The Sponsor Show is our most popular annual event at the Ridgewood Art Institute, providing sponsors an opportunity to acquire a beautifully framed original painting, from the collection donated by our outstanding artists and instructors. In addition to wonderful landscapes and still lifes, several of our professional artists offer the chance to commission a portrait or pet painting. On the night of the Gala Drawing, the name of each sponsor is randomly called to choose their favorite painting. For only $275, become a sponsor and begin creating your painting “wish list” at our Opening Reception, or anytime during the exhibition dates. Proceeds from the show go directly toward the Institute’s efforts to promote fine arts in our community.

Once again we are offering gift certificates. You can become a sponsor yourself, and you can purchase a gift certificate for a friend or family member to join you as a sponsor. A personally selected painting is a wonderful gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, weddings, or any special occasion.

A limited number of sponsorship’s are sold each year, so don’t miss out on this exciting event! Sponsorships can be purchased on line at www.ridgewoodartinstitute.org. For more information , visit our website www.ridgewoodartinstitute.org and click “Art Exhibits”.

Reader says We have something unique here and we have to be careful not to destroy it

clock_cbd_theridgewoodblog

The full page ad from the Garage Cabal was an insult. It had Roberta’s exasperated catch phrase “enough is enough”. Well, I am fed up to, but I am fed up with our local government. Look at the list of signers in the ad. I recognize many of the names of business owners and residents who make their living working for these businesses (architect, PR guy). We also have some Financial Advisory Committee and Historic Preservation members. And then there are the hangers-on Don, Tim and Rurick. They did not make the list alphabetical because you would be able to see that entire families signed the petition just to make it look like a ground swell of supporters.

We are on the cusp of overdevelopment and everyone is grabbing for what they can get. The businesses care only about themselves. If business was not profitable they would have moved on to another town. They stay because they make a buck – good for them. I did not move to Ridgewood 27 years ago for the restaurants and banking opportunities. I moved because I liked the community as a whole.

Build the right-sized garage in downtown Ridgewood and limit high density housing. Thankfully we will soon have a new council and I hope that they can slow things down. I am not against change. Planned development can be a good thing. We are a community first, not a shopping center.

Look carefully at those running for a seat on the council. Two are FAC members (we need a separate thread just about this group – what exactly is their function?) who supported the garage in its original form. A third person seems to have nothing to do with the garage/development issue (The Manchurian Candidate). He is bff with Vaggianos and would like to help out his friend on the development side.

That leaves us with three other candidates. They have posted things on this site and social media. They are explaining their positions. I am listening carefully. We don’t want Englewood and Montclair as our models for a downtown. We have something unique here and we have to be careful not to destroy it.

We have a choice we can roll over and do nothing, or get vocal, participate and give it all we got! I know it’s not easy… Exhausting, irritating but we are near a positive change…. The election. Stay strong people, we are near the end of a long and terrible reign.

Reader asks , “who is looking out for Ridgewood?”

Ridgewod Nj, Reader says , “My take away from last night is, “who is looking out for Ridgewood?”. The best questions/ concerns came from public comment which was so limited and restrictive.  The majority of Valley’s testimony centered around aesthetics:  different colors and shadings on the buildings to minimize the visual perception, green coverage to hide the mechanicals, monitoring of all the potential environmental negatives, etc.

Blais was obviously sick last night but his comment about the need to balance the positive and negatives of the expansion and also considering the regional needs was very telling.

Are there any benefits to Ridgewood in this?  I only see Valley telling us how they will deal with the negatives.  How will exiting more cars onto Linwood ever work and trucks will travel back and forth down Glenn, make a left on Van Dien and then back out the same route?  BF just put in a new driveway with an exit onto Glenn.

My feelings are we should not amend the Master Plan and continue operating under the 2010 version.  The Valley project is too big for the 15 acre lot. There is no way around this fact.  Where is our counter  offense?  It wasn’t there  last night and our only hope is that the council votes against the ordinances needed to push this through. Jeff was really great last night.  It is so hard to be heard.

Village manager Roberta Sonenfeld is at it once again

Roberta
Village manager Roberta Sonenfeld disrupting petitioners
March 31,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Village manager Roberta Sonenfeld is at it once again . Sonenfeld attempted to disrupt “petition signers” on this past Easter weekend  with high density developer John Saracino . This time the Village manager expressed her concerns in a letter to the “The Ridgewood Daily Voice” .

The Village manager voiced her concerns , claiming petitioners were misrepresenting the Bergen County Improvement Authority (BCIA) bonding referendum, saying ”  village is subject to the referendum provisions of the Faulkner Act and not the Home Rule Act. As a result, since there is no general or regular municipal election scheduled during the allotted time period, a referendum would be required to be held “not less than 40 nor more than 60 days” after the last possible date of withdrawal of the petition by the petitioners. Such a special election would cost Ridgewood taxpayers approximately $40,000 to $45,000.” “https://ridgewood.dailyvoice.com/politics/letter-overturning-bond-ordinance-will-cost-ridgewood-taxpayers/648624/

However the Village Council has since voted unanimously to rescind the village’s agreement with the Bergen County Improvement Authority (BCIA) to fund the $11.5 million downtown parking deck. The vote comes on the heels of the  council decision to self-fund the construction of the controversial 325-space parking structure on Hudson Street.

Observers note “I think she is taking this stuff personal.”

Ridgewood Police report a series of identity fraud and scams in the Village of Ridgewood

Nigerian scam michael-scott-
March 29,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood Nj, Ridgewood Police report a series of identity fraud and scams in the Village of Ridgewood.

On March 25 at about 11:45am, a Ridgewood resident reported that they had been involved in a possible scam. The resident had located a vehicle for sale through Wallapop and the seller had requested the resident purchase a Vanilla Gift Card to exchange funds for the vehicle. The resident got suspicious and did not follow through with the purchase.

On March 26, a Ridgewood resident reported that both his and his son’s social security numbers were used to file fraudulent tax returns. On March 28, another resident reported the same issue.

On March 26, a Ridgewood resident reported that someone had made unauthorized purchases from a department store using the victim’s credit card information.

According to the USA.GOV there are several ways to prevent Identity theft.

Take steps to protect yourself from identity theft:

Secure your social security number. Don’t carry your social security card in your wallet or write your number on your checks. Only give out your social security number (SSN) when absolutely necessary.

Don’t respond to unsolicited requests for personal information (your name, birthdate, social security number, or bank account number) by phone, mail, or online.

Watch out for “shoulder surfers.” Shield the keypad when typing your passwords on computers and at ATMs.
Collect mail promptly. Ask the post office to put your mail on hold when you are away from home.

Pay attention to your billing cycles. If bills or financial statements are late, contact the sender.

Review your receipts. Ask for carbon copies and incorrect charge slips as well. Promptly compare receipts with account statements. Watch for unauthorized transactions.

Shred receipts, credit offers, account statements, and expired cards, to prevent “dumpster divers” from getting your personal information.

Store personal information in a safe place at home and at work.

Install firewalls and virus-detection software on your home computer.

Create complex passwords that identity thieves cannot guess easily. Change your passwords if a company that you do business with has a breach of its databases.

Order your credit report once a year and review to be certain that it doesn’t include accounts that you have not opened. Check it more frequently if you suspect someone has gained access to your account information.

Village Manager Guilty of Official Misconduct?

Roberta

March 27,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The New Jersey Criminal Code (N.J.S.A 2C:1-1 et seq.) contains a number of offenses which are specifically directed at public officials and/or employees. Although this article is not intended as an exhaustive treatment of all state law on this subject, it will hopefully provide a working knowledge of the major acts or omissions which may give rise to criminal culpability.

Official Misconduct (N.J.S.A. 2C:30-2) A public servant commits official misconduct if with a purpose to obtain a benefit for himself or herself or another (or to injure or deprive another of a benefit) he or she knowingly commits an act relating to his or her office constituting an unauthorized exercise of official functions: or knowingly refrains from performing a duty which is imposed by law and is clearly inherent in the nature of the office. The “benefit” obtained may be of minimal value. Investigation Into Hamilton T.P. Board of Education 205 N.J. Super. 248 (App. Div.1985). This also includes benefits not received by the public official but rather by a third party. State v. Schenkolewski 301 N.J.Super.115 (App. Div.), cert. den.151 N.J. Super. (1977). To violate this section, the individual must be a public servant and the act must relate to the office. State v. Bullock 136 N.J. 149 (1994).

Village of Ridgewood sign pictured, purchased with your tax dollars by the village manager, violates 2 village ordinances

garber square LED sign

March 26,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Note that the sign pictured, purchased with your tax dollars by the village manager, violates 2 village ordinances. <i>A study conducted in 2006 by Virginia Tech for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that anything that takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for more than two seconds greatly increases the risk of a crash.  The same study also concluded that nearly 80% of all crashes involved driver inattention just prior (within three (3) seconds) of the crash.</i> This sign sits at one of three roads in town that cross the train tracks and handles a massive volume of pedestrians, cars, and now sports a bike lane. So, do as we say, not as we do.  <i>The Swedish research team suggests that digital billboards attract greater attention from drivers due to their: brightness; visibility from greater distances; and display of a constantly-changing series of advertisements. The team concluded that digital billboards “have the potential ability to keep up the driver’s curiosity over an extended period of time.” Previous human behavioral studies have shown that drivers are naturally inclined to notice bright, changing lights in their peripheral vision and to anticipate additional motion. The Swedish government had previously given temporary authorization to erect digital billboards in 2009, but as a result of this and related studies; the government has now ordered the removal of all digital billboards.</i> https://www.traffictechnologytoday.com/news.php?NewsID=45602

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The Village of Ridgewood will begin enforcement of Chapter 190-122 of the Code of the Village of Ridgewood on April 1, 2016. This ordinance regulates the construction, installation or display of signs within the Village. Please ensure that any non-conforming signs (ie. A-frames, banners, temporary signs, neon, etc…) are removed prior to April 1, 2016. Failure to comply with the ordinance may result in the issuance of a municipal court summons. Periodic monitoring will be occurring on a regular basis.

We understand the signs may be an integral part of advertising your business, but those that are not permitted by ordinance must be removed. This effort is being made to coincide with the enforcement of the Sidewalk Café ordinance with the ultimate focus on public safety.

For your convenience, the Village ordinances may be viewed by visiting the Village website atwww.ridgewoodnj.net. Please click on the “General Code” link on the right side of the homepage. This will link you to ECode 360 at which time you can search for the applicable ordinance.

Should you require further clarification on this matter or any other property maintenance issue; please do not hesitate to contact Tracy Jeffery, Code Enforcement Official at 201-670-5500, ext. 214. Our unified efforts will result in a safer environment for all.
