw in customers, as passersby browsed a store’s merchandise without actually entering the storefront.

“People who don’t normally go to your store will pass by, see merchandise out [on the sidewalk], buy stuff and come in and take a look at what you have,” said Victor Idy, owner of Victor’s clothing store. “You make a lot of customers that way. It softens up your store; it makes it more appealing to customers who might not have come in to come in.”

In addition to drawing new customers, the sidewalk sale attracts new visitors to downtown Ridgewood, noted Walter Boyer, co-owner of Bookends.

“I think what it does is it increases foot traffic to our town, which is obviously very important,” he said. “I think a lot of shoppers from neighboring towns come here, so we get a lot of exposure from not just Ridgewood residents, but from other neighboring towns who come to these types of events.”

Readers say “THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN”, got the shaft again

Well, we can be doggone sure that the three of them lost EVERY vote from the east side of 17, and many votes from the west side of 17. We lost this battle, but we won a war, because this for sure put the last nails in their coffins. They will never get reelected. And don’t tell me the sports people will be out in force. Albano was TROUNCED in the last election, Mr. sports had a terrible turnout .

Any Ridgewood voter living east of Paramus Road would be absolutely insane to cast a vote for either ARONSOHN, HAUCK, OR PUCCIARELLI in the future. This will go down as the biggest screw job in Ridgewood’s history.

That’s gonna have to be a biiiig fence along Rt 17. It’ll look like a driving range when it’s done.And yet again, we plunder green space money for sports fields.

This was a done deal before the property was even bought. What people need to understand is the way some residents get themselves on committees and boards precisely to do the opposite of what the board purportedly is for.

Despite what the Deputy Mayor said last night, I predict the following:

1) The house will soon be bulldozed to the ground.
2) There will be artificial turf.
3) There will be lights.
4) The property will be clear cut of all trees.

You voted them in ladies & gents of the Salem Ridge area. Now you must pay the price.

The Lawns residents should pay attention to what happened last night because Lower Hawes field was mention. That will be the next target for Fast Eddie and the RBA.

RIDGEWOOD — An investigation has been opened into the illegal dumping of two truckloads of construction debris behind the village’s composting site along Lakeview Drive.
Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said this week that Ridgewood police are attempting to track down the source of the unlawfully discarded asphalt and concrete.

Assorted construction materials were also deposited behind the village’s composting facility, Sonenfeld said.

Ridgewood endorses 2012 report on Schedler property

Two resolutions related to Ridgewood’s historic Schedler property were put to a vote Wednesday night, with the governing body deciding in favor of endorsing recommendations made for the property by the village’s Open Space Committee and voting against the authorization of filing a Bergen County Historic Trust Fund matching grant for money related to the 200-year-old Zabriskie-Schedler house.

The subject of the Schedler property was revived last week as residents appealed to the council to support a grant that would be used to stabilize the house. The grant had a deadline of Sept. 3.

After a lengthy discussion and public comment, two resolutions were considered on Wednesday’s agenda. One resolution adopted the recommendations set forth in a 2012 Open Space Committee report that determined the Schedler property should be developed for recreational purposes, including a 90-foot baseball field with an overlay multi-purpose field for soccer and lacrosse.

The resolution also makes several other recommendations, including leaving the fate of the Zabriskie-Schedler house in the hands of the Village Council. It also provides guidelines for “interested citizens” to “raise and expend private funds for the purpose of stabilizing the house until a decision is made by the Village Council,” which some council members said made the second resolution to approve the grant unnecessary.

Mayor Paul Aronsohn stated his belief that the Open Space Committee report strikes “the right balance” and meets the needs of all Ridgewood residents.

The Internet company used by Hillary Clinton to maintain her private server was sued for stealing dozens of phone lines including some which were used by the White House.

Platte River Networks is said to have illegally accessed the master database for all US phone numbers.

It also seized 390 lines in a move that created chaos across the US government.

Among the phone numbers which the company took – which all suddenly stopped working – were lines for White House military support desks, the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, a lawsuit claims.

Others were the main numbers for major financial institutions, hospitals and the help desk number for T2 Communications, the telecom firm which owned them.

A lawsuit filed on behalf of T2 claims that the mess took 11 days to fix and demands that Platte River pay up $360,000 in compensation.

Drudge, Fox News could be censored under new federal rules, experts warn

A Washington, D.C., appeals court is set to hear arguments later this year on new net neutrality rules, which critics say could lead to government regulators censoring websites such as the Drudge Report and Fox News.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit will hear oral arguments against the Federal Communications Commission’s rules on Dec. 4. A panoply of amicus briefs filed with the court last week offer a preview of the arguments.

In its February vote on net neutrality, the Federal Communications Commission stated that broadband providers do not have a right to free speech. “Broadband providers are conduits, not speakers … the rules we adopt today are tailored to the important government interest in maintaining an open Internet as a platform for expression,” the majority held in its 3-2 vote.

The rules, which went into effect in June, require that broadband providers — such as Verizon or Comcast — offer access to all legal online content. It did not place such a requirement on “edge providers,” such as Netflix and Google. The FCC defines edge providers as “any individual or entity that provides any content, application, or service over the Internet, and any individual or entity that provides a device used for accessing any content, application, or service over the Internet.”

New Jersey lawyers might have some new defenses against drunk driving cases. Courts may see a growing number of issues involving the rules of evidence as a result of a recent ruling by the New Jersey Supreme Court – but there was no choice. In Missouri v. McNeely (2013), the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the State of Missouri’s argument that exigent circumstances necessarily exist when an officer has probable cause to believe a person has been driving under the influence. Pedestrian was struck and seriously injured on Thursday morning in Ridgewood

the staff of the Ridgewood blogRidgewood NJ,  An adult female pedestrian was struck and seriously injured on Thursday morning, 08/13, while she was walking through a municipal parking lot in Ridgewood. The incident occurred at approximately 11:20 AM in the Cottage Place parking lot off of East Ridgewood Avenue.

Ridgewood police, fire and EMS personnel responded to assist the victim, who was transported by ambulance to The Valley Hospital. The driver of the vehicle that struck the victim was backing out of a parking space at the time of impact. No summonses were issued by police at the scene.

Police: Brother, sister charged in connection with theft of bag of ATM money in Mahwah

MAHWAH — Police have arrested a brother and sister in connection with a stolen bag containing $150,000 cash that had been accidentally left on a curb in Mahwah last month.

Mahwah Chief James Batelli said that Jamar Bludson, 35, was apprehended in Newark on Tuesday, around the same time his sister, 32-year-old Irvington resident Tamirah Laberth, was detained by police.

The other suspect in the bag’s theft, Alton Harvey, 42, of Hillside, was arrested a few days after the alleged crime. Harvey and Bludson were both charged with one count of theft of mislaid property, a second-degree crime.
