Ridgewood NJ, a new kind of car just arrived in Los Angeles with the goal of helping commuters think small. The SOLO, as it’s called, seats only one person.
“Why have three or four empty seats in a vehicle?” asked Paul Rivera, chief executive of the SOLO’s manufacturer, ElectraMeccanica, based in Vancouver, British Columbia. “Think of all the things you do by yourself. You go to the gym, get bagels, get your groceries. There’s so many things you do in a vehicle that is sized for the maximum number of passengers when most of the time you’re not using it.”

Ridgewood NJ, since 1927 Village moms and dads have complained about inadequate parking in Ridgewood’s central business district . In the late 1960’s parking meters were added to the CBD to pay for a future parking garage , the chance was misplaced . Plans were drawn up over and over and finally after much debate in early September of 2019 the Village Council pushed forward with the Hudson Garage . Progress came quickly ,but in March of 2019 COVID19 struck , wiping out the demand for commuter spaces . then restaurants were shut down leaving the Village with a great white parking garage elephant . While things have started to return to some semblance of normal with outdoor dinning ,now partial indoor dinning . Al Gore’s internet continues to steal retail sales ,restaurants are struggling to survive and commuters may never return . At lest the massive high density housing projects will now have access to more parking .

Ridgewood NJ a recent visitor to the Village had this to say about the central business district on Facebook, “Things are tough enough for businesses with a governor who shuts everything down – We have a home in Florida with a governor who knows how to keep business open or at least moves toward reopening. NJ is ridiculous. We go to Village of Ridgewood to support local restaurants. Roads are closed – good to see accommodation yet Ridgewood squeezes $8,000 a weekend out or restaurants to use the street. We see a parking area in poorly marked lots and my wife sees spots open – went too far and turned around to park. Parked wrong way in the lot. I got out and paid the machine. After breakfast we came back to find a $55 parking ticked for parking the wrong way. It turned out to be an expensive breakfast. Well played Ridgewood – parking is messed up with streets closed, so why be so aggressive with enforcement? This is not a time for screwing with people with over zealous enforcement. We can afford the ticket and will pay it. Many people are hurting and can’t. But we will not be back to Ridgewood anytime soon. I feel bad for the business and the mess they’re dealing with but if the Village treats the customers like this, unfortunately the businesses suffer until they force change. This experience and the difference how things are done in Tampa Bay Area of Florida and the state in general shows why people are voting with their feet and leaving NJ and NY.”

At last night’s Council meeting, we introduced the basic ordinance for curbside pick-up, Ord. 3805, along with the ordinance that sets the fee at $100 per week, Ord. 3807. I attach them both here together
with the maps that Chief Luthcke and Sgt. Chuck drew up to show where the reserved spots could potentially be. In rough outline, businesses can join together with residents to underwrite a full day spot(s), pay
for 6 days, but the spot(s) would be reserved for 7 days as Grab & Go 15-minute parking that would be free to customers in cars. An occupant would have to remain in the vehicle, and idling would be limited to no
more than 3 minutes. Kathryn Schmidt and Paul Vagianos called in to stress the need for flexibility, to say that the program must be affordable, and that a half-day program would be more workable. Chief
Luthcke commented that requiring people to stay in the car excludes certain people unnecessarily. Mayor Knudsen said the CBD functions all day; therefore, to accommodate residents at risk for COVID-19, the reserved spots should be all day. Councilman Sedon said he would favor 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., but for now we should get this done. I also stated my support for passing these ordinances and amending them later if necessary, noting that 15-minute meters shouldn’t be moved.
