Ridgewood NJ, at last night council meet Dr. Salvin Santino made a compelling case during public comment that Dr. Santino said he was flabbergasted that the Village was still considering sports fields at the Schedler Property. The Dr. went on to say that is it “medically wrong” to have children exercise in an area with close proximity to a very trafficked high way .
Dr. Santino went on to share the science data that led to his statement . “Pollutions comes in many different forms . Most pollution we talk about is small particle carbon dioxide but there are other kinds of pollution ie large particle pollution generated from cars and trucks” in exhaust, with diesel fumes being among the most carcinogenic . The Doctor then referred to the brake down of rubber from car tires, and the release of carcinogens when brakes on cars are applied.
Exercise he said ,”only increases your metabolism and increases your intake of carcinogens if you are near them”. he went on “Children are even more susceptible to the negative effects of these carcinogens.”

Impaired Driving Enforcement Crackdown to be Conducted Locally as Part of National Campaign

Paramus NJ, Police agencies from around New Jersey are gearing up for the state’s largest annual drunk driving crackdown. The 2017 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Statewide Labor Day Crackdown begins August 18 and concludes on September 4. During the campaign, local and state law enforcement officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols targeting motorists who may be driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement backed up by educational activities including national radio and television advertisements, posters, banners and mobile video display signs. The campaign looks to curtail impaired driving during the busy summer travel season, including the Labor Day holiday period.
“Despite years of enforcement and public awareness efforts, too many people still make the unfortunate decision to get behind the wheel while impaired. Nearly 30% of all motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey are alcohol related,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “This is a zero tolerance campaign. If drivers are caught operating their vehicle while impaired they will be arrested,” he added.
As part of the initiative, the Division of Highway Traffic Safety provides grants to local police agencies throughout the state to run the two-week campaign. During last year’s crackdown, participating agencies made 1,649 DWI arrests.
Law enforcement agencies participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2017 crackdown offer the following advice:
• If you plan to drink, designate a driver, someone who will not drink alcohol, before going out.
• Take mass transit, a taxi or ask a sober friend to drive you home.
• Spend the night where the activity is held.
• Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of your seating position in the vehicle. It’s your best defense against an impaired driver.
• If you’re intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive you to your doorstep

The adult male driver was evaluated by Waldwick EMS personnel. It is not known whether he was transported to a hospital. The heavily damaged vehicle was removed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. There was no visible indication that another vehicle was involved in the crash. Ho-Ho-Kus PD units assisted with traffic control.

Paramus NJ, A 64-year-old, 12-inch, cast iron gas main cracked in Paramus last week. Traffic snarled on Rt. 17 while we made emergency repairs…again. That was the third time in two years we’ve had to patch up this section of pipe. Installation of a replacement gas main is underway.
After decades of freezing and thawing, unprotected steel and cast iron pipes can become brittle and crack, and the joints that tie them together can leak. Along that stretch of Rt. 17, nearby construction may be another contributing factor. We have 4,000 miles of this cast iron pipe, and another 1,000 miles of unprotected steel, in our system. That’s the largest inventory of any utility in the U.S. We have so much old piping because PSE&G has been serving customers for 113 years.
As part of a $905 million program approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, we’re replacing old pipes three times faster than in the past. Last year alone, we installed 189 miles of new gas mains across our service area, including nearly 6 miles in Paramus. And we’re replacing them with highly durable plastic piping and protected steel pipes that rarely leak and will ensure safe, reliable gas service now and in the future.
For us to replace all this pipe in Paramus, we are working closely with Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera. Mayor LaBarbiera knows the investments PSE&G is making in his town’s infrastructure ensure residents and businesses will continue to have safe and reliable gas service. By working together, we are minimizing disruption and able to complete the work safely. And we are all grateful to the residents of Paramus for their patience.
We expect to have the pipes along that stretch of Rt. 17 replaced by April. There is never a good time to close traffic lanes. So while the work is a one-time inconvenience, rest assured we won’t be back to make repairs on those new mains for a long, long time.
Ridgewood NJ, A two (2) vehicle collision on Route 17 southbound near the Old Paramus Reformed Church in Ridgewood backed up southbound traffic for miles on Wednesday morning, 01/18. Only one (1) southbound travel lane was open to traffic as crews worked to contain a crash related fluid spill and clear the roadway of wreckage & debris. The adult female driver of a black colored 4-door compact was transported by Ridgewood EMS ambulance to The Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. An unmarked Paramus PD unit was the first on the scene; plain clothes officers provided shelter for the victim until Ridgewood units arrived. Ridgewood PD, FD, and EMS personnel responded to the incident.

Paramus NJ, Paramus police overnight Monday found 67 puppies packed into small metal crates in a van parked behind the Route 17 Paramus pet store, Just Pups .
Paramus Police officers on a routine patrol of Route 17 noticed a van parked behind the shopping complex where Just Pups Store in Paramus NJ is located. As the Police approached the vehicle, they heard crying and whining from the puppies that were crammed inside.

THE RECORD
Two Rochelle Park police officers shot a man who was armed with a BB gun outside the Bergen County Board of Social Services Monday morning, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said.
Police were called to the building at 218 Route 17 North in Rochelle Park by security after the man crashed his car and remained inside it, the prosecutor said on Twitter.
The officers’ shots hit the suspect in the lower part of his body and shattered the driver’s side rear window of his Toyota sedan, authorities said. Molinelli said the injuries were not life-threatening and did not appear to require surgery.
The prosecutor identified the suspect as Matthew S. Chaseman, 46, of 14 Marlboro Court in Maywood. Chaseman is being treated at Hackensack University Medical Center. The officers were not injured.
Molinelli said that it wasn’t immediately clear whether Chaseman had a real gun. The orange tip of the gun had been painted black, the prosecutor said. He said he did not know whether Chaseman pointed the gun at any of the officers.
About 11 a.m., half a dozen detectives from the offices of the Bergen County Prosecutor and Sheriff entered Chaseman’s apartment at Hammel Gardens and removed several bags of his belongings. The evidence included a bow and arrows.

Neighbors request more experts for best possible park
To the Editor:
Your reporter concludes in his article on Dec. 4 (“Officials face open space shortage,” The Ridgewood News, page A1) that one group or another will be unhappy by the council’s ultimate decisions regarding the development of the Schedler property. As a Schedler neighbor, I respectfully disagree with the conclusion.
The Schedler neighborhood is seeking the best possible design and development of the Schedler property for the benefit of all Ridgewood citizens. Specifically, the Schedler neighborhood has asked the council to hire an expert landscape architect to design the best park possible for all citizens. The current design was prepared by our village engineer, who has limited experience designing parks.
The Schedler neighborhood has also requested the hiring of a traffic safety engineer to design a safe park for the benefit of the players, their families and the neighborhood. The Schedler property is next to Route 17, where over half a million cars travel daily. Let’s be safe and hire the proper experts.
Finally, all of those cars are noisy. Players need to communicate with each other, with their coaches and with the officials. Spectators also want to converse in a comfortable environment.
The Schedler neighborhood has asked the village to hire a noise expert in order to recommend appropriate noise abatement strategies. We want to avoid spending several million dollars on a park, only to discover that it’s too noisy and unsafe.
A reputable dentist is perfect for a toothache, but you wouldn’t call him if you were experiencing chest pains. The Schedler neighborhood advocates hiring genuine experts in order to obtain the best possible park for all Ridgewood citizens. That’s a win for the players, a win for their families, a win for the neighborhood, and a win for all citizens of Ridgewood.
