Trenton NJ, A proposed “Affordable Housing” law aims to establish the required amount of affordable housing for towns to protect against developers bypassing municipal approval processes. The law suggests using a formula outlined in a 2018 court opinion by Judge Mary Jacobson, which initially applied to Princeton and West Windsor. The Department of Community Affairs would calculate the town’s affordable housing number by Dec. 1, 2024, or seven months within the bill’s effective date, avoiding the need for three regional court-appointed special masters, as proposed in the previous session’s draft.

12 Apartments Evacuated After Hawthorne Building Collapse

Hawthorne NJ, early on Sunday morning, a partial collapse of a two-story brick building led to the evacuation of nine individuals and six pets from the Hawthorne Garden Apartments at 100 Rock Road. Fire Chief Joseph Speranza reported no injuries, but 12 units were evacuated due to the incident that occurred just before 10 a.m.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Recovered Over $25 million From Toll Evaders in 2023

Fort Lee NJ, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced it recovered more than $25 million from toll evaders in 2023, up 14 percent from the previous year. In addition to sharing toll evasion information with regional partners, the Port Authority also enhanced toll enforcement efforts with increased targeted patrols, stream lined and improved internal data collection, and leveraged various types of license plate reader systems across a spectrum of roadway infrastructure and police technology to catch evaders. The agency also identified 10 repeat toll evaders including one from Hackensack, Englewood, Teaneck and Lodi against whom the largest default judgments were awarded in 2023.

Teen Charged in Teaneck Crash

Teaneck NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of a Bergen County juvenile on charges of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim, and assault by auto resulting in serious bodily injury. The arrest is the result of a joint investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Teaneck Police Department under the direction of Chief Andrew McGurr.
