Ridgewood NJ, A few winter reminders .We have already experienced a couple of snowfalls this month. As a reminder, when it snows or is icy, please place your garbage cans at the end of your driveway for collection. The Village appreciates your cooperation in keeping our Village employees safe.
All sidewalks in residential districts must be cleared within 24 hours of the snow falling. Please do not place snow into the street; instead, place it back onto your own property. In addition, if you have a fire hydrant on your property, please clear it of any snow accumulation

Ridgewood Parking Permits – RPP
Hourly meter rates in all Village lots and streets are $.50 per hour from 10AM to 6PM, Monday through Saturday. 3 hour meters on streets & in all lots, except the Cottage Place Lot which has 8 hour meters.
RPP – (Ridgewood Parking Permit) provides ‘coinless’ convenience and can be used for unlimited parking in specified lots. $750 Annual permits are issued for a calendar year to residents for parking in Chestnut St., N. Walnut St., Cottage Pl., Route 17 Park & Ride Lots. $1,000 Annual Premium RPP will be issued for parking at the Train Station, and all other Ridgewood Lots. A maximum of 210 Annual Premium RPP will be issued.
$1,500 Non-Resident Permit allows parking in Cottage Place Lot; $750 Permit allows parking in the Rt. 17 Park & Ride Lot.
Payment may be made by check or cash. We accept credit cards that will have a 3% convenience fee charged to the purchaser.
If the Resident RPP is purchased later in the year, fees are prorated as follows:

Applications are available at the Village Hall Reception Desk Monday through Friday, 8:30AM to 4:30PM. All Applicants – residents and non-residents – must show current Driver’s License and valid Vehicle Registration(s) for up to three vehicles. For flexibility, you can list 3 vehicles on a permit, but the permit can only be used by 1 car for 1 parking space at a time.
All lots, including the Train Station Lot, will require a free Ridgewood Resident Parking Sticker in addition to the purchased RPP. Resident parking stickers are issued annually for free to residents only at the Village Hall Reception Desk. This sticker confirms you are a resident.
RPPs can be used in any metered space in the lots designated for that particular permit and provides unlimited parking from the hours of 6AM to 2AM. On Saturday, RPPs may be used in any lot, but not in the CBD Employee Spaces. They are not valid for street parking. The hangtag permit must be displayed on the rearview mirror when the vehicle is parked. RPP does not guarantee availability of a parking space.

Ridgewood NJ, the National Weather Service warns of Wind chill values near 0 to -10 degrees F are expected into this morning.
Wednesday through Monday expect at least a light accumulating snowfall is expected Wednesday night into Thursday night for most of the region as strong low pressure
passes east of the area. Eventual impacts will depend on the track of the low which still remain uncertain. There currently is a low to
moderate chance for at least 6 inches of snow accumulation, highest probability across Eastern Long Island and Southeastern Connecticut.

If a private business on Village property costs the Village money, it is not a good fit with Ridgewood. You can’t draw any clearer picture. If, somehow, this statement isn’t true, please quit ignoring all the complaints and prove the contrary. Putting blinders on may help you not see it, but it won’t lessen the money being stolen by them. “Stolen”: the taking of something that does not belong to you and profiting from it. “Stolen” the peace and quiet of a neighborhood–excess vehicles. excess lights, excess noise. The residents moved into a quiet residential neighborhood with little activity on their streets. The prior council decided it was fair to all to take this away and turn a residential area into a business zone. And lose money besides! This isn’t an airport which would have been obvious and one could have chosen not to live there. Businesses were not permitted in residential areas. And not permitted on areas purchased with Green Acres money. That place is at the opposite extreme from peaceful green acres. Can’t the council show how all this is legal and acceptable? How they can’t be forced out? That the town makes actual money even counting all the funds that the village has expended and will continue to spend? Please come out from hiding under your beds and tell us what is really going on! The council is obviously acting under the assumption if they “see no evil, do no evil” all will just disappear quietly into the mists of time. NOT!!
Why can’t the insurance companies wake up and quit reimbursing these idiots? I quite well know that the word idiot is unacceptable and not politically correct. Any adult with a brain who has been told over and over that thieves steal unlocked cars, especially with the keys inside and still hasn’t figured out that leaving your car that way is not a positive action, has to be seriously mentally challenged or looking to get reimbursement for their car and possessions because they don’t want them anymore. No one who can pass a driver’s exam could possibly be so stupid and there really isn’t an excuse for deliberately leaving a car in a stealable condition. So then it logically would seem it is a conscious action on their part.

Ridgewood NJ, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and their partners remind people that even though the holiday season has arrived, it is not too late to get your flu vaccine.
According to new estimates published today, between 291,000 and 646,000 people worldwide die from seasonal influenza-related respiratory illnesses each year, higher than a previous estimate of 250,000 to 500,000 and based on a robust, multinational survey.
“These findings remind us of the seriousness of flu and that flu prevention should really be a global priority,” says Joe Bresee, M.D., associate director for global health in CDC’s Influenza Division and a study co-author.
So far the ten counties in New Jersey have been reporting high levels of flu activity this month: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Ocean, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset and Union.
The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older. Certain people are at greater risk for serious complications from the flu. Those at high risk include:
* Children younger than 5, but especially children younger than 2 years old
* People 65 years of age and older
* Pregnant women and women up to 2 weeks after end of pregnancy
* American Indians and Alaskan Natives
* People who have medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease, and diabetes
Flu vaccination should also be a priority for those persons who live with or care for persons at higher risk for influenza-related complications. This includes healthcare personnel and household contacts of children less than six months of age, since these children are too young to receive the flu vaccine.
For the 2017-2018 season, the CDC is recommending only injectable flu shots be used. The nasal spray flu vaccine (live attenuated influenza vaccine or LAIV) should not be used based on concerns about its effectiveness.
NIVW provides an opportunity for public health and health care professionals, health advocates, communities and families across the country to work together to promote flu vaccination. Consider conducting some of the following activities in your community:
* Distribute flu educational materials at local community events
* Share flu prevention messages through social media outlets
* Work with your local health department, clinics, and hospitals to promote neighborhood clinics
* Expand the flu clinic hours to reduce wait times and to eliminate access barriers
* Encourage educational institutions, businesses, and organizations/community partners to
participate in the New Jersey Influenza Honor Roll,

Ridgewood NJ, The Valley Hospital is proud to announce that it has a received a four-star rating from Hospital Compare, a program run by the federal government designed to provide consumers with information regarding the quality of care provided at hospitals throughout the United States.
In this latest release, as a result of its commitment to quality and patient safety, Valley moved from a three-star to a four-star hospital.
The hospital ratings, which were released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today, range from one to five stars. The most common overall rating is three stars, according to the CMS. Valley was one of only 16 hospitals in New Jersey to achieve a four- or five-star rating.
The star ratings combine performance on more than 50 measures of hospital quality into a single rating of one to five stars (with five stars being the best). Quality measures that factor into the star ratings include those related to safety, readmission, patient experience and mortality. The overall rating shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other hospitals in the U.S.
“We understand that patients today have options when it comes to choosing a healthcare provider and it is our goal to be the hospital of choice for the communities we serve,” said Audrey Meyers, President and CEO of The Valley Hospital and Valley Health System. “This recognition of quality excellence is a wonderful reflection of the standard of care we provide to all our patients and a testament to the priority Valley staff and physicians place on quality and patients safety, while delivering the most compassionate care.”

Ridgewood NJ, earlier this month Gov. Chris Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced commitments to fund 100 percent of their respective share of the new Gateway tunnel. The agreement follows a 2015 framework agreement in which the federal government agreed to fund 50 percent of the project.
The agreement for a combined $5.5 billion states that the State of New York will contribute $1.75 billion with NJ Transit committing $1.9 billion and the Port Authority contributing $1.9 billion.
But the Trump administration through cold water on the idea on Friday . In a letter to New York and New Jersey officials, a top Federal Transit Administration Deputy Administrator Jane Williams signaled that the Trump administration would not recognize the agreement struck under former President Barack Obama that called for the federal government to pay half the cost of the project.
The letter stated that ,“There is no such agreement,” and “We consider it unhelpful to reference a nonexistent ‘agreement’ rather than directly address the responsibility for funding a local project where nine out of 10 passengers are local transit riders,”

Ridgewood Nj, the National Weather Service is warning Motorist that the leading edge of an area of light snow across New Jersey and Northeastern Pennsylvania will overspread the region through 9 am. Untreated and secondary roads will become quickly snow covered and slippery. Visibilities will quickly drop down to 2 to 3 miles.
Motorists are advised to use caution and slow down this morning. 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected today, highest south and east, making for slippery travel conditions.
Windchills as low as 10 to 15 degrees below zero are likely New Year Eve Night into New Year Day morning, and possibly also for Monday
Night into Tuesday morning.

Ridgewood NJ, according to Forbes magazine the No. 1 College 2017 is Harvard University, followed by Stanford and Yale. The highest-ranking public school (nonmilitary) is the University of California, Berkeley; the U.S. Naval Academy is the top military academy. The University of Chicago is the premier institution in the Midwest and Duke University is the best school in the South.
The goal of the Forbes List is to showcase the colleges and universities that deliver the best return on your education investment dollars.Forbes pointed out that College may be the best years of your life but they may also be among the most expensive as costs continue to escalate. According to the College Board, tuition, fees, room and board for the 2016-17 school year was $20,090 annually for public schools for in-state students, a rise of 2.7% over 2015-16. It was $35,370 for out-state students and $45,370 for private schools for 2016-17, both up 3.4%. Americans now owe $1.4 trillion in student loan debt, according to The Federal Reserve. It’s been estimated that student loan borrowers from the Class of 2016 hold just north of $37,000 per student on average.
Forbes also pointed out that STEM or specialized-focus schools fare considerably better this year. The California Institute of Technology makes the top 10 for the first time (No. 6), jumping up 33 spots, and Harvey Mudd College climbs 41 spots (see profile of Harvey Mudd College here). Babson College, which only offers degrees in entrepreneurship, lands at No. 74 (up from No. 104), and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is No. 116 (up from No. 183).
