Ridgewood NJ, during the COVID crisis, several creative individuals had a revolutionary meeting of the minds. This week their shared vision of fusing public art into Ridgewood’s downtown will come to fruition. Sean Flanagan of the Ridgewood Arts Council and Bill Carbone, a prolific volunteer, will install the fourth and final painting in the villages’ business district on Saturday, June 19, at Pearl Restaurant.
Ridgewood NJ, at Monday’s Ridgewood Board of Education meeting, the requirements for the American Rescue Plan Federal Grant were presented. The ARP (American Rescue Plan) Act provides $122 billion in funding to states and school districts to facilitate the reopening and safe operation of schools. The portion expected for Ridgewood Public Schools is approximately $1.1 million. How the grant can be spent is still being determined by the federal government. As more information about allowable uses of these funds becomes available, plans will be developed with community input and communicated.
The first step in acquiring our allocation is to provide information to the state and federal government on specific areas of our operation (Safe Return Plan), allow public comment, and then include these summaries on the first phase of the application. The Safe Return Plan template addresses eight (8) areas of operation, which are as follows:

The Ridgewood Blog has learned that Ridgewood resident Constance “Stacey” Loscalzo, author of a rather controversial “call to action” e-mail regarding the resignation of Ridgewood Schools Superintendent Daniel Fishbein, was horrified upon learning that her e-mail was posted on The Ridgewood Blog, and on several community Facebook pages. The e-mail, posted below in its entirety, requests specific actions be directed against the two (2) Trustees of the Ridgewood Board of Education who are minorities.
Ridgewood NJ, The Ashby Award was established in 1966 to honor former Superintendent Lloyd W. Ashby and his wife, Lois, for their distinguished service to the community. The recipient is selected from nominees submitted by staff members and is someone who, in the opinion of his or her peers, has carried on our district’s long tradition of service and contribution. This is the highest honor that the Ridgewood Public Schools can bestow on a staff member.
The district names Dr. Jean Schoenlank, Principal of Ridge School, as the recipient of this year’s Ashby Award. Congratulations, Dr. Schoenlank!
Ridgewood NJ, The Tradition of Excellence Award recognizes a support staff member for extraordinary service to the district in five categories. Each year, the honoree is selected by a committee after careful review of all nominations.

On April 29, 2020, Governor Murphy signed Executive Order No. 133, which allows state parks and golf courses to reopen effective at sunrise on Saturday, May 2. Additionally, county governments will have the authority to determine whether county parks will be open or remain closed. Social distancing measures continue to be in effect for these outdoor spaces, and individuals are encouraged to wear a mask. The Executive Order and information about social distancing policies and specific areas/facilities that remain closed at state parks and forests can be found at https://www.nj.gov/governor/news/news/562020/approved/20200429c.shtml.
This afternoon, Governor Murphy announced that schools will remain closed through at least Friday, May 15, to help continue to flatten the curve and slow the transmission of coronavirus. This decision was made in careful consultation with the New Jersey Department of Health and the New Jersey Department of Education, as well as other key stakeholders. With over 75,000 cases of COVID-19 in New Jersey, we must all work together by social distancing and following the guidelines to help curtail the spread of this disease.
School budget supports the district’s mission and vision
This year’s election faces many challenges due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, which has resulted in the closure of schools, businesses, and public spaces across the country. On Thursday, March 19, Gov. Murphy announced that Annual School Elections scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, will be postponed until Tuesday, May 12, and will be conducted solely via vote-by-mail ballots, which will be sent to all registered voters.
These unprecedented yet necessary measures to flatten the curve and lessen the burden on our health care system have already had a significant impact on our daily lives. Parents are juggling work schedules and remote learning for their children. Grocery stores are scrambling to restock items as quickly as possible, but shelves continue to be emptied. Our beautiful, vibrant downtown is still and quiet; our businesses are being hit hard. People are feeling isolated and disconnected. As the district leader and a community member, I empathize with the students who miss their classmates, teachers, and school activities, the elderly who are alone, the individuals who are being laid off, and the health care workers who are on the front line of this crisis.
Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Public Schools is conducting a district communication survey in preparation for the development of a District Communication Plan, which will be launched in September 2020. We value feedback from all stakeholders in our community and would appreciate your input!

The district communication survey can be accessed through the link below and the District News section of the website. The survey will be open until midnight on Monday, March 23.
