An important change needs to be made in Ridgewood

Jeff Voigt Ridgewood Council

Dear Mayor Knudsen, Deputy Mayor Sedon, Councilman Hache, and Councilwoman Walsh:

I was recently shown copies of email messages between Councilman Jeffrey Voigt and Alfred Doblin, editorial page editor of The Record, obtained from the Village by a fellow resident via the Open Public Records Act. I will not quote them here because I believe that you have all seen them.

Background: earlier this month I read an editorial by Mr. Doblin in which he urged Ridgewood’s Village Council to permit a rainbow flag to be flown on municipal property. I was disturbed by several aspects of the editorial and sent Mr. Doblin an email message providing my phone number and asking if we might talk about it. He called me and we spoke. At the end of our conversation, he invited me to write a letter to the editor repeating my views and said he would make sure it was published. Although I was very busy preparing for a trip, I took the time to write the letter, which after some editing by him was published the next day. At that time I had not yet read Councilman Voigt’s op-ed piece on the subject; I learned of its existence later. They were posted separately at northjersey.com but ran on the same page of the “hard copy” of the paper on May 10.

Contrary to Councilman Voigt’s suggestion via email to that very editor, Mayor Knudsen neither wrote the letter for me nor helped me to write it. This claim was uncalled-for, inaccurate, and insulting. I can still hardly believe the councilman thought it, much less expressed it.

The problem for the village and residents goes beyond defamation. At more than one council meeting, Councilman Voigt has displayed disruptive, distracting, erratic, and frankly infantile behavior on the dais. His facial expressions and body language have indicated extreme irritation with what was being said or voted upon. He has repeatedly refused to be silent when a point of order has been called. He has stood up and approached and loudly cursed at our Village Manager in the full view and hearing of all. i have often asked myself whether I was sitting in a municipal courtroom or the gym in a junior high. He has shown contempt for his fellow council members and the public, going so far as to sneer openly at the mayor while she was speaking and to name in a negative way residents who routinely make the effort to observe our elected officials, as numerous council members over the years have repeatedly implored residents to do. If only more residents had the time and interest to do the same! As thanks for our ongoing concern about municipal issues and sincere contributions toward enhancing our village’s quality of life, we became the victims of a councilman’s diatribes. Is it appropriate for us to be named on the public record in such a manner? I thought we deserved a medal, not a punch in the face.

Flailing even farther into cyberspace, Councilman Voigt has now posted on his Facebook page (www.facebook.com/jeffrey.voigt.3) the OPRA requests by four village residents for email messages that he had sent through the village server. These requests are posted without redaction, thus openly revealing those residents’ names, phone numbers, mailing addresses, and email addresses. Does our village attorney not find this questionable?

Precisely what Councilman Voigt has against the mayor, whom in his litany of email calumnies he ironically called “mean spirited,” is a mystery to me. Whatever his issues may be, surely elected officials need to check their fury at the door and to learn how to disagree courteously and rationally without sniping at each other in emails to the local press. If our deeply embattled federal Congress can get through the day without wringing each others’ necks, can’t the Ridgewood Village Council do the same? Yet as an observer of many council meetings, either in person or online, I have never seen the mayor respond to the councilman’s outbursts other than with a calm, quiet, professional demeanor.

At a recent council meeting, Councilman Voigt exhibited dismay upon discovering, as he should have known was legal under state law, that some of his email messages had been obtained via OPRA requests. Yet he dismissed the derogatory and disrespectful statements that he had made in those messages. In journalism, this is called “burying the lede.” Moreover, these disparaging observations were made not to just anyone, but to the editorial page editor of the major newspaper in the county, published by the same publisher as our town paper. As a professional journalist exercising her right of free speech at the suggestion of that editor, I was appalled to read the councilman’s comments about me, disparaging on their face and therefore mortifying, but on a professional note as well. Suppose I wanted to approach that editor or a colleague of his for a job–or even to submit another letter? I have now been characterized by a sitting council member as “the mayor’s attack dog.” There goes my credibility as a disinterested observer!

Interestingly, one point to which Councilman Voigt strongly objected was my statement in the letter, picked up by The Record as its headline, that I believed the council had always intended to do the right thing. How could I know that?, he demanded. But wait—my letter was supportive of the entire council, including him. A major reason I had contacted Mr. Doblin in the first place and then written the letter at his suggestion was to support our council, whom I felt Mr. Doblin’s editorial had unfairly maligned. Was it wrong to state that I believed in my village council’s goodwill? What’s the problem here?

Further evidence of poor judgment at best and malfeasance at worst is that Councilman Voigt chose as his mechanism for defaming me and others a public server supported by our tax dollars. To read these words written by a sitting council member for whose election we had spent considerable time volunteering last year, including through the Preserve Graydon Coalition’s email list, was particularly disheartening. I am perplexed and disappointed that he felt compelled to state these things and find it unforgivable that he felt free to dismiss my views in writing and to compromise my credibility—to a fellow journalist, no less.

Councilman Voigt’s communications also cast false and inexplicable aspersions on the character of our mayor. Perhaps there is some incomprehensible vendetta, but if so, it would be more appropriately handled privately rather than before the cameras and the public eye. The councilman continues to embarrass himself and to make a spectacle of himself. One is forced to infer that he may be unable to control his behavior. That is a serious problem for an elected official.

These events, some of which have been widely circulated on social media and elsewhere and are likely to continue to be, have created a serious trust issue for our village. This town has witnessed more than its share of sniping, anger, and infighting on the dais. We were relieved to have put it behind us with the last council election, but “it’s baaack” with (literally) a vengeance. The situation must not be permitted to continue or intensify for the three years, one month, and six days (but who’s counting?) remaining in Councilman Voigt’s four-year term lest we descend into irredeemable vituperation and chaos.

Have you, our elected council members, conferred with our village attorney to learn what formal reprimands or sanctions might be leveled against Councilman Voigt by village ordinance, by the Faulkner form of government, by Robert’s Rules of Order, by legal precedent, by ethical codes in general, or by other precepts and means? Can four members of a five-member village council request or demand the resignation of the fifth? If so, please consider taking that course to restore decorum and public trust in our council chamber.

An apology would not “cut it,” considering that a previous apology for discourteous behavior during council meetings has been followed by even more histrionic performances. Councilman Voigt’s swift replacement would be ideal. If that is not possible, a strong public reprimand by the village attorney to calm the populace and mandated psychological counseling and perhaps medication to calm the councilman are warranted.

Sincerely,

Marcia Ringel

Ridgewood resident since 1971

Reader says Jeff was bashing Paulie A. during the campaign and now he’s doing his bidding

Jeff Voigt Ridgewood Council

I can’t keep track of this guy. He started with setting up a table in front of Mount Carmel to collect signatures against the garage. Then he turns around and starts pounding the table to build the garage. He was bashing Paulie A. during the campaign and now he’s doing his bidding . Our Mayor went above and beyond to get Voigt elected. He then turns around and stabs her in the back. He was being helped by a very active and vocal group during the campaign. After he wins, he now calls them “attack dogs” and is critical of their tactics while he himself tells people to go up to the podium with rehearsed questions. The good thing is that every time he sends his buddies up there like Hans, Evan and Rurik, they get embarrassed with real facts. Out of the gate, he wanted to launch investigations against the people he is now siding with. I think I’m dizzy. How can we do a recall?

Reader says Jeff Voigt and Evan Weitz have made repeated attempts to assassinate the character of Mayor Knudsen

Village Council

Jeff Voigt and Evan Weitz have made repeated attempts to assassinate the character of Mayor Knudsen. Along with the help of Paul Aronsohn, Roberta Sonenfeld, and Jan Civility Phillips. Fortunately, the Mayor is above board and beyond reproach, so their repeated volleys of verbal munitions have simply bounced off the mayor. And they have bounced right back to the low life small minded Voigt crew and they are starting to be seen for their true tainted colors.

Curious- the Community Relations Advisory Board of Ridgewood and Glen Rock is harassing the hell out the Ridgewood Village Council/Mayor in requesting the pride flag be flown at our Town Hall. Are they requesting the same from Glen Rock Council/Mayor? What say you Jeff Voigt? Pretty sure this smells of town politics especially when you consider Jeff Voigt is best friends w Hans Lehman who is married to Jan Phillips, Chair of CRAB. Disgusting. They say this isn’t political but it is. CRAB is politicizing this. All roads lead to Aronson-also a member of CRAB.
RESIGN NOW JEFF. BEFORE THE RESIDENTS OF RIDGEWOOD RECALL YOU.

Reader says the Ridgewood Councilman was a Plant from the Get Go

Village Council election signs

You people still don’t get it. He was a plant from the get go. A stooge of the real power in this town…the formers and the developers who pull the strings. This has been going on for years, it will continue to do so and there is nothing you can or will do about it.

Jeff Voigt Ridgewood Council

You know Jeff, a lot of people worked very hard and contributed plenty of money and time to get you elected. Now you have gone off the rails like a lunatic with your ever-present hatred of Susan. You have accused her of breaking the law but have not backed that up with anything. Nothing. Don’t the people who worked for you, and in fact all the people in Ridgewood, deserve to know what the hell is driving your unbridled hatred of our much-loved mayor???

Knudsen and Sedon went through Hades for two years with the Three Amigos insulting them at every turn. They do not deserve this kind of treatment from Voigt. It really must grate on them. If you think about it, that must be the desired result — to demoralize them, wear them out, and persuade them not to run for re-election. They are certainly under no obligation to run again but Ridgewood would be very fortunate if they were to do so. We need as many people like them as we can get in elected office. The amount of destructive energy the Three Amigos mustered and expended on a regular basis while in office was prodigious. They were constantly conniving and dissimulating, spewing their duplicitous rhetoric like possessed Energizer Bunnies. How good officeholders can justify dealing with that kind of stuff without resigning on the spot is a mystery but we are lucky here in Ridgewood.

New Ridgewood Village Council gets off to a fast start

Ridgewood NJ, Just a quick take on last night first council meeting with the new council , if tonight is any indication of things to come, so much is going to be accomplished. Ordinance  3066 is to be repealed. There was real talk about Ridgewood Water, even addressing the law suit.
The parking issues were addressed with real common sense and many new ideas as well as recognition of the immediacy of getting things done quickly.  Roberta didn’t run the meeting and actually did what she is supposed to do, inform the council!
Rurik Halaby could not help himself. He had to praise the past council and once again went on and on about how there has never been anyone like Roberta.  He gave Susan a mild lecture and talked about his belief that Valley is a done deal and to fight this would be the equivalent of endangering lives( lifes?)He cautioned Susan not to base her decisions on a few disgruntled neighbors  and move Ridgewood forward into the future embracing change and growth.  I might have made this sound better than it actually did!  But she was very polite as usual.
Hopefully we go forward with a suit against Valley. maybe it would tie things up long enough for them to start developing all the other properties they have purchased and their argument that their expansion is for the greater good will not have as much impact in a court of law as it seems to have done with the current judge.

Ridgewood Council members and Council Elect Members Place Flags to Honor Veterans

Ridgewood Honors Veterans

Ridgewood NJ, Council members Mike Sedon and Susan Knudsen along with Council elect members Jeff Voigt , Ramon Hache and Bernie Walsh spent the morning at Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood placing flags at the graves of Veterans. Thanks to American Legion Post 53 and Andy Haderthauer for allowing us the opportunity to participate in this beautiful tradition.

The kids were proud too, to take part in the placement of flags on the graves of veterans at Valleau Cemetery.

The tradition is that shortly before Memorial Day, American Legion members place U.S. flags on the graves of their fallen comrades at Valleau Cemetery.

The listing were incomplete and the Legion knew that their quiet tribute missed the graves of some veterans in the 33-acre cemetery. Some graves at Valleau go as far back to the Civil War.

In the past the Legion used what could only be described as a low-tech system for noting the graves of veterans. It consisted of seven plywood boards in the shape of sections of the cemetery. On top of the boards were worn-out sheets of paper with the names of the veterans and the plot numbers. A lot of those names and plot numbers are illegible . We just had to computerize the whole system.

17-year-old Boy Scout Andy Haderthauer, a junior at Ridgewood High School heard about the problem at a Memorial Day Service and applied his computing skills to come up with a solution. Haderthauer put in about 130 hours of work to set up a computerized a system .

With the help of Valleau Cemetery Superintendent Guy Kostka, Haderthauer began his project in August. First he put the board names on the computer list, then set out on a tour of the cemetery, looking over some gravestones that date to the early 1800s.

He also  the help of some buddies and fellow Scouts, saving him days of walking the graveyard alone and three months later, Haderthauer had made up his list, and then used software to display the information by name and plot number.

Last year, there were only 350 graves at Valleau that were known to be the resting places of veterans. Now, double that number have been identified through Haderthauer’s efforts.

The project gained Haderthauer recognition as an Eagle Scout and the gratitude of the daughter of Master Sgt. Charles Ernest Hosking Jr. – a winner of the Medal of Honor. Hosking, a 24-year Army veteran, was awarded the military’s highest decoration after he was killed by an explosion in Vietnam in 1967. He jumped on a Vietnamese prisoner who was about to set off a grenade, protecting his men from the blast.

My wholehearted support for three candidates for Ridgewood Village Council – Ramon Hache, Jeff Voigt, and Bernadette Walsh

Vote Ridgewood

To the MANY  taxpaying citizens who read The Blog,

I am writing this letter to announce my wholehearted support for three candidates for Village Council – Ramon Hache, Jeff Voigt, and Bernadette Walsh. Each of these candidates is an independent thinker, and each is truly dedicated to improving the Village of Ridgewood without ruining it.  They are informed and involved.  They are intelligent and reasonable individuals.  As a regular attendee at Village Council meetings, as well as being involved in other village governance activities, I have come to know them well and trust them completely.  They will work with the two Village Council members whose terms are continuing, and we will once again have discussions instead of diatribes, and votes on important matters will no longer be in the form of a 3-person bloc on every single issue.  There will no longer be bullying of citizens by elected officials from the dais and outside of Village Hall, no more bullying behavior at “safe harbor” places like church and in restaurants.  I encourage everyone to vote on May 10, and to cast your votes for Hache, Voigt, and Walsh.  We deserve a change for the better.

On May 10th, please vote for Jeff Voigt, Bernadette Walsh & Ramon Hache, and let’s get Ridgewood back on a path of trust in our local governmen

Vote Ridgewood

This is our Letter to the Editor, Ridgewood News today (April 22, 2016)

Merriam-Webster defines TRUST as “assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something”. In this upcoming election for Village Council, we believe finding candidates worthy of resident’s trust must be the priority, as they will be the representative stewards of our Village at this most critical time.

Jeff Voigt, Bernadette Walsh and Ramon Hache are candidates we believe meet that test. Each has a deeply rooted connection to the Village and is running for Village Council for their own, personal reasons. Each has an independently developed vision for the future of Ridgewood, and each has expressed a willingness and desire to work alongside the continuing members of the Council to improve resident input and the transparency with which our Village Council operates.
We have clearly seen the negative results of a unified political bloc’s agenda running roughshod over the normal give and take of municipal government. Let’s go for something better this time around.
Ridgewood is in desperate need of a comprehensive, long-term vision for the future. We need candidates who want to be a part of leading a Ridgewood that will progress and grow without sacrificing everything we all love about this town-the charm, the friendly atmosphere, the excellent schools and the safety for our families. We need council members who will put resident’s interests first.

On May 10th, please vote for Jeff Voigt, Bernadette Walsh & Ramon Hache, and let’s get Ridgewood back on a path of trust in our local government.
Thank you.

The Ridgewood Blog Endorses Jeff Voigt, Bernie Walsh, and Ramon Hache for Village of Ridgewood Council.

ridgewood a new begining
May 2,2016

PJ Blogger and the Staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood blog wholeheartedly endorses Jeff Voigt, Bernie Walsh, and Ramon Hache for Village of Ridgewood Council in the May 10th, 2016 elections.

The key word is “Village” in Village of Ridgewood .Technically 25,352 residents makes Ridgewood a bit larger than a Village ,but its the state of mind that is far more important. There is a uniqueness to Ridgewood that all three candidates recognize and the current council majority clearly does not. Ridgewood affords everyone an opportunity to find their own level , to contribute and to excel.

The Village of Ridgewood is chartered under the Faulkner Act offers four basic plans (mayor–council, council–manager, small municipality, and mayor–council–administrator) and two procedures by which the voters of a municipality can adopt one of these plans. The Act provides many choices for communities with a preference for a strong executive and professional management of municipal affairs.

Originally enacted in 1950, the Faulkner Act provided for three forms of government: mayor–council, council–manager, and small municipality. Within each form, letter codes designated predefined aspects of each form and its individual arrangement of options, such as partisan or nonpartisan elections, concurrent or staggered terms, all at large or a combination of ward and at large seats.

Ridgewood until recently has always been nonpartisan town with nonpartisan elections, whatever your ideology it was left at the train station before commuting home each evening.

The town operated basically in a “bubble” with great community spirit , a “can do” attitude  and very high standards and expectations for what was required of its citizens . Neighbors were expected and did step up helping out, investing ,donating and doing what was necessary to preserve the special character of the Village . Everyone contributed in their own way and was glad to do it.

Citizen’s Park was bought by neighbors and donated to the Village for neighbors, Some donated property or trusts , like Pease Library or the Lester Stable.  While others who were not so blessed financially would give their time coaching teams , hiring teenagers  for summer jobs or just doing what ever they could and because so many contributed so much ,it was like a raising tide ,it lifted all boats.

Don’t get me wrong it was far from perfect and while change came slowly ,change occurred positively impacting everyone. We still see this today with so many opportunities  for so many ; Ridgewood Sports , the Tree lighting , 4th of July celebrations, Graydon Pool , Vets Field , Super Science Saturday, Ridgewood Schools, Special needs programs, charitable giving , vibrant churches , girl scouts, boy scouts and on and on . Even today residents lead by a special needs adult Doug are raising money to rebuild La Bella Pizza after it was destroyed by a recent electrical fire . Many Village children continue to excel beyond anyone’s wildest dreams  like Sammy Cermack, former Ridgewood star, drafted in first-ever professional women’s lacrosse league , long distance swimmer Charlotte Samuels or Broadway Trailblazer Ali Stroker just to name a very few . They are all products of that very unique Village of Ridgewood way of life.

Somehow around the time of the Village Hall renovation fiasco things seem to change. Doubt was cast and the Village began to change for the worse. Formerly great schools where and we quote a BOE member “glad to beat Newark” , mediocrity began to spread . The attitude became more of taking than giving ,of cronies and profiteers, special interests and special issues. The latest council majority is nothing but a product of the lowest base greedy attitudes that so typify the rest of New Jersey and their partisan supporters . It didn’t start with three but they are the product of the precipitous decline in the quality of life in the village.

Any doubt as to the decline of the Village ,take one look at the pledge being asked of the candidates to sign supporting various development in the central business district. Signed by three of the candidates Weitz, Willett and Brooks making them whole unqualified to lead Ridgewood anywhere but down the drain. The same three candidates received dubious endorsements by the Mayor and his flunkies .

Deal making against the better interest of the voters was just not done in Ridgewood , till Mayor Aronsohn and his machine politics moved into town , The fact is most people move to Ridgewood to get away from that type of back door dealing.
And most people in town realize their very large property investment ,their home is now in jeopardy of declining in  value along with the rest of the town.

As a reminder the Ridgewood blog warned residents as to the dangers of Pucciarelli , Hauck and Aronsohn taking over the council. We warned  of over development, Valley’s arrogant expansion plans and turf fields in every corner ,yet 66% of Ridgewood voters put their property values in danger by voting in this disastrous trio.

So here we are another election but this time the whole town is at each other throats ,name calling and threats are at a fever pitch . Three sitting council members are not even running for reelection and the mayor as predicted by this blog is hot footing it out of town.

Folks its time to take out the trash . Vote for Jeff Voigt, Bernie Walsh, and Ramon Hache all three understand the uniqueness the Village of Ridgewood and are honored to be part of it. They understand the complex issues the Village  faces , the mess that needs to be cleaned up and the trust that needs to be rebuilt.

While we know Bernie for some time , we had the pleasure of meeting Jeff and Ramon for the first time and were very pleased to see they understood the concept of Village of Ridgewood and were both grateful to have an opportunity to represent  the Village and its distinctive way of life .

Understanding the Village was key to our endorsement and in the words of Edward I Koch former mayor of NYC,  ”If you agree with me on 9 out of 12 issues, vote for me. If you agree with me on 12 out of 12 issues, see a psychiatrist.” we could not agree more . We were looking for a diversity of opinions that reflected the values of the community at large and in Jeff Voigt, Bernie Walsh, and Ramon Hache we are certainly we found it.
